Best and Worst Broadcasters In Central California

Best and Worst Broadcasters In Central California

Who are the best and worst broadcasters you have ever worked for in Central California (including the coast), not only in terms of management style, and how you were treated but technical facilities too?

If you are on a station break, who would you like to work for again? or would rather clean toilets than do business with them again.

One engineer has a website that documents some of the less than ideal transmitter locations in the central valley, and how much he enjoyed working for his bosses is well documented on the site too.

It will interesting to compare experiences.

Re: Best and Worst Broadcasters In Central California

I really dont think this request is in good taste, esp. at this time of year.
Stop the hate dude, honestly. Life is too short to bash everyone you meet and asking this is quite honestly, childish.
Our goal in radio is to make people feel better, or at least it used to be, for the 10 or 15 minutes most people would listen. Nowadays, sooooo much bashing and hate (and I am even guilty of it). Why not turn it around and ask who has been a positive influence and who deserves an "attaboy" or "attagirl"?
Dont try to defend the fact that you included that in your request as you also asked for the negative just to "out" the bad ones.
Why even bother in these tough times to try to demean our fellow man or woman with this diatribe?

Re: Best and Worst Broadcasters In Central California

Wow. A snowball must be forming in hell because I actually agree with Partyshark on something. :D

Of course, if it bleeds it leads, so sparking the message board up with a little hate chatter isn't exactly something new. And my goal in radio was never to make people feel better about themselves. I'll leave that to Dr. Laura's delightful show. I just want to make money. Big, stinking, boatloads, of money.

If you are about to start sending out resumes looking for work, both students & veterans alike, then it be nice to have an ideal where to focus there efforts. The question was left open ended, I did not give an opinion.

What hate are you talking about?

Who Knows Why The Above Got Posted.
The correct post is below

I really don't think this request is in good taste, esp. at this time of year.

What hate are you talking about? No hate or opinions were expressed; they were fair and reasonable questions

Why not turn it around and ask who has been a positive influence and who deserves an "attaboy" or "attagirl"?
Then why not post who has been a positive influence and who deserves an "attaboy" or "attagirl" instead of wasting time on your diatribe?

Dont try to defend the fact that you included that in your request as you also asked for the negative just to "out" the bad ones.
It was left open ended without comment to educate future radio people, who will be seeking to enter the business of broadcasting in about 45 days after completing their education. You are free to out the good ones

Why even bother in these tough times to try to demean our fellow man or woman with this diatribe?
It is because of these tough times; those seeking work can't afford to waste their time and money, and definitely can't afford to get burned. Any good radio person seeking work knows to ask both questions, when networking with other radio people. Who was demeaned?

You are all free to focus on the positive experiences, again the questions were asked for those about to enter the business of radio needing direction in these tough times.

Don't be so paranoid

Re: Best and Worst Broadcasters In Central California

Best?

KNAX/KFRE when owned by Ralph Guild. Al Grosby possibly the best GM I ever worked for (and there have been several good ones) Strong programming on both stations, great talent and just a boat load of fun.

KBOS/KMAK Don Parker, Jack Armstrong, Barry Richards, Ed Prince, Bruno Lometti, Mark Van Ness, Rik McNeil, Jeff Davis, Dale Mehl, Charlie Scott and Jeff Scott-the oxygen thief and poster boy for retroactive birth control (god I miss Jack Armstrong!) a radio circus every day! Everyone should have a radio gig like this at least once in their career.

105.9 The Edge (KKDJ) Sales didn't get it and management didn't believe but very well programmed and possibly the most fun I ever had on the air! Oh so memorable bus trips!

Worst?

Moronosphere.

All of this of course is ancient history. All but one of the stations are long gone. But I have the best memories of those Fresno years at a time when radio sure as hell beat working for a living. (Ah heck, it still does!)

Mega Dittos. If it was for job security and the money, non of us would have ever worked in radio! Not 40 years anyway!

My main concerned on the negative side is with the kind of broadcaster who would promise someone a job, have them move halfway across the country only to find there is no job. You may have no ideal how often it happens. It's one thing if the person doing the moving is single, but if there are kids involved that's another matter. With the job situation the way it is, someone could be left in a real bad way. We get emails from across the country from talent left high and dry, homeless living in the car. One guy we helped out brought his family to San Luis Obispo from Oklahoma; only to find the broadcaster changed their mind. While San Luis Obispo might be one of the better places to be homeless while living in a van with three kids and a wife. It was unethical to say the least, and as I said happens way to often. I think those who would do such a thing should be called out especially now in these tough times.

Been there, had it done twice.

ROB! How the hell are you? Its been a minute...You know who this is right? Ok, I'll give you a hint....

The old Edge days were amazing and Don was a kick to work for. And remember Julie Logan? LOL...Dave Craig? Brian? Good times my friend. Oh, and I feel you on the Mondosphere deal. We both went thru hell with those moro...I mean, People. Dick O'neal!

I'm back in Fresno, sort of....And yes, it still beats working. Life is good. :-*

Re: Best and Worst Broadcasters In Central California

Hello. It's Jeff Scott. Yes all of those titles the late Jack Armstrong said of me...tis I. To whom the person posted about me as one of the best broadcasters in Fresno, I am deeply humbled. Jack (his real name was John Larsh) sadly passed away about 6 months ago in North Carolina. He was a mentor to me, and I learned a lot from him. It was a radio circus every day working with him, and I was very blessed working for KBOS B-95 in those days. I was always a professional, and used my head before opening the mike. Doing news I ALWAYS thought of the listener, and what the person listening to me would want to know, and what was important. I am now living in Las Vegas Nevada, moving here from Fresno in March of 2007. Radio is bad everywhere now. I very much miss the old days, before the big companies took over and automation now runs everything. Don't bash Mondosphere. They employed me for over 10 years, and were very loyal to me. As soon as Wilks Broadcasting took over, things changed. I was just working as a person in building (PIB) until 4 months later when I was let go. If you wish to keep in touch, my e-mail is [email protected]. I work at the Circus Circus Adventuredome, and my love of the amusement business goes back to my childhood.

And where would this list of good and bad transmitter locations --- be located ??

Re: Best and Worst Broadcasters In Central California

This topic has nothing to do with who has the best transmitter site.

Here is a site from an engineer who has apparently has worked the Central Valley, mainly it appears around Modesto/Stockton, He is clearly not too bashful about what he thinks of his former bosses and the transmitter sites.
www.netfeed.com/~jhill/page.htm

I'm glad to see who the good guys are, allot of you seem to have enjoyed your time in the Central Valley. I know we have found allot of good people in the South Valley.

Eshom point, meadow lakes,Owens mountain and Blue Ridge mt.
Good enough to blast UHF television signals all the way to northern Los Angeles County with clear to watchable pictures; which will all come to and end in February. Only KMPH DT shows up during the summer.

I remember as a kid, picking up KMPH (during mid 70's) in San Mateo, in the early morning hours prior to the KTSF afternoon sign-on.

Re: Best and Worst Broadcasters In Central California

I have heard so many stories on the late KNOX LaRUE who owned and operated KSTN-1420 and 107.3. I heard that he was great back in the 1950's and 1960's but got worst since he got older.

KMPH 26 use to have one of the best pictures in Thousand Oaks when their transmitter was on Blue Ridge, the Antelope Valley also enjoy a near city grade from Blue Ridge. Ch 61 now on Blue Ridge is equal or better than 26. 18 & 24 are clear in some spots of the western AV with 21, 30, 53 & 59 very watchable with only a little noise; and all are better than L.A.

For radio; KFRR-FM 104.1 is strong in west Antelope Valley, 103.7 use to have a better signal than some of the locals.

Re: Best and Worst Broadcasters In Central California

I meant KVPT 18 not KMTF the original call letters.
