Best and Worst Morning Show

I believe I may be like a lot of you in going up and down the dial a bit. I catch three to four morning shows each week for example.

I thought it might be fun to list the Top 3 Best morning shows and 3 worst morning shows in the Greater Cincinnati area from as far south fas Dry Ridge to Hamilton in your opinion on both dials.

Should Jim Scott be in the Top 3 for the best ? Where do you rate Chris and Janeen and so on.
How do you rate the morning show now on WARM 98?

What shows would be listed as the worst and why..

Chris and Janeen have to be the worst. Their continual babble drove me from the station years ago.

Crap sells- and everyone buys...

Even though they are a national show--- I've TRIED MANY TIMES to TRY to listen to Bob and Tom; but the thing that really annoys me about their show is their annoying laughing. It always annoyed me trying to listen to that "HA HA HA HA HA" It always sounds so forced and Unfunny.

They just don't have morning shows like they used to.

I would vote for the mid 1990s version of the Dawn Patrol-- Robin Woods, Eddie Fingers, and Bob the Producer--- probably the best morning show that Cincinnati had for years.

I wish I could hear some of the old Dawn Patrol broadcasts, because I was too young when Robin Wood was on there, and nowadays her voice annoys me and she comes off as a radio Martha Stewart.

In my opinion as well as 2ndsout ,Bob and Tom are obnoxious....a couple of Indiana good 'ol boys wanting the usual stuff good 'ol boys want...guns,booze,women of ill repute, skinflicks, kid porn and ultra right wing racist rhetoric of the tabloidized kind. Obviously they act as if they actually grew up in the heart of hoosierland (or shoud I say more precisely in the Kentucky hollers) where this stuff wreaks like pitbulls in heat...disgusting to put it mildly.

technically Tom is from Cleveland (Shaker Heights, a very well to do area) and Bob is from Long Beach, CA. They teamed up at WJML in Petoskey, MI before landing at WFBQ in '83. Tom has a degree in Journalism from Columbia. Ivy League Columbia. Hardly "good ol boys" by definition. However, they pander to the demos that have made them rich. I call it smart.

Boy, "guns, booze, women of ill repute, skinflicks, kid porn and ultra right wing racist rhetoric of the tabloidized kind". I can't imagine how they manage to work that in every show? Seems to me, it would take an Ivy League education to be able to do that sort of thing.

And how does someone determine what a pitbull in heat smells like? Now that I think about it, a quick sniff would do the trick.

I dare not ask your opinion of Howard Stern.

I started this post and I thank you for your input. I was hoping for some comments on the AM morning shows too, What are your thoughts on Jim Scott and Brian Thomas?

I have to tell you that I appreciate how Scott runs his show from one host segment to another.
I haven't heard much of the Thomas show on WKRC. How do you rate it?

I must comment that the worst morning show by a wide margin is WMOH. Most likely you have not tuned in because there really is no one listening. The main host Chris Theis seems to only talk about what he cares about and doesn't care if his audience has interest in the topic or not. They seem to never take phone calls. I can't understand why they don't take some calls.

The co host Steve Vaughn is weak as a co host. It seems his role is to agree with everything the main host says. I always thought that an AM station has to make sure it's news is the best it can be. Well, I heard him do a top of the hour story one morning this week where he seemed that he have lost his place in his copy at least four times. There is hardly ever local tape. He uses the tape from the Ohio News network for his tape stories. I guess there isn't much news in Butler County for the station to report.

The show is donwright awful. They don't even do the very basics of a morning show such as time checks and the use of solid quarte hour maintenance. I have a good friend in the business and he called me the other day to go on for 20 minutes how truly bad the WMOH Morning show is.

I know the value of AM stations is down but do you think anyone whould be interested in WMOH?
I know WMOH has the worst morning show and their sister station WCNW is the worst sounding station in the market. I have to believe there are some small market radio stations that sound a lot better than WMOH and WCNW. Am I right or wrong?

Besides the interviews that are obviously pre-taped and soundlikethisbecausetherecannotbeonesecondofsilence, it's okay.

I enjoy listening to Jim Scott. He does a nice job transitioning from segment to segment. Occasionally he'll say some lame things, but he seems like a nice guy overall.

After Scott's show, the quality of programming goes down considerably on WLW.

Jim Scott is probably my favorite. Comfortable as an old shoe. He really does a nice job.

Worst? Any of the stupid FM shows.

As far as 55KRC, I used to enjoy Jerry Thomas but Bryan gets on my nerves after a while. It's the same thing day after day, hour after hour. The federal government intrudes too much into our personal freedoms. While I don't necessarily disagree with this, it's not what I want to hear ranted about first thing in the morning literally every day. Can he please mix up the topics a bit and hit some local topics more often? Recently this spring, after a late night and overnight wave of violent thunderstorms with a few tornado touchdowns in the area, I got in the car to drive to work and he's ranting about our nanny government's heavy hand. It sounded inappropriate to be honest. It made me wonder, what's the point in having a live local host on this station? I remember when his dad would have talked about the storms that had impacted all of his listeners and let them share their stories.

I have always been gritting my teeth over Bob and Tom's acinine and sophmoric rank humour whenever somebody has it cranked up at work. Still can't stomach that program.

My all time favorite morning DJs (aside from Jim Scott)
Steve Kirk-WING
Kim Faris-WLQT
Dusty Rhodes-when Real Oldies WSAI was on 1530...miss him on WDJO
Dr. Dave and Wild Bill-WGTZ
Bill Lyons-WDJX "Xenia/Fairborn/Beavercreek"
Kerrigan and Christopher-WTUE
David G. Mc Farland-WONE
John Hall-WIZE
Dale Grimm-WULM (w/ "Polka Monster")
James Francis Patrick O'Neal-WLW

and last but not least.Lou Emm-WHIO-AM THE morning man.

To Limp73. I agree that JFPO was quite a talent on WLW. I also enjoyed the work of Jerry Thomas. I also agree that Jerry would have talked about the storms. It seems his son Brian has a long way to go. But - doesn't some of the bame have to be with the PD?

It seems to me the PD's of today deal less with making the air talent better. I loved being a PD and working with the staff. Who is on control thses days the PD or consultant?

FM best, Chris Carr and Co. on the B. Worst, Chris and Janine on 103.5. Sorry, C&J are great personalities but they need to be separated (on the air, that is). B-105's got it going on. CC and Co. play plenty of songs and their interaction with their audience is awesome. Some comedy, but not too much that it's a turn-off. It's well put together along with Big Dave and Chelsey on the afternoon drive. All-around good radio.

AM best, it's a tie between Ted McAllister on 'DJO and Brian Thomas on 55. If you still like music on AM, which I do, then it's Ted. If you like politics and audience interaction then it's Brian.
Worst, Jim Scott. Sorry, I can't stand listening to him. I know he's a legend, but he just doesn't blend with the rest of the Big One's staff anymore. I like when Steve Hawkins fills in for him, then I can stand listening. Really though, I'm finding it more and more difficult to listen to WLW at all anymore. A totally different topic.

Chris and Janeen on WGRR are awesome, good music, clean humor, just enough info to keep me informed. Still like the Dawn Patrol, don't care if they're all senior citizens now. :D When I'm in the mood for crude humor and the latest Anthony Weiner jokes I'll punch up Bob and Tom and laugh my butt off, truly a guilty pleasure. Like Ted McAllister, great oldies and lots of artist info, too bad the signal sucks. Jim Scott is decent but with 500 people contributing to the show he should be. Point is there is plenty of variety on Cincinnati morning radio, talk, comedy, sports, music, news, etc. If you can't find something you really like I feel sorry for you. Go grab your I-pod and enjoy your collection of Air Supply and Cat Stevens. ;D

Quick comment on WMOH, the Tradio program really used to crack me up. "Got one tire, good condition, asking $15 or best offer" On the way to Shawnee State Park there is a station out in the middle of nowhere that has a similar program. A lady called in once and said "I am looking for a small bird or maybe a small dog, just some sort of little companionship" It was funny and kind of heartbreaking at the same time.

I exclusively listen to sports talk during the work week. The stations have continued to frustrate me time and time again by changing shows literally out of no where. The Zakk and Jack show is not any good at all but I listen because I am not a fan of Mike and Mike. D Patrick show is awesome. I have sometimes heard the 96 Rock morning show, not bad I guess, I liked the old Angry Guys so used to Gamble's stuff.

To Upper90..There are several stations doing some kind of version of TRADIO. I heard it a couple of times on WMOH and the host really had fun doing the show. There are a number of stations around the state doing TRADIO. They are fun to listen to.

I have always had a special interest in catching small market stations. I know from experience ,from my early years in radio, how it is to work in those stations. You get to do a bit of everyting and love doing it. For example, the morning man on a small market station often is either selling the rest of the day or the GM. There are many of times I would love to back to those days.

This post below is hilarious. Especially the part that says the show is "donwright" awful. Hmmmm. Sounds like someone may have an axe to grind. kr

In college at UC I absolutely loved several of the programs on WAIF (late 80's/early 90's). I know it is not a small town station per se, I thought of it when you mentioned small markets. When I went back for an MBA later in life I fell in love with this little bluegrass show that came on every Saturday morning as I tracked down 75 on the way to a day of classes. The hosts were far from professional in the DJ kind of sense but they were utterly enjoyable to listen. I think the lady called herself Moonbeam and the guy I can't remember, heck they may still be on. It really made my drive go by quickly.

To my post about WMOH , I must respond that I have no axe to grind. I have never had a connection with the station. I don't know the staff at all. I am still very much a radio geek who listens to about a dozen stations every night on line. When I travel I search out the small market stations and really have fun listening to them. There are some stations in Kentucky that are quite good.

However, it is still fun to throw in my two cents worth and I have experience past and currently in the businss to back some of my comments. Therefore when I hear a station that sounds bad at times I feel we should point it out as well as when a station does something good.

For example, I never have liked VT but I tip my hats off to the folks at WDJO who do a great job. I thought they were live until a post pointed out they were voice tracking.

I have mentoned before pro comments about a number of stations and negative comments about others.

I know that a station like WMOH has a tough uphill battle to fight in a metro market. As I have said I enjoy catching up on what small market stations are doing. In fact, in the limited games I have heard on WMOH. they do an excellent job doing high school sports. I mentioned before that 1360 and 1530 shoud do some games when the schools hit regional and state play and many of you said you can't do that on these stations.

A lot of things stack up against a small market station but when you can control things such as time and temp and basic quarter hour maintenance it needs to be said they ae missing their mark.
In the limited time I have heard them in the morning their segments seem to be very much off the cuff. If they are prepared segments then I am sorry for my comments.

I realy enjoy l,istening to Joe Mullins stations even though its not my kind of music. They do a lot of things right too.

I think it is great WMOH is streaming. I caught an inning or two of the play off baseball games on line where they did a very nice job. I wish the WMOH type stations the very best.
