Best and worst of 2006

The fire at the WMGM / WOND / WTKU transmitters made for an interesting year in the A.C. Market. Not a good year.

The Worst: Kool98.3, which had the worst book in its 20 year history, and it had nothing to do with the fire, it had to do with major blunders by management. The GM and Director of Programming were both recently let go, with the CEO admitting that she had "made a big mistake" putting them in charge in the first place. Now that Dick Irland is back as GM, let's hope he can right the ship and return the station to its glory days. It was only 5 years ago that Kool billed $1,000,000, and there was talk of switching frequencies with the Shark. The Best: Cat Country, with a great ratings jump. The music is right on, they have great promotions (Quest For 1,000,000 Pennies, Turkey Bowling, Toys For Tots campaign, etc.), and their presence is strong in the community. This year's NJBA convention will be holding seminars on locality, and they could take a page from Cat Country's book. It's a shame that many stations, in this age of satellite radio and iPods, sacrifice the needs of the listener for the bottom line.

the best...thats a tough one cause it seems radio across the board seems to have had a bad year. but with 4 morning show changes a new pd that doesnt fit in know the market or even try to know the market and sales so low you got to wonder how they keep the lights on (trade maybe lol) and a station mng who is blind to everything falling apart around her it would have to be WDHA!
so as for the best
any station that hasent had to go through all of that.

Worst: K 98.5 coming on the air. We have yet another Country format in the market when we already had one coming in loud and clear. Press Communications really missed the boat on this one, but that's inevitable when there are so few station operators in Monmouth/Ocean. How about Active Rock (WRAT is technically an AOR, and doesn't reach the southern part of Ocean very well), Adult Standards, Smooth Jazz or Oldies (WJRZ should report as Classic Hits) instead? Not if all we have in the market are Press, Greater Media, and Millennium, that's for sure.

Best: Not much I could think of, but if I had to pick one, it would be The Breeze topping WOBM in the ratings. This is how an AC format is done, and surprisingly it's actually listenable at times to someone who isn't female! Also a plus: The fact that they don't play Delilah at night like so many other stations with the format. While I think this format is overdone, it's the best take on it out there, and I'm glad to see it performing well.

Worst: 97.5 The Hawk getting turned into jazz

And if you had post 5 in your Ode to the Hawk office pool for this thread, you win. *Rolls eyes in back of head*

BEST : Cat Country's Promotions this year were dead on Great ! ( Super Job !)
WORST: WVLT's Change in Music Direction . ( Super Blunder !)

hands down WDHA went from first to worst - awful.
best - GRock and SUS in sussex county both showed strength. I'm lucky enough to get them both in Somerset county.

There wasnt a lot of good in my opinion in NJ, Well South NJ anyway. They all sound the same they all never take chances and they all are content with where they are.

Best : ESPN 1450 bringing in Mike Gill, it would be a shock if he lasted here much longer, its a big market sounding talk show, that actually gets more then the same regular callers.

Worst : Pick one. The Shark hasnt changed in about 7 yrs and I guess 2006 wasnt the year it was ready to either. 50,000 watts of boring.

Don't expect any changes any time soon. Access.1 pressed the rewind button by bringing back Dick Irland, and they've got a PD that might as well close his eyes and pound his fist on the keyboard to the schedule the music...it'd be just as thought-out.

South Jersy radio is boring. Most stations are doing the same thing. No best, but worst in AC area is KOOL 98.3 with no direction with their format & "The Shark" with their tired format.

Best: Steve O'Brien to mornings on Magic 98.3. Finally, someone who doesn't just read the liner cards.

Worst: NJ101.5 getting rid of Don Tandler's Saturday night 70s show. They replace him with a Frank Thomas all request show, and now he's gone too.

Well, you guys at least have WVLT, a station that actually plays Oldies instead of being one of those stations that plays Classic Hits while billing themselves as "Oldies", and WJSE which is a very good edgy Active/Alternative despite some flaws. These are stations that we in Monmouth/Ocean would kill for but don't have. Instead we have WJRZ (one of those Classic Hits stations), WRAT (safe as milk WMMR clone), and G Rock Radio (Alternative / Hot AC hybrid). G Rock has its moments, but I would gladly swap the first two for WVLT and WJSE for sure.

For the record, that happened in April/May 2005 - and I'm still with the station, just not in a regular time slot at the moment.

BEST: BLOCK PARTY SUNDAY ON THE SHARK WHILE WE'RE BBQing DOWN THE SHORE IN THE SUMMER.
BREAKFAST WITH THE BEATLES ON SUNDAY MORNINGS.

WORST: WELL, IT'S THE HOLIDAYS SO I'LL BE NICE.

Worst: WNNJ-FM in Newton. Talk about a boring classic rock station! Morning show isn't good either. They need to freshen up their playlist and some of the jocks need to have more personality. WNNJ's weekend airstaff sounds great though. Good personalities!

So, in a weird way, WNNJ could be considered the best and worst of 2006, at least for me!

Sorry Frank Thomas, didn't see you on the website, so I thought you had been let go too. Good luck to you.

My comment wasn't meant to be a crack vs. you personally, I just don't like "all-request" shows.

Guess I don't have a worst for 2006 then.
