BEST AND WORST OF 2008....

A

Well folks, the year is almost over...time to get your opinions....
Looking for your thoughts on the :
Best Morning show/host
Best Midday Host
Best Afternoon Drive show/host
Best news coverage
Best sports coverage

worst Morning show/host
Worst Midday Host
Worst Afternoon Drive show/host
worst news coverage
worst sports coverage

And I know you all can't wait for MY opinion, so here it is!!
Best Morning show: Bob and Sherry-WZRT---Best show in a lousy morning show market....too bad it's on the wrong station!!! Mr Marbles, care to step aside and let that show be on the proper station? I give a close second to Judy on CAT....even without Ken, she still makes it fun!!
Best Midday show/host: Turn on XM during this daypart
Best Afternoon Drive show/host: Ed Kelly 945 The Drive-A True Professional-Still putting a great product on the air after all these years!! close second would be Blade on 101.5 the Fox
Best News Coverage: FOX TV-No station in Rutland breaks stories, and lets be honest, there can't be a windstorm EVERY week!!
Best Sports coverage: www.neksports.net Plain and simple!!! WSYB really lost in this area!! NEK Sports has Jack Healy and George Commo, doesn't get any better than that!

Worst Morning show: WSYB Boring in the Morning.....(Also apply the same name to WJJR)----Nothing new, nothing fun, nothing for people to talk about the rest of the day
Worst Midday: INSERT Pamal Rutland stations here!!
Worst News: No stations in Rutland "do" the news, so they all get a pass here
Worst Sports coverage: Again, on WSYB does this in my market, and they would normally take the award for the BEST, but when you lost the top 3 sports announcers in the same year....you get a WORST vote!!

I can't speak for the rest of the region, but things remain pretty bleak in Portland. The local market has devolved into a homogenized morass of blandness and predictability. As a result, its difficult to cite any superlatives.

I think the one bright spot on the dial is still the 'JBQ Morning Show. For my money, they are the only ones who transcend their station's format. In other words, you'd probably tune them in even if you're not a fan of the overall format. Bud Sawyer had that kind of pull at 'POR (even at 'GAN before that) and Mark Persky accomplished the same thing at the Blimp. Longevity may have been a factor in both their cases, but the bulk of the credit has to go to their strong personalities.

Having said that, there are a few folks on-air who do commendable jobs in spite of being ham strung by restrictive formats. I have to admire somebody like Chuck Igo who can still manage to sound enthusiastic while playing the same 200 songs over and over again.
And Dave W. over at the Coyote does a good job, too. Now if he'd just return that rented tux he wears in those awful Rowe Ford ads...

My idea of a real killer morning duo (and one that Citadel could arrange in an instant) would be to team Herb up with his ex-wife Robin. The tension would be palpable and we'd all be waiting for things to erupt into screaming matches fueled by mindless, blind hatred. Man, that would be entertainment, and a definate ratings grabber. Hey, I can dream, can't I?

Red Hot is Gone, THAT IS AWFUL !

Tear in my eye.....they should of did away with one of JJ's non money making AM stations....dont kill the only good thing that has come to Portland since slice pizza!

Well I already know that Maine is one of the worst overall in radio - that's a no brainer. No the best radio market with the best hosts is in Salt Lake City, UT and the state of CO. The New England states especially Maine need to take lessons from them.

Unless things have changed drastically in Salt Lake City since I programmed there in the mid 90s, you're on crack. That was one horrible radio market.

Now go scratch your itchy ass.

Please...elaborate. This should be priceless.
