Best and Worst of 2012

There have been a lot of things going on in South Carolina radio for 2012. 2013 will be interesting.

My best and worst for Charleston:

Best: The country music battle with 92.5, 96.9 and 103.5. All three are very good stations, with lots of local promotion and good personalities. Wonder if one of them will be forced to drop the format this year (definitely not 103.5).

Worst: 1390 AM being flipped to tourist information. There's about 5 other formats that could be better fits, but Apex went the absolute cheapest way possible. They just put in an mp3 or CD every half an hour, and replays the same information.

Your thoughts?

In the Upstate:

Best: The introduction of X98.5, finally giving Greenville a decent rock station. Chuck FM continuing to flourish, showing that the use of translators can be good.

Worst: MY 102.5 continuing to flounder in their attempt to transition from AC to Hot AC --- and, as a result, failing miserably in the ratings. Another big question mark was the need for The Road. A station that sounds almost identical to Rock 101 with a tired playlist, just with a less local focus? Don't see what it aims to accomplish.

^ I have to agree with the above. Chuck FM's performance looks pretty decent to me, I think it'd do really well if it was on a big signal. Since they moved more towards a Classic Hits direction earlier this year, I think they've done a good job locking up the audience for older music in the market. I honestly forget The Road is even there, I guess because that frequency has been so uninteresting for so long.

A worst in the Upstate, for me, is WORD's treatment of Laura Ingraham and giving Russ Cassell his own show.

Columbia:

Best: 99.3 in Columbia. Station keeps sounding better and better. Great selection of music and good community involvement. Would like to see it on a better stick. I know I'm not the only one.

Worst: 92.1 and 94.3. Are these stations cursed forever with owners that have no clue? 92.1 is nothing more than the owner's iPod. No place for that format in Columbia. 94.3 has been tried, tried and tried again. Not to mention the "Good Morning Columbia" experiment that fell flat on a music station. There are format holes in the Columbia market. Neither owner of those sticks has had the guts to take them on. No risk? No reward.

Greenville:

Best: X98.5. Great move by Cox and great music selection. They could freshen up liners/sweepers, but they are definitely headed in the right direction.

Worst: 96.7. CC has no idea what to do with this stick. Nothing works, and it seems pretty useless right now.

Worst:

Greenville--WMUU leaving a large portion of the state and several other states without relaxing music that isn't on the Internet, since in some situations that just won't work, like in most cars. Although I find I enjoy listening longer and more often when I get a computer with headphones.

Florence--Swagga. Not only do we have more hip-hop stations than we need most places, but his one blocks my ability to listen to good music in the Florence area. Though the station signed on in 2011, but it was gospel, which wasn't as bad but was bad enough.

Best:

Florence--A local simulcast partner for oldies WRBK

A bit off-topic, but whatever happened to Scooter? Haven't seen a wall of text from him in a while and, surely, he'd have something to say on a subject like this (even if we may not always understand what he's saying).

LOL. I have been wondering the same thing. His profile says last active December 8th. I do find it hard to believe he would be silent with all of the recent events.
