Best C-CHR the country?

interested to hear opinions on who is the best Christian CHR station?

Qualities I would think of would be:

- ability to "feed the flock" while staying relevant to unbeliving listeners who may tune in
- balance of music: from fresh to favorites, worship to crossovers
- listener interaction and contests
- web presence

Whatcha think?

This is a great thread starter, Ben. Kudos on the topic thought.

I think there is a real conversation going on right now about the state of Christian CHR nationwide. There's actually a real debate as to what exactly constitutes CHR to many these days. HisAir.Net (Shameless plug) has a good discussion this week in the Feedback Room with Mike Couchman (PD of WAYK, Grand Rapids) about the state and focus of CHR today.

Now, as to who is the BEST; That's really hard to gauge and really subjective. You've laid out some great starting points with the criteria you have listed. But I wonder how many of us have actually sat down and monitored stations closely that aren't in our market. How many of us can really give an educated opinion based on personal listening?

The following statement is kind of off the laser focus of the topic. However, I'll say it anyway. I'm finding that many of us (myself included) who laud the industry leaders as "the best" haven't really done the homework required to form our OWN educated opinion of these stations. I'm not saying these stations DON'T deserve their titles. I AM saying that many times we tend to look at who's winning the awards and create our opinions of who's "great" based soley on that.

Recently I asked someone who they thought the best AC in the country was and they gave me a list of 3 statons' call letters. I asked the individual what they liked about these stations and they couldn't give me a concrete opinion. They admitted that they really hadn't actually monitored the stations. They just knew them by reputation. While I would agree that reputations ARE earned and well deserved most of the time, I would like to see more of us (myself included) rely on our own opinions to decide who's great.

Just a quick, but related rabbit trail there. Thanks for indulging me.

The ones I keep bookmarked for streaming are

WAY-FM Denver
WAY-FM West Palm
WPOZ Orlando

I don't know how you could do praise and worship music on a CHR and still call it a CHR. I listen to CHR to AVOID PW clunkers. When one comes on - I'm on another stream or station.

I'll check it out ---

So when are you guys going to put a station on in the Dallas area? Houston?

For the most part it's the same but we have a local morning show. Dallas and/or Houston would be an awesome market to be in. We keep growing...God is doing amazing things around here!!!

One of the best Christian CHR's I would say hands down is Way FM in Grand Rapids.

I would also put Shine.FM in Chicago and WNAZ in Nashville up there also.

Spirit 90.5 in Tampa/St pete also ranks up there though they do lean more AC durning the day and more towards rock at night.

Houston would be a GREAT city for WAY-FM. So much potential...hope you're well Mr. Davis.

Although I have not listened to these recently, my picks are:

KCMS "Spirit 105-3" Seattle
WPOZ Z-88.3 Orlando
KLTY Dallas/Ft. Worth

1. WAY-FM of Michigan
2. WAY-FM (The Network)
3. The House
4. Air1
5. KADI

I'm really surprised KAFC is still on the Christian CHR panel, given that they were positioning themselves as an "80s, 90s, and Today" station last time I listened to them.

I'm still a huge fan of Air1Radio, as well as the station I used to work for, WAY FM in Denver. But I'm very impressed with K-Life out of SLO Town. They have a repeater here in the Ventura, CA area. Although sometimes the talk shows seem to play in very odd times. But I support them.

I like WAY-FM and WNAZ in Nashville and Air 1. I'll admit that I'm probably partial to them because they're the ones I get to hear on a regular or semi-regular basis.

Ah yes! I totally forgot about Radio U! I haven't listened to them online for a while, but my daughter who lives in Columbus listens to them often and loves them.

wow, glad this topic took off! I am just now getting some time to come back and look. There's some really good stations named on here.

to indulge G Thompson - I'm sure some have really monitored lots of stations and maybe some haven't - but it does allow for some of us to find some new ones to monitor and make our own judgements on later! ;D

I agree with Gary, the article from Mike Couchman is excellent ... here's the link to article www.http://christianradiofeedbackroom.blogspot.com/

After reading Mike Couchman's article, I understand now why I have a hard time listening to Christian CHR's. I got tired of listening to Way-fm because I felt like they were targeting soccer moms too much. Even locally owned Christian CHR's, like WDJC Birmingham, AL, target soccer moms way too much (best behaved kid of the week for example). Plus, alot of chrsitain pop is so stale and watered down, like everything is all fine and happy. I know sexual purity is important, but I do not care to get married or have kids. I never liked the idea of living in the suburbs being a soccer dad.

I'm really glad that Dawson McAllister took a risk at bringing a Christian themed show to top 40 radio. Although the music on DM Live Affiliates are crap, at least these people are discussing real problems and real issues. I have called the hopeline before, the staff members are straight and honest.

For some reason, WAY-FM just doesn't feel like real life.
