When I moved to Seattle a few years ago, one benefit was being able to watch CBC-TV from Vancouver on cable. It's one of only a handful of border markets that carries anything from Canada and, like where I was raised near Windsor, it's only the CBC. (no other commercial TV or French or TVO, etc.)
One of the funniest shows I ever saw ran for a short season on CBC a few years ago, during a year when they ran several interesting short-term "experimental" comedies. (Now the network seems determined to be the voice of Alberta young'uns, from what I gather.)
I've been waiting, in vain apparently, for "Hatching Matching and Dispatching" to come out on DVD. I recorded most of the episodes on various VCR and DVDs (I switched to a DVD recorded in the middle of the run), but would still pay for the entire series on a DVD. "I laughed so hard I thought I was gonna die!"
Anyone know if there's been any sign of life after its one little season? I'd really enjoy having the full series to watch again.
That year, CBC also ran a short animation series called "What It's LIke Being Alone," and a one-episode wonder with Samantha Bee (Daily Show) which I recall featured female comics in character situations, but I don't recall the title of that pilot show they aired.
All of these were edgy, sophisticated, adult comedies that gave genuine value to getting the CBC for those who found and liked these shows. I think DaVinci City Hall was running then, too, and feel likewise about its writing, acting, and production.
I can't say I've found anything close to these shows that CBC-TV aired a few years ago in terms of compelling series on the CBC. Seems like they're even bleeping the word "shit" from the airwaves now on stand up comics, which they never used to do. Do you all think it's a futile dance around the Conservative party's fickle funding, or a result of political appointees who have dumbed down the CBC to their level?
