"Best Christmas Music" Tangent

Speaking of Christmas music... makes me think of the first time I heard all Christmas music being played on a Dallas station BEFORE Christmas Eve.

I tip my hat to Glenn Mitchell's Christmas music special, which I first heard in the early 90's on the weekend immediately following Thanksgiving. It provided a soundtrack to the first surge of holiday shopping.

If you know of earlier examples of pre-Christmas Eve all-Christmas formats in this market, bring 'em.

But more importantly, this first Christmas without Glenn, I think this is a good place to pause and offer up a toast to him.

KEOM’s holiday format predates your example by almost a decade. The station first signed on in 1984. They would feature at least a solid week of holiday music leading up to the school district’s winter break. The station’s operating hours were gradually increased, especially after the move to the new communications tower in 1992. Since then, they have always provided two weeks worth of solid holiday music leading up to and including Christmas day.

Former KMEO Memories 96.7 all but stole the idea, starting it right after Thanksgiving.

EDIT: "Best Christmas Music" Tangent

Duly noted! Thanks, Robert!

So I guess KEOM might have been the first to get a solid head start on Christmas Eve. And KERA may have moved the format to November first.

It's a bit ironic that two non-profit stations would pave the way for a commercial cash cow...

Holiday or Christmas Music

Maybe - what I heard on KEOM was "holiday" music and not "Christmas" music. I notice the use of terms "holiday music" and "winter break" from people that are associated with the school districts and scared of the ACLU. As for me - I can't keep up with every CHRISTMAS tradition, let alone all the traditions from other holidays that just happen to be at the same time. So - I just don't even try. I got Jewish friends, Moslem friends, Wiccan friends, atheist friends, even Eckist friends. They sure don't worry about keeping up with dozens of other religions either. Therefore, I celebrate CHRISTMAS, have a CHRISTMAS tree, and take a CHRISTMAS vacation. And I really hope that nobody is so narrow minded as to take offense at that, I can't join everybody's religion and traditions just to please them. So let them wish me a heart felt Happy whatever, and I'll thank them for their sincere good wishes, and wish them a MERRY CHRISTMAS right back - knowing that unless they are some screwball bigot, they will appreciate the wish for love, joy, and peace that it implies.

Re: Holiday or Christmas Music

In spite of the term differences, the music on both KVIL and KEOM is very much the same. A glance of both stations’ play lists at yes.com will reveal that (granted I have found yes.com seems to skip reporting some of the songs).

Merry Christmas

And Merry Christmas to you! It must have taken a lot of work to find those songs from other faiths like that Hannukah song I heard. As usual - you have a very creative niche there, I am sure the other faiths appreciate hearing something of theirs this holiday season.
