I grew up on K-92 and Q-94 when I was younger. Both were awesome until about '03 or so.

My vote now goes to K92 still or Q-101. Both have awesome signals and sound like something out of a top 10 market rather than market 100+.

I still think the best radio billboard goes to K92 as well. On the way to Bedford from Lynchburg about 5 years ago, there was a sign on 460 that said in large, bold letters:

SEX
Now that we have your attention, turn to K92.

That sign didn't last long being in Mr. Falwell's backyard. But it got me to listen ;D

IIRC, Harrisonburg's Q101 of the late nineties & early 2000s was the highest rated CHR in the nation for awhile, hovering around a 20 share. They were hitting on all cylinders.

And back in the mid-eighties, K92 had a couple of years with more than a 30 share!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! At that time, WXLK was nothing short of a major market radio station just smokin' a mid-size market. Great talent, great imaging & great promotion. Nobody else in R-L had a chance! Hall of Fame material...

This is coming from family who grew up in Lynchburg, but K92 was the big cheese for years in Lynchburg because there was nothing else worth listening to on the FM (save country) for younger folks. I was told it was all about WJJS (AM...the original CHUrban in Lynchburg) until 92.3 signed on in 1980. Within a year, it was destroying WROV-AM in the ratings, and it was the only rock music on FM after WSLQ dropped rock in like '82. Everything on FM was country and religious...

Combine that with the things mentioned above, and...yes, they were a force to reckon with until the mid 90's, when WJJS went to FM and the popularity of urban music began.

One station I think deserving of "honorable mention" is WINC-FM in Winchester. They were/are a pretty hard-hitting hot AC and put out an epic signal.

Here's a ditto for 92-5 Wink-FM. About a decade ago they were about the hottest Hot AC in America--what we would have called a CHR a few years before that. Had a great PD who got axed in some sort of sex scandal and the place sort of fell back into their customary half-assed small-market not-so-Hot AC mode that they're still in today. But there for a few years WINC sounded great.

Kinda thought Centennial might have taken 92.5 back up to that level when they bought it last year, but it's still just loafing along. What a waste of an absolute BLOWTORCH!

What about the mid80s when Z-100 popped up in Lynchburg? Did anyone ever listen to them? Granted K-92 blew that station up an took over the signal in the early 90s and has since dropped em. But they must of had SOME listeners, myself included whenever I passed thru. They used the JAM flamethrower jingle package but sounded like small market station should.......small.

My votes goto Q94 (been doin top40 for almost 40 years) and K92

But I think in the late 80s and early 90s, 97star an Z104 Norfolk (M J Kelly, Paul Cubby Bryant, Doc Holiday, D B Cooper) were the best around. After Z104 turned Rhythmic, (might as well call em Urban) I stopped listening to them. I remember WINC as a CHR in the mid 80s. I have an aircheck of them playing Shannon's "Let the music play" in '84, somethin you might hear nowadays on a HotAC station but never ever on one even 10 years ago.

ps who remembers Lazer 93?? (w/ Kid Kelly)

I remember the WINC ( WINK-FM ) sex scandal. The jock in question was Jason Taylor and the PD at the time was Steve Murphy. At the time of this I actually worked in that market and looking back from what I can remember I don't believe either was fired as a result of this scandal, however Murphy did leave WINC soon after to take a job at a local factory but the press at the time ( The Winchester Star and Northern Virginia Daily) did made it clear that his leaving WINC was by his choice and had nothing to do with the Taylor sex scandal. Now for Jason Taylor, Interesting he wasn't fired at WINC either despite the crime ( Taylor having sex with a 13 year old girl ) but rather was given a choice of either to quit WINC or be demoted to part-time board op. Jason quit. Another interesting thing about this was that despite the crime and the bad press of course that came with it, Jason Taylor I believe actually received a number of job offers from other stations around the area ( Winchester's WFQX and Q102 I believe offered him a job ) not too mention elsewhere in the country too.

Still though I wouldn't count WINC-FM out. Once their morning guy Barry Lee leaves I wouldn't be surprised if we would hear a very different 92.5 WINK-FM. Of course Barry is much loved in the area so when that will actually happen is anyones guess but WINC-FM will survive after Barry Lee the same way Winchester's Q102 did when long time jocks like Randy Woodward and his wife Jenny Lynn had left that station. Dittos with Wendy Robbins ( Q102 ) who to this day is regarded as by far the best jock Winchester ever had.

Someone earlier mentioned about WINC-FM being CHR in the 80's..that is half true. Yes they did play the hits or most of them anyway ( according to former WINC-FM PD Jay Young..WINC actually had a list back then of songs they refused to play such as the JoBoxers "Just Got Lucky" and Quiet Riot's "Come On Feel the Noise" for examples ) however at the time WINC would still mix in oldies in some day parts ( 5 current hits and then Paperlace's The Night Chicago Died for example..I remember hearing this on WINC's John Bloom show back in 1984 ).

I believe it was either late 1983/early 1984 when WINC actually stopped airing American Top 40 ( WFQX picked it up ) because at the time their PD ( either Frank Innings or Frank Mitchel/Jay Young ) said the show "didn't fit our format". In its place WINC picked up Mike Harvey's oldies show..Supergold. Ah..no station in their right minds who consider themselves CHR, then or now would do such a thing.

I remember the Lazer in Richmond. It was the first new FM signal in that market . I remember it's 6,000 watt signal could not beat Q94. It then became WCDX as AC in an attempt to take on 107.3. That failed, so they flipped to Urban and out muscled WPLZ out of Peterburg.
