best cities to dx overseas radio stations

I would think that the best places in the US would be right by the coast on Cape Cod and Nantucket, MA. Maine's closer, but you lose some of the trans-Atlantic line of sight there. Parts of Atlantic Canada would be even better: Cape Breton Island, NS; the east coast of New Brunswick, much of Prince Edward Island and eastern Newfoundland come to mind. I know that trans-Atlantic dx is a very common occurence by the time you get to the east coast of Newfoundland, even with normal everyday portable radios.

With regard to "best cities," I'd venture that none are very good. You'd want to be away from a lot of strong radio signals and interference for that kind of dxing.

Ive been to Prince edward island and picked up alot of Europe Long Wave... Didnt check for AM since most those stations arent on U.S frequencys and wont register on digital radios.

The really serious DXers are right on the coast - and I mean "antennas next to the water" close. Signals attenuate as you head even a few dozen yards inland.

There's a "DX-pedition" underway right now, as there is every year at this time, in a place called Cappahayden, Newfoundland, on the coast south of St. John's. A bunch of DXers take over a small motel, run antennas out on the beach, and listen to the world. (Interestingly, they're hearing a lot of trans-Pacific mediumwave signals up there this year, thanks to a quiet stretch in the solar cycle.)

A little closer to home, I know guys in eastern Massachusetts who have favorite DX spots on the coast that they travel to from their homes inland.

Especially right now, you don't have to be right on the coast to hear some of the bigger European and Mideastern signals from the eastern US. The Croatia station on 1134 kHz is a particularly regular catch at night, as is Saudi Arabia on 1521. Algeria on 891 used to be a regular, too, but it's reported to be off the air at the moment.

It doesn't even take an expensive radio - you can get cheap "ultralight" radios from Tecsun and other Chinese manufacturers. It takes a lot of patience, and a good antenna setup helps.

Those guys down there in Newfoundland must be having a blast this year.

I was disappointed during my time in Halifax NS and our little trip to Cape Breton, several years ago. But conditions must be really good this year and can tell you that you don't have to be on the coast to pick up 1134 Croatia :D (now if there was only a way I could null out Buffalo, to get Saudi Arabia on 1521...). My furthest DX, this season, has been Syria on 783 (with my DX-440 and internal antenna) and I'm quite a ways from the coast...

Happy hunting!
