Best Classic Cameo Appearances

Olivia Newton-John making a cameo on "Murphy Brown."

Judy Tenuta giving the WCMH-TV weatherman a rough time on a Channel 4 newscast in Columbus.

Chuck Berry and Johnny Carson switching places on The Tonight Show.

Bobcat Goldthwait popping up trying to lip-sync a song by Madonna on "AL-TV"

Jerry Lewis popping out of a window while Batman (Adam West) and Robin (Burt Ward) are climbing a building with the infamous "batrope."

Dick Clark doing the same on yet another Batman episode.

Daffy Duck dropping in and being interviewed by Pat Paulsen on the short-lived "Pat Paulsen's Half a Comedy Hour" in 1970.

Groucho Marx popping up at the end of an episode of General Elactric Theater which featured a skit by brothers Chico and Harpo: "i'm not saying a word until I talk to my lawyer!" (GE Theater aired on CBS while Groucho was contractually obligated to NBC's "You Bet Your Life.")

Robin Williams as Mork making several apperances in two episodes of "Happy Days"

Johnny Carson's post-retirement appearance on David Letterman's show when he walked out to deliver the Top 10 list and sat down at Letterman's desk and received a thunderous ovation. I believe it was his last on-screen appearance before he passed.

Can't believe I forgot that! Also, I thought it was Little Richard, not Chuck Berry, that sat in Johnny's desk.

SNL has been full of cameos over the years. Two that instantly come to mind is Barbra Striesand dropping in on "Coffee Talk" and Arnold Schwarzenegger chastizing Hans & Franz, calling them little "Girly Men"

A favorite SNL cameo appearance of mine is when the real Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro show up on a episode of "The Joe Pesci Show".

Speaking of Stanislav's first post of this topic, here's a clip of Frawley's "The Lucy Show" appearance:

In Police Squad!'s regrettably short 8 episode run, no show did more cameos. There were the "guest stars" (Lorne Greene, William Conrad, etc) who were shot and killed in the opening credits. And let's not forget Rex Hamilton as Abraham Lincoln

Then there are the scenes with Johnny the Shoe Shine boy who was not your typical street informant, but seemed to know everything about all subjects. Tommy Lasorda stopped by to get advice from Johnny about the Dodgers' pitching problems. Dr. Joyce Brothers asked Johnny for psychological advice. My favorite was Dick Clark stopping by to ask Johnny to explain "ska" music, and to buy more Secret Formula Youth Cream which he slaps all over his face after looking around frantically to make sure nobody is watching.

NEAT!! I'm glad someone stuck that on YouTube -- I don't think I've even seen it since the original broadcast!

And, I might add BTW, another example of how time plays tricks with out TV memories (as we have discussed in previous threads). I recalled the scene differently: in my memory, Frawley was on camera with his back to the audience, only turning around (to be then recognized by the audience) when Lucy spoke to him. It wasn't nearly as dramatic a "reveal" as I thought, with Frawley just shuffling into the scene like that. And, wow, he did look bad -- worse than I remember.

How about "Murphy Brown" making a cameo on Seinfeld?
Also, Dick Clark's guest appearance on Police Squad........ opps, just saw that mentioned above.

On The Dean Martin Show, various celebs would pop up when Dino would open the door to the closet. According to TV Guide, most of the time, Dean Martin was genuinely surprised when he opened the door.

In one particular instance, Jack Webb came out. Dragnet was still in production. When he came out, he told Dean that anything he said could be held against him in a court of law.

Martin replied: "Raquel Welch."

An episode of Hoppity Hooper (if you remember this cartoon show, you're really good!) featured a quick cameo of a giant balloon suddenly turning into Bullwinkle, who for whatever reason says "Likewise, I'm sure!"

Hoppity Hooper was produced by Jay Ward and Ponseby Britt, who created Bullwinkle and George of the Jungle.

Great memory, Rico. FYI: Ponsonby Britt did not exist - that name in the credits is just an inside joke that amused Jay Ward. Bill Scott (writer and voice of Bullwinkle, Mr. Peabody and Dudley Doright, among others) was the actual living and breathing co-producer.

Interestingly...Ponsonby has an imdb page

I believe the story went that the network insisted that there must be an Executive Producer credit. Problem was, technically in Ward's rather haphazard and informal hierarchy, there was no one with that title/position. As both Ward and Scott felt that they already dominated the credits enough, the illustrious and very fictional Ponsonby Britt was born. I figure the mysterious Mr. Britt got his share of mail, messages, and memos from the network, which I like to imagine Ward himself probably replied to with typically warped humor. (I can picture him coming up with excuse after excuse: "I'm sorry, Mr. Britt is currently pearl diving off Thailand," "I'm sorry, Mr. Britt is unavailable until his rehab is finished," "I'm sorry, Mr. Britt is on sabbatical building an ark..." etc.) ;)

Though Jay Ward was an amusing guy, he wasn't personally a joke writer, but he also didn't care about making money - so I can see him paying his scriptwriters to answer letters to Ponsonby Britt.

Other than Scott, his writers included Alan Burns and Chris Hayward - later of Mary Tyler Moore, and other sit-coms and movies. At his daughter's wedding, (probably late 1960s) instead of standing in the reception line to shake hands with the attendees, he placed a life-size overweight mannequin made up to look like himself (he was a bit heavy). The mannequin's hand was sticking out, and a stream of one-liner jokes (in Ward's voice) came out every time an attendee would walk up to it. He had paid his writers to do the work, of course. Unfortunately, I didn't get to attend the wedding, but my father brought the tape home for me to listen to.

(sniff) You mean...(sigh, sniff) that...(sniff, choke) there is no...(sniff, shaky) Ponsonby Britt?....(sniff, sniff, sniff) ...BAWWWWWWW! :'(

aw, Rico - don't cry, sweetie, don't cry - it'll all be better in the morning... :-*:-*:-*:-*:-*

Mentioning cameos on cartoons made me think that in Johnny Bravo (One of the last cartoon series produced by Hanna-Barbera) there are several cameos of other H-B characters, including Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, Scooby Doo and the Mystery, Inc. Gang, and Fred Flintstone.

Speaking of Scooby Doo.....

How about the time the Josie and the ***** Cats gang appeared on Scooby Doo and got involved in solving the mystery....It was classic seeing all the characters interacting and being chased about. The best line of all was Scooby saying 'a pussycat scared me?!?!' when Scooby was scared, unknown at the time, by Sebastin the cat. I would love to see that episode again, it is a riot.
