Best Classic Rocker in WNY?

Ok Western New York here it is. The stations sit right next to each other at 96.5 and 96.9. On the one hand there's WCMF out of Rochester blasting away with one of that towns best signals, legendary calls, very established and well loved morning show and an un-questioned and ..ahem.. un-broken heritage of playing your favorite Rock tunes since the 60's. There's probably a few listeners who can remember when CMF, post WUWU and pre BEAR ( let alone the 97 Rock revival in 88), was the only Classic type outlet Rocking Western New York from "Cuse" to Cleveland.

And then there's the mighty 97 Rock out of Buffalo. Another great morning show with Snortin' and crew. Legendary calls, great talent and a good signal that beats Bears, Stern, Toronto, PHD, Wizards, KB..OK lets stop there...which sounds better.

If you're sitting in Batavia who'd you groove to Van Halen with. I'm saying this out of predjudice somewhat because I think that while WCMF is a pretty good station, 97 Rock, to me, sounds like the best damn Classic Rocker in the country.

Shop around people next time you're on a roadtrip. CMF is pretty good. 97 Rock is like magic. Congrats to you guys. Last time I was in town you sounded just great.

Apples and oranges. The two stations are good examples of what LOCAL radio is all about...speaking to their respective markets and keeping in touch with their local heritage. CMF is better for Rochester, 97 Rock for Buffalo.

The real difference between the two markets is that Rochester has NO station that taps into its pop/top 40 heritage now that WBBF is a memory. Buffalo, with 'KB on the AM band and WHTT on FM, has not one, but two really good ones. Rochester needs a station that'll rekindle the memories of 'BBF and WAXC at their best...

I occasionally tune in 97 Rock in the car. People talk about radio as in insecure business, but it seems like Norton, Russo, and Slick Tom have been there forever.

As classic rock goes, everything 97 rock does makes sense. Big huge imaging that sounds gruff and "tough", the announcers are cut & dry guys (specially Tiberia who fits the FUBAR stereotype of rock dood to a T - his announcer photo once showed him in a demin jacket with a smoke). The music sounds exactly the same as it did 18 years ago. And yeah, they talk about their heritage.

I think the key winning point they have is that they are PROUD to be in Buffalo. In a town that's the butt of jokes, that's got to carry some weight, specially to the older types that likely listen (and likely grew up in B-lo)

Gotta wonder though...how long can this last? I think the days of the big, industrial classic rocker are coming to a close. You can't refresh the music...and even 50 somethings must be sick of hearing The Doors.

Keeping it honest would be a fair way to look at Buffalo FM.

Ya got " Jack " is all over the place..this is healthy and a well balanced diet.

WJYE is pretty with some womp in the signal for when yer downtown...ibid to WTSS and WKSE..but yer not rockers. Damm good stations, but not rockers.

Right next door is 07 Rock with a solid familiar playlist and a well respected air staff..and comes in on the phones in North Buffalo.

WHTT also with familiar locals seems to go back in time on a regular basis and has a wonderful playlist and still manages a nice surprise or two.

Oh "The Lake" Does go deeper than anyone .. Good playlist but ..loosen up ..

Throw in the Canadian content and use scan/search all day long.

Sorry AM..your not for music, but you do it well..

Back to the question, what is the Best??? kinda like the weather..if ya don't like like it..hang loose...it will change.

One station plays Skynyrd, Kansas, and Queen...
The other plays Queen, Kansas, and Skynyrd!

YAWN...

Who the heck can listen to the same 500 (and shrinking) song playlist anymore? Classic Rock radio neutered rock-n-roll.

97 rock is one of the best classic rock station's in the country..i also like the Loop from Chicago, WCSX from Detroit, Q104 from nyc and KLOS from L.A...

the best classic rock stations in Canada are Rock 101 in Vancouver, 92 Citi from winnipeg and chez 106 from ottawa.

The Loop..No. CSX is a pretty good station. Q 104 is pretty good too. KLOS..are you kidding. Major market sound yet it's pretty limp (cept of course with Ladd the Bad at night). Some props to Q 107 up in Toronto should be added here.

97 Rock ranks right up there with KQRS-Minneapolis/St.Paul. Look at the numbers for both stations going back decades. And remember this about these Classic outlets...Very Local, Programming that is local too and these stations both spotlight the music much more than it is given credit. While 97 Rock is the Bills station and is very proud of that, it is, none the less, the Classic Rock station. Next door at CMF it's The Wease/Bills station before the tunes.

KQRS in Minnesota has the number one morning show in town for at least 20 years and yet you can hardly find a mugshot of there host anywhere (guess his name???). Larry is somewhat understated at WGRF too and yet killed Howard with a local, well produced and...FUNNY show. With Infinity down the road in Rochester they've put too much emphasis on Wease/Bills and not enough on the music. Yeah Wease is great and everyone loves him but you kind of get the impression that if Infinity could bank on Wease 24/7, they'd figure out a way to do it.

Listen to the special weekend programming they put on at 97 Rock for instance. It had been years since I'd heard "Bad Attitude" by Honeymoon Suite on the radio for example and yet, when I heard it, I knew that 97 Rock is being programmed locally by someone who knows the market. VERY REFRESHING.... Yes there's the Canadian competition but that isn't an excuse. It's what makes Buff unique and only a local programmer, with great air talent, could acknowledge that.

Be thankful Buffalo. I've knocked 97 for being too conservative somewhat but lately they sound really good.

I like the programming on 97 rock....classic hard rock cafe, breakie with the Beatles, metal meltdown

I forgot about KQRS in msp....they are supposed to be good..KLOS is good, because they have all the DJ's that were there in the 70's...they have a program called "the 7th day"..which has been running for 23 years...

Some of the wrose classic rockers are: Arrow 94 in Washington Dc, MGK in philly, Arrow 93.7 in Houston (well their whole markets stinks)

Q107 is good, because they have psychedellic sunday...but some of their programs are syndicated like The Legends of Classic rock and little steven.

CMF is "the Wease station" because Wease is good and the rest of the time the station is mediocre at best. That's why 97 Rock wins, their quality stays up there all day, not just with Norton. Both stations are "live & local" but having jocks in the studio doesn't automatically give your station that local "feel".

CHEZ 106 Ottawa is a current-based classic rock station...I'd say Q107 from T-Dot is the best Canadian classic rock station.

Rochester's got 3 classic rockers (Buzz, CMF, Fox). The Lake is an awful classic rock station, 'cuz they lean AAA.
Edited by PassDutch on 06/28/05 11:26 PM.
