Best commercial alt. station hands down: FM94.9

Since Indie left the terrestrial airwaves, there is IMO no dispute as to what is the premier commercial alternative rock station in the U.S. for those who love music and not that same Pearl Jam track played for the 1,0000000000000th time:

FM 94.9/San Diego

Evidence: Playing current artists such as Doves, Metric and Phoenix in regular rotation. Playing classic artists such as Jimi Hendrix in regular rotation. Spinning an entire Bob Dylan record at 8pm on a Wednesday night.

Enough said.

It's interesting you bring up FM94/9, because that's the station I was hoping WRXP in NYC would try to emulate. The two stations do already somewhat resemble one another in sound, but 'RXP still insists on playing too much dinosaur rock . If they pared it to the amount that 'BZT plays, I think 'RXP could perform significantly better in the ratings.

I would disagree and put CD101 from Columbus in that spot, with WEQX Manchester VT/Albany NY a close second. Both have huge playlists and play a great number of currents from relatively unknown bands.

I like those a lot as well. I think WBRU and WFNX are great also!

I agree 1000% that FM949 is a GREAT station. The best alternative rock station I've heard that's still around. Love the way they mix in classic rock tracks, sounds seamless. Their overall presentation just has a very cool feel to it.

CD101 is a good station too, often get to listen to it while driving through Columbus. IMO however they fall behind FM949 in the on-air personality department and they might skew a bit too much off the beaten path when it comes to some of their currents, but that's really being nit-picky. Both great stations, light years better than any alt. station here in Cleveland!

HANDS DOWN the best...one of the few getting just about everything right.
in addition to the others cited, I'd add KNRK Portland.

How can you have currents from relatively unknown bands? ??? ???

you should all consider yourselves lucky. here in the Baltimore DC area we have no real alternative. unless of course you have HD or streaming.

other very veryy good alt. stations IMO would include K-Rock (HD) NYC, identifying itself as 'New York's Only Alternative': An undeniably tasteful mix of alt. rock from the 1980s to today, or WBCN HD3 Boston, going as 'Indie 104.1', with a more left-of-center presentation, but equally as good. As time goes on, our options only expand and even though terrestrial alt. stations are going away, to me, the format couldn't have a brighter future :)

ty for the reminders of CD101, eqx and WBRU. just added them to my iphone favorites, for some odd reason they don't show up under the 'alt' category in the wunderradio app.

Don't forget my hometown station in that list, WFNX.

You can add WROX-FM 96X to the Best Alternative Rock Station list. the music set for the station is getting better but the only disadvantage is it is on a very poor signal.

Hmmm, just checked out the playlist for WROX and it seems more active rock to me. Saw Disturbed, Apocalyptica, Metallica, Avenged Sevenfold, Papa Roach, Shinedown etc. among the bands played in the past couple of hours.

In the Market. The "active rock" Station WNOR is mostly Playing Classic Rock. So I would Understand Why WROX would also play these bands. But Most of the Bands that are in WROX's playlist are considered alternative.
