Best Condenser mic for $200 or under???

I would be willing to go 20 to 30 bucks over $200 if it is that much better than anything at 200.

Thanks!!!

I have a Rode NT1A (a little over $200), and I think it sure sounds pretty good for the price. You'll probably get some votes for Audio Technica and Studio Projects.

Go check out Sweetwater.com and sort the condensers by most popular. Not saying that sort makes any mic "better" than another, but it gives you an idea what the more popular selling mics are. You'll see several come up in your price range.

For my money, you can't beat the low-cost mics from Kel Audio ( their banner ad is actually on the Production Forum ).

I have the HM-2D, and I really like it.

I brought it on the road with me this weekend ( I'm in New York ), and it's great! Built like a tank, sounds nice and clean...

And they have a money back return policy! Don't like it? Send it back within a certain amount of time.

Check them out.

Click the link above though, so that if you do buy a mic, Radio-Info will get credit for the sale.

Take care!

Files I've heard using the Rode NT-1A sound great. A couple of alternatives might be the AT2020 at $90, but it'll be a little noiser, or the AKG E535. The CAD M177 and M179 also sound good.

You can check out the AT at http://www.tyford.com. Ty has reviews and sound files of a number of mics. Also check out http://vomictest.blogspot.com.

My personal preference would be the Rode in that price range.

I dig the RODE NT2, now discontinued. I actually like it better than my TLM103.

You can get a NT2 on eBay for $200-250. Sometimes even with a flight case. Retailed for $450 when it was first released back in 97-98.

The Kel's sound pretty good too. Would have to demo on my voice first. At that price is not a big deal to do that.

BAR NONE!!!

BEST deal in the world for an awesome mic (and a tube at that) is the MXL 960! Under 200 bucks at a lot of places..Check this out:

They are un-believable and with a NOS Telefunken or Mullard 12AT7 they absolutely ROCK..clean, punchy, and HUGE!

A/B comparison with Neuman tlm49. The MXL is second on the file:

(just my humble opinion)

Once i'm working again I'll have to get me one.

I have to agree with Jeff. I bought one on his recommendation and was quite happy with it out of the box. After a month or so, the thing started getting noisy, so I changed out the Chinese 12AT7 for a NOS Amperex I had on my shelf. Wow, what a difference. I haven't gone digging for a Telefunken or Mullard, but I'll bet they really do rock!

I got mine from Musician’s Friend for a disposable mic price. It even comes with a nice carrying case that I’ll probably never use, at least not for carrying the mic around.

Call me "Very satisfied in Texas."

I would like to thank everyone who has responded with their great advice. This board by far has the most freindly people around when it comes to sharing and giving advice. I will definitely check out the MXL 690. After talking with my engineer, he offered to order anything i needed through one our distributors at our compnay discount!!! I may be in range for a Blue "Bluebird" mic. Does anyone have any opinions on Blue Mics or at least the Bluebird in particular?

Thanks in advance!!!
