Best country station you ever heard?

Just as the topic thread says.

For me: music-wise 92.5 WESC Greenville, SC. Personalities and promotions-wise: WBCT Grand Rapids, MI and WQDR Raleigh, NC.

I tend to prefer younger leaning country formats with slick, CHR style production. My current favorites are Entercom's "Wolf" stations in Seattle, Portland, and Greensboro. I also like WCYQ Knoxville, KKBQ Houston, KVOO Tulsa, & Q103.1 Louisville.

KYGO Denver, KTST Oklahoma City, WUSN Chicago, and KKWF Seattle.

Small market wise, KEZS in Cape Girardeau is a pretty damn good station as well.

Back in the day, 1170, WWVA, Wheeling, West Virginia (that last part superfluous to most, so I apologize).

Now, IF they would only bring back their iconic Saturday night show and stream it!

If you are referring to Jamboree then it is alive and still struggling at:

Cowbells are still ringing Saturdays starting at 6pm Eastern, 5pm Central. I've heard a lot of really good local and regional talent and the last Saturday this month will star Connie Smith. Not like it once was but neither is the "Opry.

Completely agree with WQDR. Also would add WGH-FM in Hampton Roads, VA and WNKR 106.7 (Classic Country) in Northern Kentucky. In September 2011, I drove from Hampton Roads to Iowa and back during one week. I heard stations from Richmond, Charlottesville, Roanoke (all VA); Beckley, Charleston, Huntington (all WV); Lexington and Louisville (both KY); Indianapolis; Champaign-Urbana, Bloomington, Peoria (all IL); Burlington (IA); and, Cincinnati. In my opinion, none sounded better than those three!

WMZQ in DC usually sounds very good, especially the classic country show on Sunday evening.

WSM for me. Still listen late nights.

WMZQ back in the early 80's was my favorite.

I fully agree with you. WWVA was one of the best. And the Saturday night show was outstanding.

I also am a fan of WSM-AM, whcih I still listen to on the web.

To me the best station that I have heard song wise is 103.1 WIKQ of Johnson City, TN because they play a lot of songs that didn't get as far as the ones that get played over and over on the other country stations. :) :) :)

God bless you always!!! :) :) :)

The best country station I ever heard was WHN in New York. From their start in early 1973 until their demise in 1987, WHN had the greatest personalities and imaging. An incredible station. KLAC in Los Angeles in the 70s and 80s also was a great station.

I think KMGO is pretty good on the variety angle. They play songs because they are good, but because they topped the charts or are sung by someone hot. For example, Burnin' Daylight's "Say Yes" which hardly charted over a decade ago.

Gotta say KNIX - Phoenix when the Owens owned it. It's a mere shadow of its one time greatness as a Cheap Channel cookie cutter station. The ratings prove that too. Their slogan should be... Cheap Channel, give us a classic station and we will tear it to shreds!!!

This is a no-brainer, guys. The best radio station, ever (any format, any market) was undoubtedly Nashville's Big 98/WSIX in the nineties with Gerry House & The House Foundation (including Devon O'Day) in mornings... Hoss Burns in mid-day... and Carl P. Mayfield in PMD. Three of the best air-talents to ever sit behind a microphone + another 3 or 4 on Gerry's crew. Huge numbers.

Case closed.

I'd vote for KSAY 1010 in SF in the early 70's and KRAK 1140 in Sacramento when Walt Shaw was PD and Joey Michaels and Big Jim Hall were the jocks. KEEN 1370 in San Jose gets votes for the 1960's when the air line-up was comprised of: Cottonseed Clark, Phil Philly, Cactus Jack and Red Murrell. A real shit-kicker Webb Pierce lovin' country music station.
