Best country station?

What, in your opinion, is the best country music station in SC? Notables are WESC/GVL, WCOS/Cola, WWNU/Cola, WEZL/Chas, WIWF/Chas, WSSL/GVL, WGTR/MYB (sorry 'bout the abbreviations)...

Vote from me goes to 92.5 WESC. Legendary station and the mix with the older songs and fresh ones is fantastic, IMO. Music is scheduled very well. I think they have a great playlist.
Haven't heard much of the others in a long time... But from what I've read/heard, WWNU is pretty good.

wesc is hard to beat. cc also owns wcos and wezl. all have call letters that people know in those cities. it would be hard for any of those call letters to be anything but country

yeah, WESC, WCOS, and WEZL, even though there are other country stations in the markets (which, probably are great as well) will always be the "big ones" to me. I love WCOS too...but it's in a pretty sad state lately....mid-days are voicetracked apparently, and what's even worse is it's from a station right up the road.

Unfortunately, WCOS is just a shell of its former self thanks to Clear Channel and their infinite wisdom, so I prefer to listen to WWNU as I live here in Columbia and when in the upstate, I do prefer WESC because it is one of the few Clear Channel stations that has not become a shell of itself, and yes, WCOS is tracked not only during the mid=days, but after 7:00 p.m. as well

I find it interesting that at times, people bash the Clear Channel country stations and yet here they are held up as examples here in this thread, based (at least here) on heritage rather than how things are in 2008...so, let's try something.

We have six rated markets in the state: Charleston, Columbia, Greenville/Spartanburg, Myrtle Beach, Florence and Hilton Head....why don't we break down (as best we can) the country stations that exist in each market? Obviously some people have better knowledge of some markets more than others, but it's not a bad exercise. Anyone wanna get the ball rolling?

Yes, will gladly get the ball rolling. Would love to hear about the other markets.

I will represent Greenville as I am not that familiar with the others, but from seeing their playlists, they all seem pretty similar (the Clear Channel stations, WEZL and WCOS). Keep in mind I am not on top of those two, so they may have changed or I may be incorrect in my statements..

WESC is a unique station. As someone stated in that ever-so-long thread Goodtimesgreatoldies started about WESC being repetitive, it was noted that they are not the typical CC "cookie cutter" country station. I rarely listen to WSSL, but from what I see, they play mostly RECENT material with maybe some big 90s songs scattered around...
while WESC plays new country along with a lot of 90s, and even back to a few Patsy Cline, Waylon Jennings, George Jones, Johnny Cash, etc songs thrown in. They (92.5) are not as repetitive, they give the new songs plenty of attention but don't leave out some of the pre-90s hits. There are plenty of new songs, but enough older ones to keep things mixed up. They are doing a great job, IMO. Great sound, too. The jingles could be a little better, but that's probably the only area they need improvement.

WSSL is a lot more repetitive. I guess they can't sporadically throw in some "older songs" (like WCOS, WEZL) because of WESC, so they have to rely on mostly new songs. The majority of the songs heard there, with a few exceptions, can be heard on 92.5, but not in such heavy of a rotation.

I guess it comes down to it being a matter of preference.

In Columbia, WCOS-FM is formatically sound, but I am not sure having Rush in morning drive fits. It just sounds odd and it's obvious he's not a country fan. And who would really expect him to be? WWNU (New 92) is not bad, it's just not different enough from WCOS to make someone want to change. Tyler is a decent jock, but he also sounds very Top 40ish. So you have two country stations with Top 40 jocks in the morning. I actually enjoyed Country Legends (94.3) most of the three, but they up and went Christmas on us. So I assume they will not return (though I have not heard that from anyone).

If Country Legends does not return, I have to believe New 92 is done too. I can't see anyway 92 can beat WCOS head to head. That's why they used a two-headed signal to take on WCOS. I can't imagine Double O has the money to properly market either of these stations. I would not want to be them right now.

I just have trouble listening to Rush in the mornings at WCOS I was tired of Charlie James and think he fits better at WVOC with Gary David, and just wonder if Country Legends is going to be back after Christmas. They way that they are marketing the Christmas makes me really think that we are going to see a format flip right after Christmas day and am not really sure what is going to happen with WWNU as well because if I am not badly mistaken,, it was not supposed to have been country from the start and wonder how well it can compete with WCOS head to head because frankly I find their play list restrictive and extremely boring at times.

I have been reading different comments on this thread with a few different ideas. I for one hope that 94.3 comes back on with their same format. A good while before 94.3 came on the air I had a good conversation with someone on the phone that told me they liked our format on WLRE and was thinking about doing something of a similar nature and when 94.3 came on the air I thought they did a great job. My opion is biased of course and I can't hear them where I live but everytime I head to Columbia thats where I turn my dial to first.

Given the website (I haven't heard them), WWNQ looks like they are calling themselves "The Christmas Station, 94.3." Is this correct? That's just from the logo. If they're doing that (ditching the regular name and trace of the format for something like "Christmas", etc), looking at history I would most definately say they are flipping after Christmas. The site still says Country Legends all over, though. Any country traces on-air?

oh, and for the Greenville people....which country station do you like more, WESC 92.5 or WSSL 100.5?

I think it is very safe to say that there will be a format flip after Christmas. They are calling themselves 94.3 Columbia's Christmas Station.

Had a rather interesting question asked of me by a friend who does graphic and web design in KC. He had been contacted by a station "in the Columbia area" that was looking for some mockup designs for "la raza." Although he was vauge to protect the client, it got me to thinking. Wasn't the most recent GM for WWNQ hispanic, with a background in latino formats? I read he has left, however, it's quite possible the groundwork had been laid before his departure?
Maybe I am way off, and there is a completly different station that is getting ready to sign on. Not for nothing, just found it interesting.

columbia is probably a one country station town and wcos will always win that with people who grew up there. i heard glen garrett is still voice tracking a shift on one of the stations. i think he belongs back on wcos.

Glen is on during the afternoons at WWNU. I think that the mid-day shift was "tracked", but think that he is live in the afternoons.
