note to the NAB..satellite radio..its worth paying for!!</P>

Two from the past that deserve to be mentioned IMHO:

WHN, New York and WCOP, Boston

(Both get "atta boy" credit for bringing country to their cities.)

Simply for the heritage, WSM. I grew up in Chicago in the 60's & 70's and WJJD ranks high on my list. Currently, I'm hooked on US 103-5 in Tampa.

Even though I like WSM some what, I rather another country legend dark horse past and present which is the top one on my list

KWKH-am Shreveport,Louisiana

They had the original Louisiana Hayride that featured stars such as Hank Sr. after they were thrown off the Opry and is where the famous "Elvis has left the building" came from.

Currently they are a classic country station (they were known in the past as "The Radio Ranch", but now is the more generic "Home of the legends") who seems to get into a few more 60s-70s classics than WSM does currently (or at least when I listen to WSM)

I have to put a vote in for WSLR 1350 AM in Akron, Ohio..A great 20 year run (or more) as Akron-Canton's country station with legendary morning man "Jaybird" Drennan.

Definetly WHN 1050 New York City! It was very personality driven and very entertaining. If someone were to follow in WHN's footprints to launch a country outlet in NYC, they'd have a goldmine.

650 WSM and KWKH in Shreveport have standed the test of time. Still two great country radio stations! I still listen to both every night. Patterned our two little stations after them. And brought the Hayride back to life on stage and on air from the Dixie Carter Center in Huntingdon, TN

Best PD in country? Ed Salamon! Any one who managed Jack Wheeler in his prime, is tops on my list.

Thanks,
Chris Lash

There was no managing Jack Wheeler (who I hired as WEEP Pittsburgh morning man in 1973 after he had worked at KDKA). Surviving was the best one could hope for, and I have to admit Jack outlasted me at the station. The audience loved him and it showed in the ratings. He was not the last high maintence air talent I would work with, and to be truthful I enjoy the challenges. Thanks for remembering.

Ed - My answer is definitely WHN. You guys are the reason I
went into the radio biz!
I used to sit in the middle of my yard in the suburban Philly area
to listen (day & night).
I actually keep in touch with Lee & Dan Taylor.
They've given me great advice. BTW, what ever happened to Sheila York?
A huge personal thank you Ed, for giving me something to shoot for!

I'll give a vote to WBAP 820 Fort Worth in their country years. With that powerhouse 50kw signal you could hear them in many, many areas of the Southwest with no other radio service at night. Their daytime signal was impressive as well. They had a staff of great DJs...Dan Harris, Don Day, Jimmy Stewart, of course the all night truckers show with Bill Mack and Harold Taft with the weather. A true full-service station with a good local news department and a local sports department.

My two picks would be K-Bull 93 in Salt Lake City for present best, and KZLA as my favorite in the 1990s.
