Best coverage for OC based FM and AM

Which AM and FM stations with towers based in Orange County provide the best coverage of the county?

Try to find one :)

I am not sure whether KWAV counts since it is on Santiago Peak which is on the Riverside/OC line. But since it it licensed to San Clemente I guess we ought to count it. Probably a clear winner is terms of coverage

And on the AM side, I am not sure whether KFI transmitter is in La Mirada or Buena Park. If it is Buena Park that is Orange COunty (even though not licensed there) and makes it the clear winner.

However if we stick to AM licensed in Orange County, I would have to go with KLAA (830) even thugh nobody is listening with KEZY (1190) a close second. I believe the only other AM licensed to Orange County is KWIZ (1430).

Without looking can anybody list the FMs licensed to Orange County....................I bet you forgot 9.27 in Fountain Valley and the non-Comm in Bueana Park :)

KLAA 830am has it's transmitter site in Corona (Riverside County). Checking the web site it looks as if they finally moved the studios to Anaheim from Sherman Oaks so I guess they are now Orange County "based"

most O.C. stations FM stations are not that powerful. They cover OC and parts of LA county and that's about it. In the Inland Empire, it is very difficult to pick up most OC stations. From experience, 106.3 has the best coverage in So Cal. 94.3 is probably second best. 96.7 tends to get interference from 96.7 in Redlands. 103.1 is good only around the coastal areas. 95.9 has a good signal in eastern Orange County.

That's because all the OC FMs are class A's except 107.9. That means the maximum is 6 kw at 100 meters HAAT, which limits the 70 dbu signal to around 15 miles from the transmitter. Add in the rough terrain of the OC and you have very limited coverage for an A, particulary when you get south of Irvine.

The call letters for 1190 are actually KXMX. KEZY got shipped to 1240 in San Bernardoodoo some years ago. KLAA should really concentrate on being a true "Orange County" station now if they want to be successful. I'm looking forward to visiting the new AM 830 "fishbowl" next month at the BIG A's open house ;D
