There once was a "Pirate" Dance station back in my old hometown "Cleveland,Ohio"
But they were shut down by the FCC.

Does ANYONE remember "GRID RADIO" 96.9 FM
I remembering tracking that signal with a portable fm reciever and frequency counter.
and finding it coming from a Bar in downtown cleveland.
basically, the bar owner was sending out the audio feed from the dance floor system.
he had a rooftop aerial and was supposedly running 50 watts.
it covered most of the city.
that was back in the Mid 90's that was a fun time.
We had 6 local pirate stations. 3 spanish music stations. the Grid mentioned above. then there was my little 3 watt station. and a member of the rap group "Bone thugs and harmony" <-- I think that was there name, was running a rap station on 99.9 fm.
I guess R.Scott Communications out of canada was doing good business that year )

Best one IMO

KACD/KBCD Groove 103-1.

They were more latin oriented and more current based, but mixed in funk/disco and R&B classics nicely.
______________
The old skool show@noon with Jeff G and DJ Rawn
Only on Power 106(KPWR Los Angeles)

Here in Phoenix, we just got a new "Latin dance" station its at 95.1 fm and there calling it "Club 95 Latino Vibe"
our radio market here is very diverse, we have a full fledged dance station
"Energy 92.7 and 101.1" 2 good alternative rockers "The Edge and The Zone"
and a bunch of others, very good radio market here.

Basically, thats where I get most of my influences for my station, plus I listen to british radio on-line.
always trying to keep sounding fresh or at least slightly interesting.

If we're talking strictly dance radio, there's really only one nominee... and they pretty much made the format what it is today: Energy 92-7&5 in Chicago. All the currents you could ask for along with classics everyone loved and jocks that actually knew what "personality radio" means! It was and still is the definitive dance radio station! I AM ENERGY!
______________

Hands down it was Energy 92.7&5 in chicago the best in my book !!!!! it made way for a lot of other commerical dance stations around the country

Re: I AM ENERGY!

There are many small signal dance stations I have never heard. The now defunct 93.1 in Miami wasn't bad... but it wasn't great. Energy 92-7 & 5 in Chicago got it right. Chris Shebel and his team kicked ass on a shoestring. What a shame that their parent company was a financial mess.

Re: Phoenix Radio Market

In my mind, Phoenix has the best radio dial in the United States. There isn't even a close second.

Maybe its partly due to my regional bias, but I am a huge fan of the orignal party station Party 105 on Long Island (signed on Memmorial Weekend 98). Now you may not like the station all that much if you can't stand hip hop, but Party has gotten better in that regard. Not playing the amount of hip hop it was a few months ago & just seems to have just the right mix of hip hop & dance the way they had a few years ago. ABout 65% dance 35% hip hop, r&b & reggage

I'll do it by the decades.

70's - WKTU (Disco 92 - New York). Prior to that, radio was just "radio". When the station came out with different sounding jocks (like Paco) and disco, it was VERY innovative. The original 'KTU helped kill AM music on New York radio.

80's - CKMF (Montreal). When I've heard this station (this was just before Hot 103 down in NYC launched) I was blown away by the sounds of it. Of course I couldn't understand anything the jocks said since it was French but without question, the station and mixes stand out.

90's - CING (Energy 108 - Toronto). THIS was the reason why I fought to GET a dance station in NYC. Excellent playlist, cutting edge mix shows. It's all a true dance fan could ever want.

00's - WXXP/WDRE (Party 105 - Eastern L.I.) They were scaring the crap out of me a few weeks ago with the heavy hip-hop/reggaeton but they have since gone back to becoming dance heavy, often enough beating another station 60 miles west with cutting edge dance.

Energy 108 is the station that really got me into dance music HARD CORE. I think it was around 1995, a friend sent me the link to the stations website, actually it was a girl I used to like. The station had a low quality Real One Player stream, with a high pitched Warble noise, but at the time, I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Our local Chr station 100.7 MIX fm was also heavy on Dance music during this time, and after I subscribed to D.M.A magazine, they mentioned a bunch of other stations that streamed online, thats when I discoverd KTU, as well as HOT 1035 in Toronto, and Power 88.5 in Toronto. There was also a COOL (NET ONLY) station in CHICAGO, called CYBER RADIO 92.7, it also had a DIAL UP Real One player stream, and it was pretty good. But my favorite has to be ENERGY 108,,,, They paved the way for z1035, as well as all the Energy stations across the U.S. I have yet to ever find a station anything like Energy 108 ever. The closest to Energy 108 at the time was probably 100.7 Mix fm in Terre Haute, but still no where near as cutting edge as Energy, but still excellent for being in a Farm Town, without so much as one Dance Club. The closet to it now, is probably z1035, except z plays more Rock than Energy did.

Thank you... that brought a big smile to my face! For those who didn't know, Cyber Radio first originated on WCBR-FM 92.7 Arlington Heights/Chicago in 1997. We were the first Chicago station to broadcast on the Internet. It was a dance/CHR format customized to Chicago. I hosted the countdown every Friday night and also served as Music Director. The nasty mice-infested broadcasting complex for WCBR-FM was where I helped out with marathon airshifts. I had to crash several times on this black pleather couch that was in the building.

Legal problems had Cyber Radio leave WCBR-FM after a while to focus on Internet-only broadcasting. Cyber Radio even had a brief Friday night run on WCKG 105.9 Chicago in 1998 to test out broadcasts taken directly from an Internet stream onto the airwaves.

Cyber Radio became CyberRadio2000.com, hosting dozens of channels of various music. It eventually closed down, a casualty of the bitter licensing fee battles that raged in Congress a few years ago.

Of course, WCBR-FM 92.7 was bought by Big City Radio in 1998 and became KISS-FM (and later, ENERGY 92.7/5). It was a weird twist of fate when I was hired at the start of ENERGY 92.7/5 because I had worked on the 92.7 frequency during the Cyber Radio days. I had also worked as PD at the original ENERGY in Chicago, ENERGY 88.7 WLUW-FM.

It was hilarious to know that after doing a few long shifts at ENERGY 92.7/5's spacious downtown studios, the exact same black pleather couch from my WCBR-FM days waited for me in the hallway to crash on!

Peace Love + Dance Beats!
