Best Daytime AM DX

Speaking of W. FLA, I picked up a number of 10KW X Band AM Stations well below local sunset(from Englewood FL) incl. Ft. Smith AK, Dallas TX (or its environs) and the Radio Disney AM (ugh) from near Norfolk VA. There were not the usual daily catches; they were the good uns. WWL still is quite strong at the shore and a few miles inland here (about 80MI S of Tampa) as well. I even picked up Beaumont TX on 560 AM from near Ocala FL well after local sunrise.
It's a fun band to play with in the fall/early winter.

Florida's a pretty rare state in the midwest. You just about have to have somebody's pattern being off except for the x-banders. I remmeber hearing the Orlando-area station that was all travelers info, all the time. Suprisingly enough the most consistent Florida catch in Ohio was the former WLCY-1380 out of Tampa. It was in and out under others, but you could hear it.

When I was in Sarasota attending the six week wonder school for a First Class License (you're an old timer if you remember those) WWL blasted in every day. I also DXed a couple of New Orleans FMs.

Years ago we used to vacation in the St. Pete area, I still remember WLCY as one of the best Top-40 stations at the time and recall they carried ABC Contemporary News (the things we remember)...

At my location on the East Coast near Daytona Beach, I can routinely receive a number of stations all the way up the east coast down to the Bahamas and other Caribbean areas...

I still have to say one of my fondest daytime dx's was WAPE/690 in Jacksonville. Our family always vacationed in the Morehead City, NC area in the 60s. WAPE was always on there everywhere during the day---coming in almost like a local, even on my little handheld "6 transistor" radio. What is that, about 600 miles? One time, a tropical storm came up while we were down there, and The Big Ape stayed on at night with their 50K and we got to hear what they sounded like at night.

I remember 690 (not with the WAPE calls but as oldies WPDQ) being on day power at night as Hurricane Hugo slammed into Charleston SC. It was a rare oportunity to hear this station, whatever the incarnation.

I thought it was cool driving down I-95 and hearing ZNS-3, Bahamas in broad daylight. Not that it shouldn't have been blasting in, but still, for an Ohio boy that was cool.

My record for daytime DX would have to be KGDD and KEX during late morning and KGA for afternoons (300 MI! :))

2-3 times a year I do the five hour drive from Toronto to Montreal. 1560 from New York is a daytime regular most of the time during winter months for the entire 300 mile journey.

Living in Ottawa, I can confirm that. It's also the first station to come in by skywave in the afterno0n in the summer. I'm guessing during summer, we may lose it for a total of about 3 hours in the day. WBBM is a regular in the daytime in Ontario during December and January. I may have already mentioned that earlier in the thread.

Mimo....My turn to confirm your post. When crusin' along the 401 and being a Chicago area native, I'll try 780 in the daytime to catch up on local news, sports, etc. and as often as not, 'BBM will be right there....especially in the winter. Definitely the best Chicago signal day or night...especially since all the development went in around the WLS stick.

BTW, generally the only semi-regular Ottawa catch around the Chicago area is CIWW. Occasional at best, riding over WIBA and the rest of the mess on 1310. CFRA is very very rare but not totally impossible (580 used to "default" to CKY at night). 1150 seems to be in the mix once in a while (usually under WYNE and/or CKOC). Never have heard 1200.

I once heard Detroit's 760 AM around early afternoon in northern VA with my GE Superadio III though the reception was very weak. This was only with the internal ferrite bar antenna.

Daytime DX Update 10/25/2008

You know sometimes I pick up 1520 and 1640 from Portland at 175 miles. Well, I've found greater distances, KONA 610 was picked up weakly at 190 miles on a cloudy day, but the slam dunk winner was 700 KXLX Airway Heights, WA at a distance of 300 miles on a cloudy day! That's amazing! By the way, I picked both stations up around early afternoon.

About a dozen years ago, I heard WBZ-1030 in Boston on my car radio at noon on a cold, cloudy day here in Lexington, KY. I was waiting for my kids to come out of a skating class and was tuning around the dial and there it was...very clear for about 20 minutes.

I was in Richmond, KY about twenty years ago and WBZ appeared in the middle of the day. They were still playing music and IIRC they were playing Please Come To Boston.

The daytime catch I could never verify, since I don't speak the language was Spanish Language station on 560 earlier this decade. My QTH was Owensboro, KY and my guess was WIND Chicago.

I received a lot of stations one late Oct. afternoon starting about 3 hours before sunset one afternoon near Rockingham NC. Atlanta was clear as a bell (750) and shortly after that the Chi-Cle Cinci Det- NYC- etc came in. Boston weighed in about 4 pm; way before local sunset which was about 6:15 PM if I recollect.

WBZ is a real powerhouse, day and night. I've picked it up during the day as far south as Suffolk County, NY and on beachfront property on the northern Jersey shore. Too bad its daytime audio sounds so flat now - thanks to the implementation of IBOC. At night, it shines in places where other northeastern stations are very weak - like parts of the midwest and south. WBZ's nighttime signal is truly impressive, I have even caught it in Utah - clearly audible under KTWO.

WTIC comes in reasonably well, during midday, as far south as southern NJ - as long as you're right near the coast. Go inland and its gone. Nonetheless, that's pretty darn good reception and its strong enough that the same may well be true along the east coast of the Delmarva peninsula too. Just never been there to try it.

Saltwater really allows for impressive daytime DX.

I once picked up WBZ clear as a bell around 415pm in Late Novemebr on a Walkman while riding a greyhound bus somewhere in Central North Carolina.

WTIR 1680?

They often didnt power down... and to this day, still don't... they're now WOKB 1680, running gospel...... the spanish moved to 1600, WLAA (which is 5KW and doesnt always power down).... WTIR was on 1300, but the calls and format no logner exsist right now

I know someone who worked overnights at WLCY for awhile..(and was there when they did their live remote from the roof of a McDonalds for a week or two straight!)..he left radio, owned some restaurants in Central Florida but is back in radio, as a promotions/sales/production guy
