So....You other old timers....out there...I'm just curious...why did Steve Kirk leave WSAI for WING? Some might have politely called that a "lateral move", but I imagine he had a good reason, at the time. When and why did 980-WONE abandon Top 40 for Country, and who rmembers why "Skinny Bobby" left WSAI???

If I remember correctly, Kirk had a dispute with SAI management in June of 66, and consequently left the station, to be replaced by Jim O' Brien from Dallas. I seem to remember that Skinny Bobby Harper was fired from SAI his first tour at the station, and was eventually replaced by Tom Kennington. Harper returned to SAI in 1969, and was program director for a short time, before leaving for Atlanta

I seem to recall that 980 WONE switched from Top 40 to MOR and then to country. I really thought they were MOR through most of the late '60s and then went country. Does this ring a bell with any other "old timers" out there?

Not sure why they dropped Top 40 unless WING was cleaning their clock. It seems though that they put the Top 40 format on their FM when they dumped it on AM. 104.7 WONE-FM was pretty decent. All automated. No live jocks until Bill Struck came along. Top 40 in full glorious FM mono.

Now you have my memory rockin' and rollin'... COULD I have been hearing the final days of WONE-FM in the fall of '70? I DO remember them having live (sounding) DJs then - specifically afternoon and evening - but I'm wondering if the "ONE Turns TUE" shtick took place in (maybe) spring of '71? At that time I was much more inclined to listen on FM to WNAP, so I'm not a really good 104.7 historian.

WONE-FM added one jock, Bill Struck, who did a live program once a day and then either taped others or they replayed some of the live programs. I remember often hearing the same songs in the same order with the same comments from Bill. Eventually they dumped this bad idea in favor of adding two more live jocks....one of whom was Dave Michaels from our beloved WOXR. Can't remember who the other guy was. Anyway, it was at about this same time they switched it from WONE-FM to WTUE.

In 1972, they started using a new jingle package....I think they were what's known as the PAMS Solid Rock jingles....same ones WLS and a bunch of other stations used at the time. People on these boards seem to like them. I thought they were dreadful sounding.

You jogged my memory... Bill Struck was afternoons in the fall of '70... And it WAS WONE-FM at that time. I found an old cassette tape from that era... 'Guess 'TUE came around the following spring. Anyway--those were great years in FM radio! I will never forget the "excitement" on FM as the medium ventured into Top-40 and other stations (like WEBN) presented "progressive" formats... A really GREAT ERA! 'Sorry the younger folks couldn't hear it "up close 'n personal".

I think the "other guy" mentioned here was Sean McKay....if memory serves me correct WTUE's line up in 1972 was:
Greg Mason 6-10AM
Sean Mckay 10-3PM
Bill Struck 3 - 7PM
Dave Michaels 7-12 Mid
Bwana Johnny 12 -6AM
with Dale Bell and Jason "Baby" Roberts and a cast of others on weekends.
They normally did a "record recall bonus" at about :40 past each hour in which they played a portion of song and invited listeners to guess the song. The winning called who correctly indentified the song received a "super hit kit" providing they had not won in the past 30 days.

I didn't get my first reel>reel until Christmas of '72, so I have no tape to reference.

Anybody here with a better memory wish to clear this up for me?

Good memory. I think you nailed the lineup. The only one that doesn't ring a bell is Sean McKay. And I'd forgotten about Dale Bell. I remember with his accent it used to sound like he was saying Dale Bale.

also, there was a time when the night shift was Billy Daniels, and Pete Boston... the day lineup was the same

AL (conners) Morgan (same guy from wing) was there for a time, It was when Bill Struck left for Denver, Greg Mason became PD, Morgan did Middays, and Sean did afternoons for a while...

whatever happened to Sean anyway?, and I remember the record recall at the :22 BREAK

Perhaps it was the ":22" break. The intro (read by their image voice) said:
"And now it's time for another record recall bonus"

after the winner correctly indentified the song the jock would then say "congratulations to (contest winner) who just won a W2 Super Hit Kit and a Top 10 plus 40 tune index available at your favorite record outlet."

Hard tellin' what was in that "Super Hit Kit". I think it might have been a current hit single (45) and a few odds and ends.

As for Sean McKay...not sure what became of him....never heard him on any other stations.

Does the name Bill Lyons sound familiar? I think he may have worked there too.

I worked with Dale Bell back in the 80's. Nice guy and you are right about the way he pronounced his name. I always got a chuckle out of that.

yep...remember Bill Lyon's, although I don't remember that much. He was a jock on the country station, and useds that name when he was on TUE... If memory serves, he was Buster somebody on WONE.

Super Prize kit...station prizes du jour...whatever certificates, and prizes were in house...sometimes the list was long, but mostly three or four certicificates

yea, i always loved record recall...sorry it's not really done anymore....i think it was a paid contest...but don't quote me on that....loved the PAMS opening Jingle..

"WTUE RECORD RECALL...

then the staging...where the "be the ninth caller at ??????? and intentify the year this song became a hit and win a wtue super prize kit

still love that contest

WOW! As the former Jason "BABY" Roberts, it is humbling to be remembered.

Greg Mason - went on to be Terry Dorsey on WING and in Dallas.
Sean McKay - Allan Dane at WIZE in Springfield.. didn't he end up in Dallas with Dorsey
Bill Struck PD - always with a cigar in his mouth. He went to Denver sometime in the 80's.. I think KLZ AM.
Dave Michaels - probably the greatest nite time jock I ever worked with. Still living in Cincy (according to 440 Satisfaction) and not on the air.
Bwanna Johnny - not the one from WUBE in Cincinnati (he's out in Seattle I think working for Jones Media as a consultant) - Bwanna was a very large man.. died some time ago I believe.

Jason "BABY" Roberts - I was working at WIZE in Springfield. I remember Bill Struck calling me to tell me I had the gig. They already bought the jingle, so whoever they hired was going to be Jason Roberts. I added the "BABY" just to be cute. Lasted about 10 months. At the time, Bwanna and I shared the all night gig. So I was full time doing 5 shifts, 6 hours each. Wed Thur Fri 12mid - 6am.. (which is Thurs Fri and Sat morning) then back 6 hours later for Noon-6pm Sat and Sun. But I was off for almost 3 1/2 days every week.
Station decided to cut back and go to six day weeks. Rumor was they flipped a coin between Bwanna and I.. he lost, found out about it and begged to keep his job. So I was out. Horrible firing, instead of being honest, the GM (Struck wasn't in the room, difficult to forgive) rambled on about how bad a jock I was.

Record Recall was the name that tune game. BONUS Record Recall meant you won money (10.47 I think).

"12 O Clock on the Rock of Dayton where we've given away over 2 thousand dollars in Bonus Record Recall you could win NEXT!!!!!!"

Almost went to work at WING.. got beaten out for the job by Carl what's his name from Channel 2.

Worked in Dayton two more times, 104 WDJX and later when it was the Oldies station (Yes, I was the one who replaced Steve Kirk.)

Can anyone fill in the blanks in the WTUE lineup Summer of 1975 (immediately before and after the flip to AOR)?

I remember Al Morgan mornings (shifted to afternoons 4-8pm after the flip), I think a guy named Greg who was the PD 10 to noon, and of course, Dave Michaels at night 8pm-12 midnight. I remember they brought in a jock for 8p-12m from WCOL in Columbus after the flip as Dave Michaels took over as PD and went 10-12noon.

Greg might have been Greg Mason(later Terry Dorsey in a previous post) who did mornings there.
Don't remember the dude from 'COL. I do remember a 'COL personality in the evenings in 1973 who just simply called himself "Allen (or Alan) at Night." Don't know if that was him on WTUE or not. The PAMS "Solid Rock' Jingles were awesome...same package WLS used that same year. I remember Bill Lyons on the air at WTUE as well....he later did mornings at WDJX in late 1980 and 1981 who replaced a "Dave" Lyons who previously was DJX's morning man. Bill Lyons was also "Rob N. Hood on WNDE,Indianapolis ("Windy 1260") in 1975/76..he was a hoot! Always giving the newsman Julian Mouton a rough time on the air at the end of the newscasts when he always replied to Lyons in his quasi-Byron MacGregor voice: "YOUUOOOOO....DEDCADENT!!!!! "

Dave Michaels stayed there during the switch to AOR as PD before Chuck Browning took over a few years later.

Wasn't Jason Roberts later Mark Elliott at WDJX???

Lyons went on to become a doctor and missonary in Africa. He was (and I'm sure still is) a great jock.

Yes, Jason Roberts is Mark Elliott.. still. I used Jason for a short time on another station in the same cluster I was voicetracking.

That would be the same Mark Elliott... now doing mornings in the most beautiful part of the world, Northern Michigan. Will post link to website when it's ready.

I suspect that would be the same Mark Elliott from Q102 too? The GM from 1/2 was wrong about Mark E (Jason R). He did (and I suspect does) a great job on the air.

You are welcome. I hadn't put 2 and 2 together that JBR and ME are indeed one. You remind me somewhat of the guy who does Solid Gold Saturday Night (or whatever they call it now)...Dick Bartley (he's excellent)....very clear, easy to understand, good voice, phrasing, and a superb ability to express himself with the right words and of course runs a tight board. Lee Gillette from WLW was another one of those great voices.

On another note....You had the opportunity to play some fun music at the Q. Sad that the jocks today (those that have survived in a business of survival) have no music to play if they are looking at new stuff. It's just one man's opinion but music today is for the most part...bad.

Thanks. I have to admit, in three years of reading these boards... that's the first compliment I've ever received.

I have every WING top forty list from 1960 through 63. I still like looking over them, remembering the DJ's and the sound of some great personalities. WING played rock long before WSAI did in Cinci, and WING was the station we listened to east of Cincinnati until WSAI came on board. Then we had three to listen to, including WCPO, (later known as WUBE or 123WB)
