Best DJS in East Tennessee past and present

Old, old school- Red Kirk and Curly White. Definitive radio personalities in the Tri-Cities during their era, which unfortunately for me was before my time.

Also included in this list would be the late, great Bill Cramer, who made WQUT with "The Cramer Outrage" and then was shown the door for his efforts and lived the rest of his life working overnight shifts and at dying AMs.

I knew Bill and while he was eccentric, he also was a great gentleman and music enthusiast.

And since when was eccentric a bad thing for radio?

Cramer did more for this market than the market did for him. Sadly, that's about par for the course for the Tri-Cities.

OTHER GOOD DJs (of a more contemporary nature)-

Love Reggie Neel. Smooth as they come.

Love Marty Osborn. Knowledgable as they come.

I'd say I love Jeri George, but people would get the wrong idea. But I respect her talents as much as anyone's.

AND FROM THE TOPIC OF WHERE DID HE GO?

My idol, Casey Williams, of WEMB (yes, WEMB!) and the Coffee Club, the morning show in the mid-90s.

I worked with him in Erwin and found him to be creative without being overbearing.

I also found him to be a workaholic who would do six morning shows a week, then usually something in the afternoon, and then the 12 a.m.-7 a.m. board op shift on Sunday morning on WXIS. They told him the 23 hours between shifts from 7 a.m. on Sunday to 6 a.m. on Monday were his "day off."

Great voice, great sense of humor, and, like everyone else in Erwin, was patronized by management and paid in sea shells and box tops.

I was in the Air Force in the early 1970’s in so I was only an occasional listerned when I visited my parents who moved to Chattanooga but I remember a “Chickamauga Charlie” on WDXB? and an E Alvin Davis on WFLI, who I later heard on either WTIX or WNOE in New Orleans.

E Alvin... It didn't matter the format. It could probably be all religious or space funk. But he had 'em all playing Amie by Pure Prairie League.

Slightly off-topic, but somebody mentioned a news guy earlier:

Ron Ashburn, news
Lindsey Nelson
George Mooney
and Mike Keith, sports

And, of course, John Ward

\and now... back to the DJ's

I was a Big Fan of Silent Sam on WNOX...He Did Overnights On Weekends...In 1965 & 66...And How Could We Forget Grovie George McGorvern WNOX...And The best Of All Rob Galbreth And Honest John Turn Em On And Let Him In He's Ur Friend Honest John Honest John

Funny that the Midnight Rambler was mentioned. I live in Panama City, FL. About 5 or 6 years ago I had the Rambler do a show for us on WRBA 95.9. It was just a recorded show from one of his "come back" sessions and we played it in a Sat night. Brought back a lot of memories growing up in East TN. I was working for Terry Bond when his group purchased our cluster in Panama City and The Rambler came up in discussion. I was given his number and gave him a call. He just brought the character back so we did a show down here in Fla. Not sure the audience "got it" but I enjoyed the heck out of it!

Back to the topic, Commander Dave was always my favorite.

Let us also not forget Your Dave Young. Loved Adele Arkawa a lot. CP & Walker were superb. On WUOT-FM, Daniel Berry is superb as was Norris Dreyer. Both had and still have superb voices on air. Glenn Morton at WGAP was always nice.

I'm pretty sure that both Your Dave Young and Adele Arkawa were mentioned in some earlier post.

In Chattanooga, I would nominate Luther at WDEF, Chickamauga Charlie at WDXB, Cleveland Wheeler, and the many fine WFLI 1070 airstaff.

Is Randy Miller still in Kansas City? He was always awesome. Caught him in Cincinnati once. Heard a fake spot bit for the "Nassole Family Restaurants". "We're a family restaurant... A Nassole will take your order. A Nassole will cook your food. Our menu is so distinctive, you'll say 'Man, my lunch tastes like A Nassole'." Absolute genius.

Fulton H.S. radio alumni. Probably one of the best of the bunch. No offense to the rest of the great crop from that school.

I agree with Pratte...Norman "Curley" White from WBEJ....Red Kirk...and another WBEJ'er....Mack Morris...Mack was a newsman. Bill Harris from WIDD,also. Used to love listening to Shotgun Stevens....100.3. He still around?

I worked at WGOC...did PM Drive there in 1983...left there and went to work for Steve Howard at WKPT/WTFM. That was back when KPT was AC and WTFM was doing "beautiful music". When I was there, Steve Blevins was doing mornings and Chris Goins was PD/middays. I knew Ray Buckles...great guy. He was working at WXBQ when I was there before I went to WGOC....I guess back then I took the "town to town up and down the dial" literally.

Sadly, Ray Buckles died a couple of years back. Real nice guy. He had a back car wreck on 11-W right outside of Bristol coming to WXBQ, but that was 1983. Later on, he had some health issues I heard.

Last I heard, Steve Blevins was doing something for NASCAR and was either living in Daytona or Charlotte. I haven't talked to him in 20 years or longer. Chris Goins is an assistant Pastor for a church in the Tri-Cities called the Celebration Church. Tennessee Stud may know about some of the others. I know that Red Kirk also died a few years back.
