Best FM signals in CT

I've seen this on other boards....and it brings up some decent, intelligent discussion, so why not here? In your opinion, what are the best FM signals in Connecticut?

I think KC101 takes the cake overall... open channel and I don't think there's anywhere you can go in Connecticut in a car and not be able to hear them.

For class A's - it's a tough call. Thoughts?

I live in northern Ct, so...
WRCH 100.5
WCCC 106.9
WAQY 102.1 Springfield
WHYN 93.1 Springfield
WTIC FM 96.5

97.1 comes in very well here in Windsor Locks, but I'm not sure how much of a reach it has signal wise.

As far as Connecticut-based FM signals go, I have to agree with Adam about WKCI, but Connecticut has no shortage of big signals. WWYZ had been the strongest off West Peak in Meriden - not sure if that's changed.

is there any research that has been done for this?
you really have to split this into 5 categories

per Population in reguards to listening inside buildings etc
WCTZ - WKCI -WPLR WRKI 1 Norwalk & 2 Bridgeport (Boosters currently off)

per powerful signal by FCC regulations in CT
WEBE

per listener feedback. For example stations that come in going way the hell out of their COL range
WRKI, (albany) WCCC - albany and southern VT.
WXCI (ok figure I'd throw my radio station in lol)

Out Of state stations covering most of CT
WAQY WAAF west of worcester MA (paxton currently off)

Stations making it to SW CT Stamford Greenwich from Meriden Peak area
WPLR WKCI

I've always thought WZMX 93.7 was also pretty strong.

This one's just over the border, but I've been able to pick up WAQY 102.1 clearly all the way up I-91 from New Haven to about Mt. Ascutney, VT.

you used to pick WAQY up to that area clearly but 101.9 WKKN is now on... so you loose it near exit 4 in Putney and get it back in Springfield VT at exit 7 for a bit. I miss when there was rock 101.7 up that way. those were the days of active rock not only did I loose WAQY but I lost WAAF as well when they moved closer to Boston. as your on the subject, 105.1 WTOS from central Maine as well as many far away radio stations makes presence bouncing off Mt.Ascutney.

For a Connecticut-based FM signal, I'd go with WEBE-FM 107.9 of Westport. Damn good 50,000 watt signal coming off that Bridgeport smokestack! :)

WEEI-FM 103.7 out of Westerly, RI does a heck of a job covering all of eastern CT making it into the Connecticut River Valley. I always thought WCCC-FM 106.9 had one of the best signals around. Way back during their "all request radio" days of the early 70's, they would get calls all the time from Brattleboro, VT.

96.5 WTIC-FM has a very strong signal, I remember listening to them well out in Rhode Island and up to Vermont.

Same goes for WTIC-FM's sister station WRCH. Able to hear Lite 100.5 all the way into Vermont. For West Peak it has to be WZMX, but I am sure WWYZ and WKSS aren't to far behind.

Depends on what youre talking about.

Over all nuts and bolts, covering every catagory, I would easily put WEBE as the top signal. WEBE *used* to be a normal catch in the Springfield area before that LPFM signed on up there, it is easily listenable in Manhattan, it carrys well through New London, and even heading out Rte 6 towards Willimantic, you get it before WXKS takes over. What is amazing about WEBE is the fact it's mounted to the side of the united illuminating stack. That 6 bay, half-wave spaced antenna just rocks.

The West Peak Non D signals (WWYZ, WZMX and WDRC) , the Avon Mountain signals (WTIC-FM, WCCC), Rattlesnake Mountain (WRCH), all do very well for "corner to corner" coverage. I've always contended that WPLR's signal outdoes WKCI's, with the exception that WPLR has a lot more interfering factors on it's fringes. WKCI's signal is still a monster, weither it is better now than it was when it was on the WTNH tower is also up for debate.

A station not mentioned here , who has a very impressive in-state signal is WRKI. WRKI's signal does very well north and south, and to the west. It really is limited to the east by the terrain, but still does really well.

An honorable mention HAS to go to WJMJ on 88.9. For a B1 from Johnnycake Mountain, it does very well too.

I am very interested to know what is going to happen when WCTZ signs off from stamford in reguards to RF interference in greenwich and Stamford for west peak signals... sure you have 88.5 here as well but that is no where near what 96.7 throws out for RF.

KC 101's signal is lousy in New London County. It can hardly be heard, if at all, in most of Windham County.

107.9 WEBE has a very impressive signal in North Jersey being 50+ miles away....I have been able to catch it all the way to Dover traveling on I-80 before WKRF from Tobyhanna, PA started to kick in.......WEZN also makes it clearly but suffers from a few strong pirates while WRKI suffers from pirates and frequent heavy tropo from WAYV in Atlantic City......Also WCTZ from it current site covered North Jersey well and it will only get better when it moves south.......Years back WFOX used to make it here but is completly unlistenable now with heavy mixing with WRAT.

What are you driving bro? I drive all over New London and Windham counties as part of my job....from Thompson to Stonington to Plainfield and KC101 is always there.

Good discussion.....but not much discussion about the class A's....I think WPKX out of Enfield (yes, it's on Provin Mountain in Agawam) has the best class A signal in the state out of anyone licensed to the state. Thoughts on class A's??
