Best GM

Who is the best GM in the market? My vote goes to Michelle at Clear Channel. The staff all love her, the stations perform and she has market history. She also has a record of appointing men and WOMEN to key positions.Entercom has had so many GM's it is tough to tell. Infinity has a GM that lets the staff do their job, from reports on the inside. The guy at Crista is a sweetheart. Worst GM's. No question Mark at Sandusky and the new guy at Fisher top the list. These two run their own show and kill all creativity along the way. Staff is all begging to leave. It is ugly at both operations. Enough said!

How does Michelle do it all???

Entercom GM is a good guy. Let's people do their jobs and keeps corporate at bay. That is the key to a good GM. Have heard the same about Michelle at Clear Channel. Have heard very bad things about the Sandusky and Fisher GM's and the guy at Infinity is more interested in his dog than his people.

There was a day when GM's were excited about doing radio, not about spreadsheets and cutting costs. It is all part of the corporate radio. That is why the budget cutting GM's tend to win. Cut out talent, automate and play as many commercials as you can and you are a corporate superstar. What a shame.

Still fun to see stations like MOVIN and WOLF overcome management and surprise the market.

This is something a sales type can actually have a true insight on. Michael O'Shea, Shannon Sweatte, Steve West and Lisa Decker were the best GM's in Seattle. They understood sales, but also understood that talent and programming needed support and freedom. All excelled. The current group of GM's look like MBA's, not broadcasters with the possible exception of Mark Kaye who is kind of a character. The rest are just suits, that could as easily be running an insurance company. It is like most public companies these days.
Sad, but true.

Best GM in ED Radio

...Lest we forget Lawerence Edward Adams of KNHC....now retired and volunteering for the symphony...

Agree! Gary Bryan once saw KUBE ratings take a huge dive under his PD-ship. Saw Michael heading his way and dreaded the exchange ... only find Michael's reaction was "there are some books you worry about ... and some you don't". End of THAT subject!! Take some real confidence that not many would have the ka-hooonies to do any more.

Shannon, I noticed, would often stop in the hall and mention something he liked or appreciated. Years later I reflected on how that came across so much more honest than the ones who would issue a "memo" proclaiming what a great accomplishment "the team" did when half the time they didn't even know who the he77 was even ON the team!!

Great GM's, I think, are about confidence in the leadership they have in place. They let a PD come up with great product ... give the SALES teams the flexibility to pick and land the deals, make the numbers ... give the ENGINEERING the tools they need ... give the MARKETING the budget they need ... hold everyone accountable, but stay out of the way while they do their thing. The business used to have a lot of great ones!
