Best guesses for 107.3

Return of The Wave? The Smooth Jazz format has been yanked all over the country due to aging demos. Would Rubber City really want to go back to this?

I don't think it would be smooth jazz, but a Soft AC/"Lite Rock" station with the familiar "Wave" name would make sense.

Or it could be "The Wave" as in a popular crowd activity at a sporting event ;)

Heck, ELB continued using the "Wave" name under license from CBS (vis-a-vis KTWV/LA, now a Smooth AC themselves) for 107.3 HD-2. Obviously it must have went through in this recent sale. I personally would consider it a semi-reboot... enough to keep some sense of continuity from past to present. Almost what WNWV would have become had Bernie Kimble not been forced out as PD, IMO.

Wouldn't be shocked if they tried to bring back one or two hosts from the prior SJ format to keep that connection alive, while also bringing in several AC veterans to shore up the airstaff (goodness knows all of the connections made with Sue Wilson and Chuck Collins alone).

Interesting times...

...or perhaps an Adult Standards/Gold AC type format, similar to the music played on WLEC 1450 in Sandusky. Either way, the wave name would make sense, indeed.

So it's come to this.

Personally, I think the writer goofed up, and big. 'Smooth AC' and 'smooth jazz' are distinct formats. Listen to KIFM/San Diego and tell me that's a "smooth jazz" station.

But that's the risk RCRG might be taking, if indeed the "Wave" name is revived. People generally associate "107.3 The Wave" with smooth jazz or easy-listening, and have for 20 + years. They could unintentionally tune out new listeners by the name alone, and disappoint old listeners expectant to hear the previous format.

It almost sounds like this was written from the perspective of a soon-to-be-former V employee. Of course, they are verboten from saying anything on-air (even a goodbye), and V's FB fan page was apparently yanked yesterday.

The article also states that Mike Gallagher, Ravenna Miceli, Rocco and Brad Hanson all will be shown the door on the 16th. I'm not sure RCRG takes over just yet, though... it could be delayed pending on how quickly or slowly the FCC acts in general to approve the transaction.

So while they may be gone, the AAA format may still play on 107.3 well after that. Nor can I foresee a quick swap of the HD-1 and HD-2 channels; what with the HD-2 channel still operating in smooth jazz mode...

IMAO the most likely directions for 107.3 would be as follows:
1. Tighten up the current AAA format and actually promote it.
2. Soft AC... softer than WDOK.
3. A classic hits format in the style of Chicago's "Drive".
4. Talk format utilizing syndicated programming. (This is a long shot)

I forgot that the FCC already closed their end of the deal two weeks ago. It all rests now on ELBC and RCRG closing the transaction at their end.

I think it's pretty safe to say now that no rock format of any sort will see the light of day on 107.3 now.

An all-syndicated talk format is not in the offing, nor would it have ever been considered.

I still wouldn't be totally surprised if 197.3 used the resurrected "Wave" to evolve from smooth jazz to smooth AC. I also wouldn't be shocked if their "Wave" announcement is a red herring and the real format is yet to be revealed.

I'm curious as to whether 107.3 will do any stunting before re-launching the smooth jazz format...like ocean wave sounds on a loop or something for 24 hours. Then I wonder what will happen to the HD-2 channel? Is that where the AAA format will go then?

WNWV will most likely cease broadcasting in the iBiquity standard by the end of the year. Rubber City doesn't do HD; never has, never will.

As for the interregnum between December 16 and the possible format flip, who knows? The current AAA playlist could be fed in jockless form until then. Any prolonged period of stunting is HIGHLY unlikely.

RCR isn't really known for stunting. I would imagine that they already have their plans in place, so the flip would be quick.

I don't see letting the AAA format twist in the wind too long before going to "Smooth AC" (I would be shocked if they went pure smooth jazz).

Actually I think that article was right on. No doubt V was not perfect, and if the new Wave mimics KIFM's playlist then I guess that won't be AWFUL, but still I was hoping for something a tad bit more progressive out of RCR on this one. Go through the dial on Clevealand radio and two words come to mind: Extremely Lackluster.

I took a look-see at their playlist...think of it as mostly WDOK with a sprinkling of WZAK.

I would put credits on the "new Wave" being more along those lines, than all Kenny G/Dave Koz.
