Best Jingle Packages

Nothing was better than running a tight board with a kick butt jingle package and sounders.

Reach back into time (because there aren't any now) for the best jingle package in Cleveland or Akron radio.

Here's a vote for the WGAR Means Music and More package of the late 70's, early 80's.

Great news sounder (do, do, do, di, di,di). Great legal ID. Made a show flow with a big-time sound.
 
WGAR had so many great jingle packages over the years. I remember
when Chick Watkins hired me, he showed me a credenza in his office
that was loaded with nothing but jingle packages. I believe every
time PAMS and then JAM came out with a new package, WGAR bought it.
I just wish I had access to them. I'd have rolled tape on them all.
Two other packages stand out from way back when. The Color Radio
package from Sande-Green in 1959 used for years by WHK and 1962's
Sonosational package from PAMS also used by WHK.

How could I forget the Big 8's news sounder?

They also had a nice jingle package.

WIBC/Indianapolis had one of the best legal ID's I've ever heard.

It sure sounds like him. Baxter would also have had a connection to the late Dick Klaus from his WERE days.

Yes, it is. Jeff's also the imaging voice and VT'ed evening voice at CC standards WLEC/1450 in Sandusky. And as OA's said in the past, Jeff can make a show liner sound like an event. I agree.

That package was one of the all-time greatest, and in the case of Cleveland, parts of it were heard again, not only on WHK in its mid-1980s oldies incarnation, but also on WKYC around 1966-67 and some of the non-sonovox cuts were also used on WGAR in the early 1970s.

I beg to differ with you there.
I happen to think the package we run on WKDD is the best sounding jingle package on the air today (WNCI Xtreme 2003 from N2Effect).

Not biased...I always loved how they sounded on WNCI

The all-time crown for totally great jingles in this part of the world definitely goes to WGAR-AM of the 70's and early 80's. I do think that the "Music and More" jingles (actually PAMS Series 45) was probably the worst. The earlier PAMS projects for The Big 1220 (selected cuts from Series 18-42 and the un-numbered "CLYDE") were great. PAMS 44 was OK but you could tell that the really great talent was starting to leave the building. From 1975 on, WGAR's jingles (save for the older ones that stayed in the rotation) were pretty forgettable. Things got rolling again when JAM started doing the jingles around 1978 and cuts from LogoSet, Positron, Follow The Leader, et. al.

Some other memorable jingle packages over the years..... Chuck Blore's "Encore" customs for WKYC (1968).... PAMS' "Smilin' Through" custom for 3WE (1973)... and some of the off-the-wall things that Hugh Heller did for WJW in the early 70's. Of course, you can't forget The Big 8. Those Drake Chenault cuts on CKLW in the late 60's and early 70's (with a couple of encores both on CKLW-AM and FM in the 80's) were and are timeless.

One of the best things WGAR did was the way it would customize the Wolfman Jack show on Saturday night. Wolfman cut a lot of specialized stuff...requests to naming suburbs, intros for news anchors, contests...sounded like the hairy little man was sitting right there at Broadcast Park after pierogi and shrimp at the Seneca in Broadview!!

Are you referring to the "Power Radio" jingles?
 
Credit for the Wolfman Jack show should go to Bill Connors
who was hired as a young board op to handle remotes and
pre-recorded weekend stuff such as Wolfman. Bill always
used to ask "what if....???" about getting Wolfman to cut
various intros, outros, drop-ins, and ID's. Because Wolfman
was on the Big 1220 in Cleveland, he was happy to cut all
those "extra" things. Bill would then spend hours putting
it all together to get that "live right now in the studio"
sound. He really worked hard and did a great job. So much
so that eventually he became Prod Dir for WGAR-FM and held
the position for many years. I don't know what he's doing
these days.

Bill is still the production god at WGAR.

The "Power Radio" jingles were done by Tom Merriman and have been credited to CRC, but I have also heard that he produced them independently.

The Chuck Blore jingles are the ones originally used by Ken Draper (ex-KYW) at WCFL (1966-67). They were very elaborately orchestrated and were similar to the showbizzy jingles KYW used. I understand WKYC used the Blore jingles after they abandoned top 40 for something closer to AC or MOR, but before the station was sold and became WWWE.

According to Tracy Carman at the Media Preservation Society (the jingle guru), it was Tom Merriman Productions, apparently on his own. Not bad for being alone, huh?

The "New Generation" package, as the TM-produced jingles were called, originally debuted on WIBG and WMEX in 1966.

Ah...so this would have been closer to WKYC 1969. Post-Power, so to speak.

That was a classic!!! They used it for their "Killer Shark Weekend" back in 1975. It was one of those great workhorse cuts from the CLYDE series. There was a logo cut with a big brass hook on the front, followed by the call letters. Normally, they would be mixed with an a'capella front, as in "Million Dollar Weekend (brass)W-G-A-R". There were lots of mixes of that one with jock cuts, weekend cuts, etc. I do have one gag cut that starts (literally)with "D-J A'capella..." Of course the "Jaws" cut had the call letter logo altered as well. Those were the days!
 
Actually, I got my dates wrong on the "Encore" package. It debuted in 1969 when the station flipped from Top 40 to AC. It was taken mostly from the package that Blore did for WCFL that was on the air from '66 to '68 (or thereabouts). The package was actually piloted for KRLA in LA and also used on KYA in San Francisco. I would be interested to know if this series aired on any other stations. It was a classic.... long, elaborately orchestrated cuts with a killer big band sound and voiced by the Johnny Mann Singers. To quote one of the cuts.... "Never was your radio so radiant.... Never has your set had so much soul......"

I believe that the "Power Radio" jingles were credited to Tom Merriman as an independent project. I think he has already left CRC (or CRC had ceased to exist)and he had not yet hooked up with Jim Long to form TM. To my knowledge, the first TM-branded packages were "And The Beat Goes On" and "Charisma" which both debuted on WCFL in late '68.

After the "Encore" package, WKYC began using TM material. I know for sure that they used TM's "Design '70", but may have added some cuts from "Design '72" as well.

WKYC became WWWE in '73 and began using PAMS jingles. From 1977-1990, all of their jingles were from TM. They used the JAM "We Talk New York" series, plus a couple of custom cuts from 1990-1994. There were no jingles 1994-97. They briefly used another JAM composite package (cuts from "MetroLine", "SkyTrax," and a few others) in 1997.... and have been jingle-less since then.
 
Thank You! I produced and wrote and edited all the liners for Wolfman on Gar back then. At one point I had over 300 carts and mixing them in with the reel segments became hairy at times. In fact my work on that show was instrumental in getting me the full time gig here which I am still thankful to have today in the age of consolidation. Nice to know there is still someone out there who remembered that.

thank you for your kind words,whatever your real name is. Do I know you perhaps? (ahhhh it just hit me who you are how are you?) Yes I am still here at WGAR. Somewhere in my files I still think I have many of those liners I wrote on the old Big 1220 red letterhead paper with the flying note. Sure glad we ordered reams of that paper :)
I even have a case of 10 inch reels of airchecks of some of those shows along with about a dozen cassettes which i will get around to putting on cd some rainy day. What is even cooler is the fact they are in stereo from back in the day.
