Best jocks outside of mornings in Boston currently...

(crickets....)

OK I'll start! Gee Spin on Jamn. His delivery is great, he doesn't sound forced, he's got great energy, not to mention his mixing skills are insane. Kudos to you, Gee.

Agreed, Gee Spin is good...and his Back in the Day Buffet mixes are great.

I vote for Romeo on Kiss and, an old favorite, Karen Blake "The Madame" over on Oldies.

Adam Twelve, and Fred Toucher on WBCN and Sean McKinnon on WMWM ;D

I like small stations, especially WATD, where Liz Raven does the mid day shift. She interacts with the listeners, always answers the phone, and is as nice off the air as she is on.

Julie Deveraux is also a fav

The problem is that most "talent" on major market stations in the mid day, when they are not VT'd from East Bumfarcke, are reduced to reading liners.

As for BCN, I was scanning the dial on the way home friday and I can't believe what passes for radio these days on the once mighty 104.1

Paul Perry on WROR.

Lady D. on Mix.

Also, that overnight guy, Mike something on Mix too.

And all the DJ pros at Oldies 103.3 too!

You know... I have heard tapes of WBCN back when they first changed formats over from classical and even though I understand how innovative it was for the time, I have heatd college radio that sounds better than BCN did back then. I find it actually painful to listen too. All the jocks sound like they are so stoned that they about to pass out, most of the time they cant get the record to play, or they play the wrong record, or it shuts off in the middle of the song. I don't work for BCN or CBS radio or anything but they are my favorite Boston radio station. I like the on air talen and feel that I can relate to them, I like most of the music they play. I like Opie and Anthony, and I like Toucher and Rich. I routinely listen to Toucher and Rich from 3pm to 7pm daily. I am a 25 year old male so I am right in thier target demo, and I think they are doing a good job reaching people my age.

Many of the listeners were, too. I'm 51, and I was among them. They did a great job of serving the stoner, hippie, counterculture demo that existed back then. We all felt like those jocks were "one of us" in those days, laid-back loose freaks just hanging out, zoning out, and grooving on the tunes with us (and sometimes screwing things up like we did). They were intentionally the antithesis of the Top 40 professionals who were on the AM band back then.

Times changed, though. I guess you kind of had to be "there"... 8)

I am not at all trying to "knock" what BCN once was. At that time that was groundbreaking and very smart, they served thier audience and gave them what they wanted to make them feel a connection to the station. I am just countering the comment that ZRXOA 5248 made about "what passes for radio these days". I think BCN is well produced and has very good imaging. Some of the music they play isnt all my favorites but they do a play a lot of bands I don't hear on FNX (The Street Dogs, a local boston punk band).

I think thier DJ's are very good too. I think Adam 12 has immense music knowledge and does a very good music based show, I think he manages to connect with his audience very well and give his demo what they want. I think Toucher and Rich are excellent, I am the first to admit that they are not NPR but they really make the listener feel connected like they are hanging out with thier friends shootong the breeze, playing stupid games, and making fun of the fat kid. I was very skeptical when I first heard a show called "Toucher and Rich" were coming here, I liked Hardy and his music based afternoon show and I liked Mark Hamilton on from 6-10 or whatever, but these guys won me over. I think they give thier demo the kind of entertainment they want. Almost everyone my age knows who "the chilli guy" is and everyone my age that I know goes out of thier way to listen to the show wether you like them or not they are doing what they are paid to do they have an amazing loyalty among thier listeners.

/rant on. I hated BCN back in the late 90's early 2000's I couldnt stand nick carter, I listened to AAF religously (back when o and a were there) but now I refuse to listen to AAF I think carrie is just awful and the music they play seems to be targeted to males 12-16. Has anyone ever heard a break from "mistress carrie" they are all the same and go like this... (music bed playing underneath the whole time) "Hey, did you read in [local paper] about the guy who got his penis [cut off, caught in machinery, bitten off, etc...] whoa... thats what I call losing your head! I was in Iraq! Here's nickel back on the only station that really rocks...." thats it every damn time. If you read all access they did ten questions with her and she sais she used to be a class a CDL driver before she got into radio. She started as an intern at AAF and just stayed there. When O and A got fired she started doing overnights and then just slowly moved into afternoon drive. Is that how they get all thier talent? Greg Hill was once the WAAF Giraffe now hes the morning drive guy??? /rant off

I have always thought Julie Kramer (FNX) does a great job.

Mix 98.5 lineup of the late 90's was tops for what they do

Jackson (kiss) is probably the most deserving of AM drive currently

For pure personality tied to the music he/she is talking up....gotta go with Holly (BOS) on the blues show. I really like a person who knows the tunes and can tell a good back story. Too bad they shafted her for Elwood....the Lowe's/Home Depot of blues show....for shame.

Holly Harris - agree. Used to love the blues show on 'BOS (the only thing
on "BOS I would listen to...)

Carter Alan - always intelligent and informative, without being overpowering...

Huh?

Most people had other jobs before they got into radio. Yeah...most people start as interns and work their way up.

They promoted from within? Dude, that's great! In an industry that keeps giving chances to proven losers, they went with fresh blood. Good for WAAF, and good for Carrie.

EDIT: Middy beat me to it.

Holly was my guidance counselor in middle school, for real.

My point was that Greg Hill AND Carrie are AWFUL and UNLISTENABLE in my opinion, if you want to talk about "what passes for radio these days" you should be talking about WAAF. Everyone on this site wants to blame thier ratings decline on thier move from the paxton site, I think it's thier lame morning drive and awful afternoon drive shows as well as thier music programming in general. I say WAAF needs a new GM, PD, MD, Morning show, and AFTERNOON DRIVE show before they need to move thier stick again. Garbage that reaches CT and VT is no better than Garbage that no one can hear!

That may have been your point, but along the way you also made some points that have nothing to do with why or why not that station is, in your opinion, "unlistenable".

Someone staying at one station or working as a truck driver has nothing to do with their ability to be a good broadcaster.

you are absolutely correct I just think its funny that someone who calls herself a "Mistress" (I would think sexy hot chick in fishnets and vinyl) used to be a truck driver which to me is as unsexy as you can get. I also think its funny to picture Greg Hill dressed up in a Giraffe suit handing out bumpa stickas!
