Best Local Radio Stations in KY

Scanning through the dial across the commonwealth, what are the best radio stations in terms of their commitment to local programming and service to the community?

could wkrd fit that bill even though they are a sports station? regardless of the format, it seems to me they have a ton of local programming which is something you can't really say about a bunch of the larger stations in town.

I like what 107.7 the Eagle has done lately. Updating their imaging and adding songs to their playlist has really raised their listenability. The Classic Rock Not classic talk imaging was really getting old....

I'm surprised no one has mentioned WSON yet. Strong local commitment, and of course it's now also on FM and has a web presence ... fine station all the way around.

I'll second a vote for "The Home Team". Let me add WMMT Whitesburg and WSGS Hazard. All three truly serve the community.

The Bristol Broadcasting radio family in Paducah does a great job. The stations are live and local for the most part. Country 93.3 WKYQ still #1 after all these years. CHR Electric 96-9 is a close second, with News/Talk 94-3 WKYX, Classic Rock 94-7, and Classic Country Willie 102.1 rounding it out.

Also, a shout out to WKDZ in Cadiz. Awesome sounding small-town radio!

Thank you Captain. I know all of us at WKDZ work hard to make it worth listening too!

Another good local station is Benton's WCBL. Live jocks, great mix of oldies and classic hits, lots of sports(UK, St. Louis Cardinals, Marshall County High School sports). Jim Freeland and his group go a great job keeping the community informed.

WAKY Radio is live and local with the Wayside Christian Mission Radio-thon all weekend. On air announcements all week and boots on the ground all weekend. WAKY Radio at the Horses & Horsepower Car Show Saturday raising money for Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky. Announcements on the air for 2 weeks and boots on the ground Saturday 11a-2pm. WAKY Radio at the Glendale Spring Festival Saturday raising money for Kentucky Harvest. On air announcements for a week and boots on the ground all day. WAKY Radio at the Monarchs' Armed Forces Concert Sunday at Iroquis Park raising money for the Wounded Warrior's. On air announcements all week and boots on the ground for the show. WAKY Radio at Mike Lennig's Music Fest and Car Show Thursdays to raise money for the Crusade for Children. Announcements for the last 2 weeks and boots on the ground every Thursday evening through the promotion. Even though this is another stations charity, it is in our community and we are more than happy to help any way we can. WAKY Radio's Leesa Mitchell at the Hooray for Heroes celebration in Radcliff today honoring the men and women who keep us free. I am Les Cook, Program Director and Morning Mouth at WAKY Radio and I'm so proud of the people at this company who are out sacrificing their own time to give something back to the communities we serve.

I guess I should say I did like WQXX 106.1 out of Morehead. It's gone back to WMOR-FM and it's now branded Mix 106.1 piped in from other state now.

What the listeners dont know is that Waky plays itself to be a Louisville radio station when it is located in Elizabethtown. It wouldnt be any different than a station broadcasting in Louisville claiming to be in Lexington. Waky has a sister station in the same building WVLK that broadcasts as an Elizabethtown station. So whats the difference ? When Waky is doing traffic reports for a city 45 miles away they should be doing traffic reports for its own town.We have plenty of traffic problems here in E-town. The best part is Waky identifies itself on the hour as WAKY: Radcliff, Louisville. It cannot even identify its own hometown. This is why alot of people cannot take Waky as a credible station. ???

WAKY is licensed to Radcliff. It makes no difference whatsoever that their studios are in Elizabethtown.

Legally, they are required to mention Radcliff once per hour. Otherwise they can bill themselves as anything they want. And the fact is, they do provide some secondary coverage into Louisville, and have some listeners here.

WVLK does NOT provide the coverage to Jefferson county that WAKY does.
