i am new to town. im looking for your expert ideas on the best radio has to offer in state college. who is king in this market? who is emerging? who are some of the owners? are there any cc's in this market?

Denny Pompa may not be "king of the SC market" but he is the "king of radio" and knows a lot of stuff. You might try looking him up. There are also a couple of guys in Altoona who think they know everything and they'll probably be more than happy to answer your questions.

103.1 WQWK has been the #1 station 12+ for the past few rating periods, so they'd qualify as "king." Forever Broadcasting owns 6 of the local stations including QWK + 98.1 from Altoona, and a related company owns 3 more stations, for a grand total of 10. So they control the market. Only 2 other owners left, Magnum (105.9 "Joe FM" + 2 AMs) and First Media (95.3 "3WZ"). That's it. A pretty simple market, nowadays.

Is there any more to tell?

Fryman I am curious, I know that I am new to this market but I have never heard of Denny Pompa. I have heard of the other groups/stations mentioned. Why is he the king of radio?

IMHO, Chris Prospero (Boss Frog on 101.1) is the best jock in the morning hands down. Glad to hear he is back on in the morning again.

RIP - Pat Kain, his original AM Show co-host back in the 97QWK days.

No doubt "you are new to the market" if you're unfamiliar with Mr. Pompa. Denny has been a fixture in broadcasting since the 1970's having worked in several markets, several formats, and dig this! Both AM & FM. Once your ears get dry you will no doubt become familiar with Mr. Pompa and his work. He also does production for stations as far away as Montana. Ask anyone who the "King of Radio" is and you'll get your answer. Better yet, don't ask. It will only indicate that you are "green" to this market. By the way, if this is enough for the powerful Pompa, the man is a musician and has played with numberous groups. The only reason he stays in central Pennsylvania is because of a severe sinus allergy that doesn't do well in other climates. He's also alergic to my fries.

He is on WHPA 93.5 (Oldies) in Altoona.

In fact, he was the 24 hour voice tracker on the automation system a few years back, not sure if he still is or not as I no longer live in the area to listen.

"Best" implies something subjective. How about you do yourself a favor and try turning on the radio and judge that one for yourself? The only thing people on here are going to tell you is that "this station is the best" mainly because they probably work at that station. Oh, and by the way, just because a company owns a lot of stations in the market does NOT in any way, shape or form make them the best. Hasn't anyone ever heard of "spreading one's self too thin?" PAH! You people are a joke.

Ok....I have listened to "boss Frog" and find it laughable that he is the best there is according to some people on this post. Unless he is holding back becuse of "programming" I find anything he does on air as anything more than amateurish. A raspy weak voice and lackluster personality...if that is what you want to call it. A king of radio MUST have at least a voice, a personality, a witty sense of humor and superb timing. Any of those or ALL 4 preferrably... I hear none of that!

Chris is well known and well liked, and those are a couple of things that go a long way in radio. It would be fair to say that his current environment on 101 isn't conducive to hearing him at his best. For that to happen they'd need to shift him to a station down the hall. But, given the circumstances, he's doing fine.

ditto to what Jackandcoke said. Besides, "the whole radio voice" thing is way too overrated. Chris has proved this with his succcess in State College, he's been employed longer than anyone else over the past 10-15 years.

If State College radio is weak, why is so much $ invested into the 15+ radio stations in State College? 30 years ago when Zimmerman got started there were only two stations, things have change quite a bit, what say you Gotoguy?

Zimmerman (Neuhoff Eastern?) set the bar very high with the sale of RSC/QWK back in the early nineties at a price tag based on the huge success they had in a very uncompetitive market, and Burbach & Barker followed suit a few years later with MAJ/BHV & 3WZ just as the move-ins/new FM signals were surfacing. Since then it's really been all about consolidation and shuffling signals.

Bottom line is that SC is a very attractive market, but there are too many signals and not enough people.

??? Well if he is holding back because of "programming", he might want to have his people call his people and set up a meeting with himself because the last time I checked he was the PD!

Well,
there is several people that are talented individuals in the State College market.

I would have to vote for the following people:
1) Drew Shannon (JOE FM)
2) Steve Jones (3WZ)
3) Dave Shannon (WBLF)
4) Grant Armstrong (formerly with 3WZ)
5) Rod Burnham (now with Comcast, formerly Forever GM)
6) Greg Banks (now with Atlantic Broadband)
