Best radio sportscasters in NM?

Poll Question:

KKOB's Mike Roberts is a legend, but who else ranks as some of the best sportscasters in Abq/NM history? Are there enough to put together a top 5 list?

1. ?
2. ?
3. ?
4. ?
5. ?

Living in Albuquerque since 1961, for me,two voices have dominated the airwaves. Mike Roberts and Henry Tafoya. Different personalities, different styles, both very very good.

Pal Al Wannabe

Mike Roberts and Henry T are about it.

Too bad that Henry T. has run that station into the ground as it was a viable alternative to The Sports Animal.

Another name that came to this morning, Connie Alexander, started in Albuquerque as a 19 year old and eventually went national. Mike Powers also does a great job.

Being the die-hard Carlsbad Caveman that I am (Class of '90...Go Big Blue!), it hurts a little to type this. However, as a radio person, I love listening to the play by play of Jim Wilburn and Gene Dow on Artesia High School football games on KSVP 990AM. Good job, and very entertaining. The highlight show was cool to listen to after the game. I can still hear those words I detest more than anything as a fan, but can appreciate as a radio personality... "And THAT my friends...is another...Bulldog touchdown." DAMN!! I remember hearing that WAY too much recently. I'm proud to say, however, that the Cavemen never lost to Artesia while I attended HS ('87, '88, and '89...ONWARD CAVEMEN)!!! Thanks.

Mike Roberts.

Just ask him, he'll tell you ;) ;D ::) :-*

I like Andrew Paul who was pxp for the Lady Lobos when Flanagan took over and turned the program around.

Henry T always came off as a b.s.'r... but at least he seemed to care about local youth sports.

How about any of the NM Scorpions guys?

Mike Roberts - excellent...

Talking about Artesia and Carlsbad... another in that area is Ty Friend in Hobbs. He does a great job not only with the pxp but the coaches shows and other programming on KPER and KZOR...

Red Barber used an egg timer to make sure he gave the score of the game at one minute intervals...I bring this up because I tuned into a lady lobo game and I heard 6 baskets being scored and not once was given the score!!!! Therefore Mike roberts is the best because whenever I tune in he is always giving the score!

You’re right, Mike is a true sportscaster and knows how to keep the radio listeners up on the game. I first worked with Mike at KOB-TV in 1970/71; Gary Kanin did the Evening News and Mike did the Sports portion. Mike has been the voice of the Lobos, both basketball and football, plus he announced the Dukes Baseball games over the years – what is it now – 38+ years. I guess he’ll keep doing it as long as his health holds up.

Trivia question: Everyone knows him as Mike Roberts. What is his given name? (First name)

I don't know Mike Roberts' real name, but Gary Kanin was actually Gary Kloppenburg.
Dern it, that was trivia question #2. ;) ;D
