Best Radio Website

After some urging from this Board KPLZ launched a new website today, which brings up a question: who has the best website in town? After scanning the new KPLZ site and looking at some other stations here are my random comments:

KUBE, KJR-FM: Too busy. Streaming is good, but hard to navigate sites. Cluttered.

KMPS, KBKS, KZOK: All the Infinity sites are a mess, except JACK which is pretty clear and to the point. Ad placement detracts from the site. Hard to navigate for non-listener club members (VIP etc). Really quite a mess, except JACK.

MOVIN: Nice site. Good streaming, clear and too the point. My critique is that there is not much there. I assume when they add staff and promotions it will fill out.

STAR: Much better than their old site. Lots to do, and clear information. Big problem is that it lacks streaming. Key problem for their new site, but maybe its coming.

WOLF, KMTT, KISW, KNDD: Best sites in town, hands down. There are some Entercom sites that need help, but these four are easy to navigate, fit their stations and aren't built to sell ads as the priority.

My thoughts. I guess if they launched a new STAR site, they probably won't be changing format any time soon. Made for fun posts.

I find it absolutely impossible that Star 101.5 said "oh...we need to change our website because the folks at Radio-info.com don't like it".

Haha. Just my observation. ;)

Very funny! I am sure KPLZ Management read radio-info and immediately created a new website. So much for the argument that KPLZ is changing format because the company won't spend money on a website or advertising. The station is doing both.

After reading all this I checked out the website. It is one of the best in town, but it has it's flaws. There is no streaming, a major mistake. Where is the song history? The site lists last song played, but no history. Longer bios and more downloads would also add to the use of the website. I completely agree that the Infinity sites are the worst and most cluttered in town. My favorite sites are KMTT (best by a mile) KNDD and for a female older station STAR's new site is pretty robust, provided they address the above flaws. Course why would they, since they only put up the website to address concerns about a format flip voiced on radio-info. That gave me a good laugh.

Hmmmm, if you google Star 101.5 it gives you www.star1015.com as the URL. However, if you type in that URL, you are forwarded to the www.kplz.com URL. Makes me think although they have redone their website with Star graphics, they may be rebranding the station back to KPLZ soon. It is just a simple flip of the graphics and a text search and replace to do that. Otherwise it makes no sense to me why they would start using www.kplz.com since KPLZ is really not part of their branding.

Much as it angers me, STAR bills a ton of money with their crappy female demo, so I doubt they will flip. Good detective work in keeping KPLZ.com. My bet is if MOVIN wins this Winter and Spring, STAR is toast. They will flip back to CHR and knock off a weak KBKS. You could even keep the lame Kent and Alan show for a few years to transition the dollars. Go right down KUBE and KBKS's throats. I'd love to hear it.

Mamma, your persistent cheerleading for Movin' is understood, and at this point, expected. I thought this thread was a discussion regarding websites, not the merit of stations.

In other words, what's your point? Star's "crappy female demo?"

Is that a serious post?

AQH must not be in marketing or branding. I am, and I have seen exactly what I suggested done before. It is a good way to get the new URL indexed in Google so that the old URL goes away.

TheFrameGuy must not be in radio. I am, and I have not seen what was suggested.

To imply that a station is going to re-position, re-brand and re-invent itself based on an internet URL redirection or indexing is laughable.

Try typing in whtz.com. Think Z-100 in New York is going to ditch Z-100 and go as WHTZ? Try khmx.com or kkrz.com. Do you think those stations are going to dump their names to go back to their call letters?

Not only are they not very savvy in radio, but don't understand the idea of covering bases with various combinations of URL registration including call letters, catch phrases, and dial position. Everything has some hidden meaning related to a format change ::)

I agree that to suggest that a new web site was launched because of an opinion from a low-populated bulletin board is laughable. Allegations like that on this board really illustrate the divide between who know something about the radio business, and who don't.

Then you have the under the surface level of web sites such as www.bobrivers.com or the almost now dead www.robinandmaynard.com which support the air talent but to some extent the stations as well. www.garycrow.com and www.bjaday.com are a couple others that come to mind.

As I recall Andy Savage used to have a site as well?

Some of the Air Staff sites are better in my opinion because they are updated on a more frequent basis and in many cases have content you would never see on the stations web site.

Anything Else??

OK...so we (a) built a new website, (b) changed the URL back to STAR1015 from kplz.com
Is there anything else that you folks need at this point?

(And sorry, mama .... can't do much at this point about "the station sucks"....but we'll keep trying!)
