Best Ratings In The Country?

I know there has been a lot of talk about the success of certain stations in Boston over the years, but I just saw the following (12+) ratings for a Country station in TN.

1. WXBQ-FM ~ 23.9 ~ Country ~ Bristol Broadcasting

I don't recall seeing any station in the country with a higher rating than this, do you? Pretty amazing.

WXBQ typically has the highest AQH share in continuous measurement (4 book per year) markets. WIVK/Knoxville has the second highest share (they had an 18.4 share this summer.)

I listen to WXBQ every time I drive between Nashville and Boston - they own the ratings, but they're also a really well-put-together station. Live 24/7, big morning show, lots of giveaways, and connections to the artists - Nashville is well aware that WXBQ has that share, and lands them the big country guests other small market stations could only dream of.

They also have a rabbit-costumed mascot, fitting with the station's slogan of "24 Carrot Country".

Back in the late 70s or early 80s it was rumored that 'COZ purportedly had ratings in the 13s, and were one of the highest rated AORs around in a major market, as they were temporarily kicking 'BCN's ass with John Sebastian's and Stuart Street's "Kick Ass Rock 'N Roll" ! Anyone have any stats from back when Radio actually mattered ?

bristol tennessee might be one of the biggest dumps of a market in the US....tri-cities my ass, it's 3 podunk towns with a big ol' nascar track as its centerpiece...I'm not surprised that a country station is pulling a 23 in that market. I was flown in to interview for a job there...worst two days of my radio job search career...although the hotel I stayed at had a beautiful bathroom.

rant over

WCOZ had a huge run in 1981, peaking with a 12.6 share (Persons 12+) in the Summer '81 book. WBCN had a 4.6 that book. That 12.6 was the highest share among the top 10 markets at the time.

KMOX in St. Louis had some astronomical ratings in past years, I think some were near 50%.

I would wager that, if measured, the highest share station is probably somewhere in Alaska. There's several communities, some of reasonable size (few thousand people, minimum) where there's really only one or two stations that are receivable. Maybe more via skywave at night (which is not inconsiderable in Alaska!) but nothing else local.

Plus sometimes you just get weird books. IIRC it was two years ago that WEOS had the highest TSL of any station in the Rochester market (12+)...which is quite remarkable given that you can't hear WEOS in Rochester proper at all; co-channel WITR makes it impossible. There must've been a handful of serious WEOS fans closer to our corner of the market that got books that quarter. It was good for a chuckle and an "I Drink Your Milkshake" joke on our website.

That was the last double digit rating for any Boston radio station until Kiss 108's 10 rating this past summer, and I daresay that Kiss' 10 today is more vauable that 'COZ's 12.6 adusted for population inflation and ad $
