Best Rock Station in CT??

98 Rock WXTB in Tampa

We don't have a good one in CT.
If you want classic rock, WPLR is great. WRKI (I-95) is also decent.

The aforementioned 98 Rock is a great active rocker IMHO. They throw in some alternative and even some classics too.

When will WCCC realize the '80's are over and play some decent rock? I think it's great that they're independent and non-corporate or however they tout themselves, but they sound terrible.

Yes I agree both I-95 and PLR do a pretty good job... I havent had a chance to listen to WCCC as of late. Why do they sound terrible?

IMO, In Connecticut, WRKI I-95 wins hands down.

I still don't understand why Stamford's Cox- owned 95.7 WEFX 'The Fox' constantly touts itself as "Fairfield County's Only Classic Rock Station". Brookfield is also in Fairfield County, and WRKI is, and has been located there for the last 30 years...

Great point Alan!

I have noticed that WRKI plays alot more deeper tracks than PLR does, so I have to agree with you on I-95!

X ;D

95.9 WFOX is all classic rock and therefore can get away with saying "Fairfield County's Only Classic Rock"...when they say "Fairfield County" they refer to the 7 towns of the Stamford-Norwalk market which is referred to as "Fairfield County" in terms of location.....WRKI however, is mainstream rock and plays a decent amount of current and new rock, espcially at night. I think the only time there would be a problem is when I-95 has an all classic weekend where they would play all classic rock, but for all intended purposes WRKI is mainstream rock. WPLR is in the same category as WRKI musically, however I would agree with the post before that I-95 goes deeper especially with new songs coming out..aka Incubus. Smaller markets allow this to be possible. I honestly think all 3 of them have their nitches in their cities, which is great.

IMHO, 'CCC is The Rock.

They are Active Rock (harder, more New Rock w/some hard classics) great production & features, as opposed to I-95 (more variety, but better than tired 'PLR, or WFOX, no matter what the ratings).

TOS!!! WAAF!!!!...
whoops wrong state.
Wccc is good but they have their ups and downs... I just got my HD radio and I don't get any rock here in greenwich :-( 2 country tons of classic rock AC classical. but %#! I got it for rock music and with the 20+ hd signals I get not one has rock

WPLR is god-awful. They play they same boring, tired tracks over and over with absolutely no variety. WAQY from up in Springfield is even worse, believe it or not. I love rock music, but those two stations put me to sleep both musically and with their DJ's. WCCC has great personalities, but the music mix is only okay. I don't like all the newer stuff they play. WRKI plays too much stale stuff, like WPLR, but unlike WPLR they mix in some newer, deeper, and more interesting music, so I enjoy listening to them sometimes. However, the best rock station has to be WHCN. When I turn on WHCN I never know what I'll hear, whether it is Tesla, Steve Miller, Concrete Blonde, or whatever. They play music from all eras, and I love when they reach down deep into their music library. I wish they'd add even more variety such as the 1990's hits from rockers such as Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, and Bryan Adams that were very popular at the time but don't get played like their 70's and 80's songs do.

Hey Roger,

Agreed on 'PLR & 'AQY. I used to work @Wacky102 when they were Top-40 & Springfields' Classic Rock, & I liked it better when they were Top40. Since that phased out, they should mix it up a bit. What a signal! Used to get calls from NH, VT, MA, CT & NY. No wonder legendary PD Neal Mirsky (WYSP, KQRC, etc.) recently left - he probably did all he could do within the confines of mgmt. A great station that is also owned by Saga is Lazer99.3/Northampton. A smaller signal, but a great music mix. Their moniker is "Everything That Rocks!" Believe it or not, is 'HCN really a Rock station? FMQB calls it Rock AC, AllAccess calls them Classic Hits, & R&R calls them Hot AC! Agreed that they should play more Boss, JC Mellencamp & Bryan Adams.

PLR is about the worst rock station around. their ratings are awesome...because of their heritage, and because they have no competition in the market. they are really bad - and stale, and totally predictable. shock trivia folks is about as predictable as "bad to the bone" is on wplr. stink boring rock station. connecticut is waaay uderserved when it comes to rock. btw - ccc ain't so great either.

I like WPDH'h new killer signal on 106.3 in HD down here in SW CT. It knocks out 106.1 WBli pretty good because 105.9 that spanish station is in HD as well. 105.9 is the only one I can clock in HD and 106.3 I get Rds display with a bit of trouble.
I 95.1 is great but in greenwich their signal is pretty hashed up especially when their norwalk relay is out.
if I were to bet that105.9 and 106.3 hadn't turned on their HD that I would get WBLI in HD. would any of you agree??

Actually, 'PLR does have competition in the market-- 95.9 WEFX in Norwalk/Stamford. Both are equally deplorable, IMO-- but at least EFX isn't a heritage rock station that's been dumbed down to a 100-song playlist and a bunch of card readers (it's just another average station that's been dumbed down to a bunch of card readers) ;D

WFOX does not come in up in New Haven. They compete in Bridgeport but that's it. It starts to die just past Milford. 3,000 watts can only go so far up the shoreline.

Anybody like The River? I gotta say that when I listen to them they surprise me every now and then with some great oh wow songs.

Yes!! I really enjoy The River too. Calling it a rock station it a bit of a stretch. I think I've heard it classified as a Rock AC before. But, they do seem to have a fairly wide-ranging playlist.

I agree with the comments that WPLR has a very stale playlist, but they do seem to have a very loyal audience that keeps them near the top in New Haven. You hear them everywhere from the local deli, to auto body shops across New Haven. At one time, they did through in some new stuff. Do they still do that, or is it pretty much all classic rock these days?

WCCC has no idea of its potential IMHO. You can still be a rock station with out sounding like you're boradcasting from your parent's basement.

The River makes me nautious. It sounds like they screw around with the song audio to make all songs sound similar. I don't know what it is but I don't like it. It's way too processed or something and the station just seems fake and automated.

Really?
I don't get that...But, thats just my opinion. I think it's a very well put together station...Don't get me wrong, it's not my top pick BUT, a nice break from my pre-sets once in a while.
