In the spirit of the surprisingly successful "Worst SD Radio Format Ever" thread, what's the best San Diego radio morning show ever?

For me, it's Murphy and McKeever on Q-106.

Jeff and Jer.
Hudson and Bauer a close second.
 
The Best Morning Drive Shows

Howard Stern, oh sorry this is
San Diego. Okay..


Ernie Myers-woke up San Diego at KOGO
for 25 years & was ranked #1 for most
of his stay, then at KSDO-AM he led
a highly talented morning show to
ratings success in the 80's & early
90's. He showed how it's done, the
dean of morning show hosts in San Diego.
Ernie was personable,in-touch with
the movers & shakers, & loved horse
racing at Del Mar. Class act, hall
of fame.

Charlie & Harrigan. (Their original
stay in San Diego at KFMB 1972-1975).
They always aimed down the middle of
the road in their humor and content
but they were funny and inventive as
hell. Before C&H, KFMB was basically
a parking lot. Took an underperforming
station & led it to much of the success it
enjoyed for the next 35 years. Their impact
can't be understated. They saved a low
ranked station, & KFMB-FM was nothing more
than a rack of reel to reels touting "Music
only for a woman". Ask Paul Palmer or
John Lynch. Don't forget Jack Woods also
programmed KFMB "The MightY" KUFF-MUB"
Back then.

Jeff & Jer-Tremendous at compelling
content & creating a relationship with
their target listener. Have managed
to age with their audience, & can
make the difference between being a
winning radio station, and a parking lot.

Perry Allen-He only did mornings in
San Diego for 3 or 4 years in the late 60's
early 70's, but while at KDEO 910-AM, Allen
was by far the most creative morning
talent in town. Prank phone calls,
stunts, parodies, listener get-togethers,
and funny bits. It's funny to hear a bit
that J& Jer or Dave, Shelly & Chainsaw do,
that Allen did 35 years ago, and was funnier.
He later went to KFI, and wrote for Laugh In,
Carson, etc.

Hudson & Bauer. Best years were the early one's.
Great at seizing the moment (before Jeff & Jer
ever did this stuff) whether it was a Chargers
rally or a fundraiser. They created a community
that doesn't really exist anymore. Mac Hudson
gave the show an edge.

Jules Brandt and Larry Himmel - Sure lets take phone calls all morning long one the same subject and call that a show...

Shawn and Donna - A female Jeff and Jer that weren't. Two women with nothing in common! A fake, and poor copy of a first rate mornig show.

Royce Blake and "The World Famous Goat Boy." - Here's a good way to screw up a new radio station, fire Charlie and Harrigan and put a pair of no names together, have them yuck it up and play fake rim shots after everything.

Goss and Garett/Stevens and Grudnick/The Joneses -
Different jocks, same show. Get a man and woman together to "perk up the morning." Awe gee... "We love to listen around the office, just nowhere else..."

Which station?
KGB when they were good?
91X when they had a loser as a producer?
Xtra 690 when they wanted out of their contract?

Or KFMB when they were dissed by management?

I'd Take KGB personally.

Which ones? The original 70's version from the old CHR B100, or the newer 80's AC version? Or how about the 2 minutes Bobby spent at KRMX?


I liked them on B100 in the 80's, never heard the original version though I read that they were really good (and very successful).

I may have to go back and re-do my bottom three now that you mention some of those! I forgot all albout Royce Blake and Shawn & Donna! Stevens & Grdnick weren't really that bad, they were just very formulated and it didn't work in SD. Dean Goss was great as a solo jock, but I never much cared for him in mornings. Take your pick with the Joneses! Good call. You have a much better memory than me, but then again, I've come and gone from the market many times over the years.

I liked Les Turpin on KGB BOSS RADIO 136 KGB wow thats going back can't find any air checks on him anywhere

I never listened to them on 690, but I heard them part of the time on KGB
and 91X.

Never heard them on KFMB either.

There was a Rich Brothers during the disco era? Must have been spending
too much time in high school to notice radio back then.

Yes, the original morning show on B100.
Bobby Rich anchored mornings, I think until 1978 or so, and then Shotgun Tom took over for a while. Then circa 1980 or 1981, some genius exec at Midwest TV (and there are soooo many of those over there) decided what B100 really needed was to "grow up" with their audience (unstead of just letting the old audience go and preping a new audience), and B100 became adult contemp. I don't know who was on after that, but shortly thereafter, B100 decided that they could be a more AC copy of Z100 NY's "morning zoo" and so Bobby Rich came back, and they were modestly successful, making the station lots of money up until circa 1990 when yet another genius at Midwest TV (there are sooooo many of those over there) decided that Jeff and Jer on the competing Y95 would be better.

The rest, as they say, is history...
