Best signal in Cincinnati

I wanted to rile up some discussion here, and this could be a good topic. I know WLW has the best AM signal in Cincinnati, bar none, heard in Detroit and almost into TN daytime, and in most of the Eastern US at night, but I was wondering who had the second-best AM signal, and the best FM signal.

Do some of the Cincinnati FMs get good signals into Dayton, and do Dayton FMs bring good signals into Cincinnati?

Of course, WCKY 1530 has a great night signal.

It seemed like WAKW had the best FM signal. At least it did 20 years ago when it was more hellfire and brimstone.

I always thought the Cincinnati stations came in much better in Dayton than vice versa. Which was unfortunate, considering the state of things at the time.

Best Cincy FM signal into Dayton is 94.9 (Fairfield). 96.5, also being a northern suburban licensed facility is strong too. WGRR is so-so, better in the south suburbs. Q102 is iffy, WEBN gets hammered by Hot 102.9, 94.1 and 98.5 are noisy. K99.1 is the best Dayton signal into Cincy.

Second best AM signal in Cincy might well go to WKRC 550. Definitely wins during the day & may well be better at night in Dayton than WCKY is, given the skywave cancellation that eats at their high end dial position before you get too far north of the Queen City.

I would say WAKW still has one of the BEST signals in Cinci... broadcasting from pretty much the heart of Cinci putting out 50kw... I would say it has a VERY nice signal... and they have come along with a great Christian AC/CCM Mix.

As far as AM stations go, WLW is by far the best signal without question. During the day, WKRC is the second best. However at night, in terms of sky wave, WCKY is definitely the second best followed by 1360-WSAI.
I have actually pulled 1360-WSAI in before in Tulsa OK, Milwaukee Wi, south Florida, and Albany, NY....

In Youngstown the only station from Cincinnati I can receive all day is WLW but at night I can also listen to 1530 and 1160 WDJO.

In Chicago WLW comes in day & night.
WCKY comes in well at night & WKRC only at night. Daytime on 550 we hear St. Louis.

What radio do you use for the majority of your DXing radioman? Is it the G5? It must be good because you have to null out 560 WIND up there.

WCKY has a killer signal in North Carolina. We can hear it from the late afternoon till the early morning most of the time depending on the time of year. WLW is second best here WSAI can be heard sometimes but we never hear WKRC.

I use the G5 alot especially when I travel, but the C Crane more at home. I live about 40 miles from WIND's transmitter site and nulling them has become easier since they shut down IBOC.
When I'm driving during the day I can often hear 550 in St. Louis.

I've listened to WRRM 98.5 in Lexington KY in the car.

I recieved WRRM as far south as Richmond, KY. during a rainy trip to Tennesee one December. The Cincy FMs come in really well on I-70 around Brookville, OH better than in Dayton itself. In Crossville, TN I have heard WCKY (at the time still WSAI) blasting in, WLW not quite as strong and 1160 (when it was still Bob), and 1360.

Pretty much all the Cincy FM's are received into south Dayton. The only exceptions would be the Wiz ever since the Ultimate Oldies relay station moved to 101.1...also EBN gets interfered from Hot 102.9 in spots. I agree with gr8 on 94.9 being the best Cincy FM signal in Dayton. There is a null of all out of town signals around the CC tower near I-75/Dryden Rd, but they recover north of downtown. Regarding AM...as mentioned....WLW is in a class all by itself. I regularly received WLW quite well in Florida at night listening to Marty and Joe.

I am familiar with the C Crane and of course the Superadio, but what is the G5?

The G5 is made by Grundig. It's a nice radio & small size which makes for a good traveling receiver.
It has AM, FM, & SW bands.

How many air miles is that?

It's come a long way. My first radio job was at WAKW in 1967. A 1950 transmitter with windows on the front that showed the red hot tubes bustin' their butts to put out 1000 watts into a horizontal only antenna on a shorter tower than they have now producing 4.8KW ERP. I went to Roger Bacon HS that year & on my cheap transistor radio, it was not easy to hear WAKW there at what I recall being 4 air miles.

I would say that without a doubt WLW has the best , most powerful signal in Cincinnati, Ohio.
I remember back in the 70's I could easily pick up WEBN when I moved to Columbus, As well as Q102.
I was also able to pick up QFM96 in Cincinnati on cloudy, stormy nights.

WLW has if not the best, certainly one of the best AM signals anywhere in the US.
