Best Small Market AM's?

A

Hey, we all love 'em! What are some of the better small market AM stations in the state?

The only ones I'm familiar with are in Baldwin county, but I think WHEP 1310 in Foley is a pretty good station. It shows up in the Mobile ratings, but it's not a Mobile station.

I take it we're restricting this to Alabama?

I'll second WHEP - not all that city-slick but good local programming.

Are any of the Shoals AMs still locally done? WBTG, WSBM, WZZA and WLAY come to mind as potentials if any are still local.

No other small AL AMs come to mind right now... Over here in Mississippi there are still quite a few down home small market AMs doing some local programming.

What about WSLV 1110 on the TN/AL state line in Ardmore? Got to love that old blue truck in the parking lot.

HaHa. Yes. Also, one that would make my list is WTLS. Pretty good station. Think they won ABA Station of the Year a few years back.

Alabamamic beat me to it-- 1300 WTLS in Tallassee comes to mind with the effort Butler Broadcasting puts in.

Zach- WSBM 1340 is now Fox sports off the bird 24/7. WBTG is either automated or just plays reels from 30 or 50 years ago as memory msic, although they do have a "swap shop" with lots of calls. Can't hear ZZA here. WFHK Pell City is a good local AM. They're live till around 11 during the week and also do a swap shop with lots of calls. They also do Pell City HS football.

That's a shame those stations are automated. I don't recall what station it was exactly, but I remember a urban/oldies AM out of the Shoals area that had, IIRC, local jocks back when I heard it in the 90's. That was a long time ago.

I'd forgotten about WFHK - used to hear it regularly in Irondale and it was always interesting to listen to.

Shoals has an AM that specializes in nothing but Muscle Shoals music, if that the one you're thinking of. Can't remember the calls, but it is a really neat station with one helluva niche!

By the way, it's WLAY and they are on the FM dial now via translator. Awesome!!

Oh yeah - I forgot about them. Good choice. So few stations of any type showcase 'local' music anymore.
