best source for tubes?

Looking for a pair of 4-400c and a pair of 12by7a. bad power problems last night killed the whole modulator section in our transmitter, reports I'm hearing say transformer shorted in substation, putting ~150kv on distro lines in the area which run 13kv.

Stephen,

Check with RF Parts. I've been getting my glass tubes from them for a while now. You might check with D & C Electronics also.

In my experience with a couple of RCA BTA 1R's it's more important who makes the tubes than where you buy them. I seem to have good luck with the Amperex branded 4-400's made in France. Bad experience with the Chinese tubes, short out blow meter shunts, and short life. The Amperex tubes last about 2 years runnung 24/7 in my RCA.

Cheers!

I couldn't agree more, VT. Last time I bought 4-400s from D&C, (and admittedly, it's been quite some time) I was able to buy NOS Eimacs quite reasonably. RELL was able to supply the French Amperex tubes at one time... not sure if they're available anymore. If they are, get yer wallet out...

got amperex 4-400c from richardson, not sure on the cost, the owner just ordered them and handed them to me today.

Green and yellow box?

Amperex as we know it has been gone for quite some time. Being that "amperex.com" redirects to RELL, I suspect that they've purchased the rights to use the Amperex name and logo and are rebranding tubes.

Good luck with them, and please let us know how they work out for you. I have several rigs using 4-400s still in service, and I suspect a lot of other folks on here do too.

The Amperex 4-400's are made by Covimag in France. I have had very good results using them in The RCA BTA 1R. (18 to 24 months)

working good so far, have yet to see a set make it through an entire lifetime since I've been around the station, always something that takes them out, lightning, entergy having something break, etc.
