If you want to see some action return to this San Francisco board, you'll have to include defunct stations in our personal favorites for "best." For music, I still miss KKCY "The City" as an intelligent and easy to love adult approach to rock without all the spit and sweat of the harder formats that might still survive as either "Classic Rock" or "Classic Hits." How long did Jim Gabbert let it continue? A year or less? When I happen upon a Kate Bush song in my collection, I have "The City" and their top-notch hosts to thank for making me aware of her talent.
KKSF later became my default station for music. Tho' I thought they low-balled in on about 1/3 of their music by including a lot of Yanni and saxophone pap, they did define their version of "smooth jazz" format California-style by including a lot of the catchier "new age" instrumentals that Northern California and European artists released. Their one vocal per set was almost always something with some lyrical depth. For a pop format, I thought KTYD in San Rafael was sounding good, before they were sold to Saul Levine in the 1990s. (I didn't get to hear them as freeform KTIM, which I'm sure a few folks will remember fondly.)
While I'm no longer living in the area, I do default to KCBS for traffic and spot news, and KQED for national coverage when I'm visiting, and will try KALW to see if their highly-varied schedule will resonate with me at the time I tune in. I like jazz, but find KCSM too brassy and self-conscious. KJAZ, all those years ago, defined solid straight-ahead jazz for me. For classical, KDFC is probably one of the most approachable versions of that format in the country, and is another one that I'll make a point to listen to, if traffic coming in from the airport isn't a mess!
Does anyone else have a local station or two they make a point to listen to everyday, not as the "least objectionable" choice, but as something they really enjoy?
