Hi all! Just doing an informal survey about who YOU, the radio listeners of Houston, think is the best traffic reporter. Thanks in advance for your responses!!

Although, I HATE giving props to Radio One, J.P. Spees at KBXX & KMJQ is outstanding. On the TV side, it's Don Nelson at KTRK.
______________

Out of curiosity, what do you have against Radio One (other than them axing local Funky Larry in favor of syndicated Tom Joyner)?

They also forced JJ Williams into a part-time gig, he eventually left. Their community involvement, since Clear Channel sold them, is not anywhere near what it used to be. This company acts like it is the voice of the Black Community, yet its actions and how it operates, is the total opposite. They are a "cookie-cutter" company that wants all their stations to sound alike and do the same things in every market. I travel a lot. I don't know any two cities that are exactly the same. Radio stations should be unique to their market. Majic 102 used to "sound like Houston". It is FAR from it now, they sound so homogenized. I know "The Box" sounds a little more community oriented, but still they are no where near what they used to be when CC owned them, too. And, I'm by no means defending CC. I have big issues with them, too. Radio One throws the "If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It" book right out the window. They want all their stations to sound the same regardless of community and that is just wrong.

I could mention a few others gray areas with their company, too, but I don't want to go there. It is my personal beef. And, no you can't argue with their success in the market, but I still say if Majic 102 had some actually competition as in all things being equalled (signal strength, talent, etc), they'd be in trouble. If Cox wanted to, they could try it with KHPT.
______________

The best traffic reporter isn't doing traffic anymore. It was Lanny Griffith the old "Traffic in Bondage" guy at the old K101. Now Lanny is doing lamo schtick in the mornings for Fox 26. Someone ought to pay Lanny lots of $$$$ and get his traffic in bondage back on somewhere. That guy is intensely funny and talented and is being wasted over there at 26.

Lanny

I was wondering if Lanny would make an appearance on KFNC.
did Pat even call him?

Stewart Russell (a/k/a Steve Rubin) at KLDE. Stewart has been doin' it for many years and sounds as good today as he did 25 years ago!

Hands down My favorite is Vikki Taylor on 104 KRBE. I Just love her personality, besides flying around in the Metro Helicopter takes guts!

There are several really good traffic talents here in town. Stewart Russell comes to mind as does, Lisa Manavelli, and like many of you have mentioned, Lanny. However, being a former Traffic Jock, it is my humble opinion that the VERY best traffic reporter in Houston is Joannie Green. She knows Houston like a Key Map, was the first helicoper traffic reporter in Houston in the KILTcopter, and used to run her own traffic service. Plus she has a great voice! Joannie can call me late at night anytime she wants. She gives GREAT phone!!! I think she does weekend reports for KUHF but I could be wrong. Definitely worth a listen.

Colonel St. James

I agree Colonel. There are a couple of more ladies in this town are worth mentioning. TJ Callahan is very good. I worked with her for many years on KILT. Susie Loucks, AKA Elaine Closure, is excellent. I've worked with her many times on other stations. My ex-wife Lacy Fortune was good, too. She is no longer in radio.

One of the 1st ladies doing traffic was Kay on 790 KULF, in it's top 40 days. Jim Tate did mornings along with David Fowler delivering the news (both deceased.) Sometimes Johnny Gilbert would be in the KULF bird. Johnny was killed when the KULF bird crashed while covering a fire. This was 1974.

Another former KILT guy, John Wesley Downy is very good. Actually there are quite a few cats who have been around for a long who are good too. I'm sure I have forgotten some.

Cecil Knight

Cecil Knight did traffic on Oldies 94.5 with the Colonel several years ago...too long ago to remember now. But the guy is good. Quick with the one liners and he knew the streets and alternates to take. His replacement on KLDE was Darby Douglas...who seems to be holding his own at Channel 11 these days.

Absolutely...Cecil rated right there at the very top. Same with Vicki Taylor...she rates up there at the very top. Others most certainly worth noting...Captain Lance (Locher), Marty Ambrose, Chopper Bill (Waldrop), John Winder, Suzie Loucks (Elaine Closure), T. J. Callahan, Kelly McClain (related to Jeff McClain and the late Hal McClain), and, of course, Joanie Greene. In more recent times...Bill Jackson did an outstanding job, as does Laura Reynolds.

I really liked Rosie Chance when she was at KRBE.
Vicki is good of course.
Gotta' love Sharon Shock doing those homogenized traffic reports in the "whatever it is this week Traffic Center."
At least she's smoking hot!

I was also glad to see Bill's name thrown out there. I remember meeting him--classy fellow.

Cecil Knight was undoubtedly the best partner I ever had. We used to do bits and cut-up on air like we owned the station or something. We never worried about how long we were going, we were never in the same room (or most times even in the same building), we never fought over who got the last word and we NEVER rehearsed or planned anything out. I knew if I made Cecil laugh (or he me), that we were having the same effect on our listeners. Our stopsets used to drive management and consultants crazy, but the audience didn't seem to mind. At least the ratings were good. Our PD at Oldies 94.5 (R.C. Rogers) actually had to defend us on more than one occasion to upper management. Something to the effect of "You don't like 'em....don't listen to 'em. They're WINNING!" Gotta love that.

I listen to our old airchecks every once in a while and laugh my butt off. He's in D/FW now, and we still talk occasionally. I miss him very much.

Oh and we would consider getting back together to do Mornings someplace if the offer was right. Yeah, like that's gonna happen! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Oh well it WAS magic.
