Dick Van Dyke Show
Honeymooners
Startrek (original series from 1966)
Huntley/Brinkley Report
Bonanza
Medic (from 1950's with Richard Boone)
Mr. Lucky
Sgt. Preston of the Yukon
Lone Ranger

Another good theme song was "The Rookies".

Now that you brought up The Rookies, I feel compelled to nominate the theme from SWAT - which actually charted back in the late 70s. I still remember that theme - definitely a classic.

Wasn't SWAT a spinoff of The Rookies? Seems like they were related. Both were good shows.

Of course my true favorites have already been mentioned many times above, but SWAT and The Rookies had great themes, as did Kojak and Starsky and Hutch.

Few shows now have good themes - by design. In the interest of cramming more loud and poorly done ads into a half-hour, most creators have maybe 15 seconds for a theme song. And, at the end, the closing theme is only for the eventual owners of the DVD because the networks step all over it, scrunch it into a corner, talk over it and run a promo over it. Terrible.

And to think, I used to get steamed when the announcer would cut into a closing theme for 10 seconds back in the late 70s. Now you can't even see the credits....

What about when TV shows went into the first scene of the show before even running the opening credits? This was done to great effect in shows like CHiPs, but in many other shows, stopping the action (often after a good 5-10 minutes! ::)) to suddenly go into the opening credits only served to ruin the continuity of the show. It often felt like the networks screwed up, and forgot to run the opening theme! (Based on what I have since read on this board, I now believe that is altogether possible!)

Running an opening scene of a show even before the credits should be a teaser only, and should NOT get too deep into the show before interrupting the flow of the show to run the credits! This was often even more disrupting to the show than a commercial break would be! At least when they go to commercial, they are usually at a "stopping point"! ::)

It's still done today on some shows, specifically "Rescue Me"

All That Glitters:
One morning the Lord, she woke up to say,
“I feel like I want to be creative today.”
So by virtue of the power I vested in Me,
I make the heaven, earth and the deep blue sea.
Sink swim fly walk fly creep and crawl.
Now I better make someone to name them all.
Yes a human was needed in the neighborhood,
So the Lord made woman and it was good.
She said, “The Garden of Eden is no place to be alone."
so
From the rib of the madam came Adam full grown.
Time went by this groom and bride
Followed the instructions and multiplied.
She hunt, he cooked, she worked, he played.
While she administered the government he crocheted.
She bore the males.
He wore the veil.
Her head was crowned.
His feet were bound.
He concubined and walked behind.
She was the pardon the expression, the mastermind.
So is it any wonder why the men complained,
When from the dawn of time it’s been a women’s domain.

Don't laugh, everytime I watch an episode of "Rescue Me" I tell my wife "Fontella Bass is on tonight". ;D

Theme from Love American Style-Cowsills
Love Boat Theme-Jack Jones(the actual "theme" version, not the alternate radio version).
Hart To Hart Theme..." 'cause when they met...it was MOY-DAH!" ;D
Knight Rider Theme-(liked it way before every station & it's brother used it as a traffic bed)...also liked
The Jetsons Theme(same as above)
Theme from Friday Night Videos...killer! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNQ2OWaJd2U

Even though it is kind of wimpy, I will vote for "Love Is All Around", the Paul Williams song from the Mary Tyler Moore show. However, if memory serves, a couple of seasons they removed the vocals completely and just ran the instrumental version! :'(

You're right the theme is wimpy, but the show was good.

A group called Husker Du did a serious rock and roll version of the MTM theme that was anything but wimpy:

Well the show wasn't meant for the punk rocker bunch, so the theme obveously wasn't gonna be cutting edge metal. ::)
I thought the "Who can turn the world on with her smile" was better than the "How will you make it on your own" version...either way the reverb was cranked on both!

Agree on that.
