This is tough because so many of the best stations have declined so much in recent years :(

Some have declined more than others however. For example, almost no one would claim WZAK was one of the best stations any more as it was in the 80s or 90s.

Until recently WVAZ and WDAS-FM were holding up pretty well but both have taken hits too syndication in the past few years. Both have probably declined less drastically than KMJM or WJLB in the mainstream urban realm.

So my current favorites would be:

Of all stations, WDAS-AM, WDIA, WWWS, WATV, KCOH, WMCS and WVOL

Of mainstream urbans, WBLK, WDKX and WVEE

Of urban ACs, KOKY, WVAZ, and WDAS-FM (with an asterik to note the latter two are not what they were even a few years ago)

K-104 may still be one of the best mainstream hip hop oriented urbans, however for those of who remember listening to Skip Murphy and Company over the internet almost 15 years ago or even Skip Cheatham's Playhouse with some of the crew still in place less than 5 years ago, the current morning team isn't quite up there but at least it is still a local show. In those days, the morning show made the station which was still far ahead of stations in most markets on the new music.

blazin 103 tallahasse fl is great station they mixshows on point i also like wowi outta va as well they mixshows on point to

URBAN
KMEL San Francisco
WVEE Atlanta
KTCX Beaumont, tx
WEMX Baton Rouge

URBAN AC
KMJQ Houston (they got better recently)
KBLX San Francisco
WRBV Macon (not too many urban acs play music at a higher pitch so that's interesting)
WHUR Washington

RHYTHMIC
WPGC Washington
KPEZ Austin (prev KQBT and KXBT)
KVEG Las Vegas
KBOS Fresno
KFBT Fresno

People call me completely crazy for my pick of stations. But hey.. only human right?

Urban:
KVSP - Oklahoma City. Despite broadcasting 63 miles west of the city, they play a good blend of hip hop and have a show dedicated to local artists trying to make it big.
KPRS - Kansas City.
WGCI - Chicago. XM Satellite radio has them, probably my favorite CC urban.
WHHL - Hazelwood/St. Louis.
KJMM - Tulsa (only because it's the only one I receive OTA)

Urban AC:
KMJQ - Houston. I kinda feel like they've creeped on me lately.
KMJK - Kansas City.
KRNB - Dallas/Ft. Worth. This one is a bit iffy to me.

Rhythmic:
KDGS - Wichita. !!!!!! Favorite Rhythmic. Hands down.
KKDA - Oklahoma City. They've watered down their playlist ALOT since Cumulus got ahold of them. Still like them though.
KYLD - San Francisco.

Mytown Media's KKOY - Chanute, KS used to be very Rhythmic sounding and I wish they still were.

It's hard for me to find "good" rhythmic stations. Can you even say that anymore?

Can I make a correction? I definitely do NOT know why I said KKDA Oklahoma City. That's definitely supposed to say KKWD.

Haven't heard much of V-103 in Chicago.

V103 is still a decent urban AC. But they were hands down once of the best stations in the country before Clear Channel watered them down. Their oldies (or as Chicago calls them "Dusties") were deep cuts that many stations didn't play, especially during Herb Kent's show.

Might I also suggest listening the Soul 106.3 in Chicago on Friday and Saturday nights. House mixes on Fridays and a Steppers Show on Saturday. Both are very well done! The Steppers Show is very entertaining. Both nights remind me of classic Chicago radio!

I AGREE SOUL 106 IS DOIN HOUSE MIXES ON SAT AND THEY ON POINT BUT ALSO CHECK OUT WKKC FRIDAY NITE AUDIO FRIDAYS NITES THEY PLAY SOME GREAT HOUSE MIXES THEY ALSO DO STEPPERS MIX ON SATURSDAY ITS BOUT TIME CHICAGO HOUSE BACK O CHICAGO RADIO V103 DO HOUSE MIX FRI NITES AT 12AM SO HOUSE MUSIC IS MAKIN COME BACK ON CHICAGO RADIO

This is an interesting thread. ;D ;D

I'm glad you think so despite it being the LAZIEST of board topics.

"Hey Urban board regulars, let's all shout out some random radio stations!" Accomplishes the same thing.

Do you have any ideas then?
