Best Voicetracking

We all know radio is not what it use to be. Very little "live" programming outside of AM Drive. Mostly satellite fed or voicetracked. Which stations do it well and which stations flip the switch and walk away without a care?

I've heard many voicetracked stations and think WTRY (whatever it is they are doing) has to be a very poor example :-[

I think ABC does a decent job with B95 and an even better job with Magic 590. I think it's sometimes hard to tell whether 590 is live or memorex. :)

Both WGY and WGDJ have too many issues with overlaping of audio....think it might be a timing issue ???

Your thoughts?
 
It's a sad state that most stuff is Voicetracked these days. Still, it's a fact of radio life now. I don't agree about WTRY...well, not completely anyway. I think WTRY does a great job during the week when there are local jocks on, but the weekend sounds horrible because it's clear those jocks are not local.

I wouldn't even put the AM stations in this category since their shows are syndicated and clearly no one is paying attention while they're on.

I liked how Julie Feiner sounded on Buzz, but unless she'll be doing weekends on Crush, she's gone from 105.7. For the most part, unless the jocks have been around for a long time since the inception of voicetracking and have learned how to hone those skills, I don't think it sounds very good. And the "fake" jocks always sound bad because you don't have to be a brain surgeon to know they're not local.
I keep hoping radio as it is today with collapse onto itself and have to go back to live jocks all the time, but I know that's just a fantasy. One can hope though.
 
Are FLY and Jamz still live 24/7? I'm almost expecting B95 or the River to pick up Julie Feiner, unless she'll be with Crush on the weekends...

With Kiss FM picking up D. Scott for afternoons, I'm expecting the station to climb back up in the ratings and inch closer to Jamz. AFAIK, wasn't this station completely voicetracked/satellite-fed after DJ Thomas left? I barely listened until recently...

I guess you haven't listened to WTRY lately. There are no live announcers past 9:00AM.

Yes, I'm aware there are no live announcers...the whole point of this thread is voicetracking. WTRY is good during the week, awful on the weekends.. As I said before, voicetracking sounds good when the people are local and have been trained in how to do it. It's clear by listening to many different stations, that voicetracking is not as easy as some people may think it is.

Voicetracking is another form of performance. Just as actors must learn to perform on stage in a theater environment, for a television screen or for a movie screen, radio "voice actors" need to learn how to perform in a live on-air situation or voicetracking. Unfortunately, a culture has arisen in which most companies don't value the skill it takes to create compelling on-air content when voicetracking and rather than compensating a talent for putting in the effort to create a show they compensate on a part-time hourly basis. One local company pays part-time on-air talent for two hours when they voicetrack a show whether it's a 3, 4 or 6 hour show. That sends the wrong message. A lot of talent also seem to take pride in how quickly they can voicetrack rather than in how effective are the results of that effort.
 
when i was dj'ing i LOVED voice tracking!! it brought another new challenge. i remember my own mother telling me (when she knew i was working my 'real' job'), coming off the the toh song, and me saying its 3 minutes past the hour .... she asked "how did you know what time it is????" the ART of voicetracking is not all that difficult. and, even when i was at my "real" job, i had guys come up to me and say ... "hey! arent you on the radio today?" i'd be like ... oh yeah!

voicetracking IS a talent and an art. just like anything else .. it can be mastered!!
