Best way in to the big leagues

I've been in a small market station for 10 years. What is the best way to move up. I have sent my resume and packages into a lot of medium and large market stations and haven't got a response. They say no phone calls, so my only other option I would think would be to walk in the double doors of the stations.

HELP!!

Find a "Small market" station that leaks into the larger market you'd like to work in.
This may help you on your way to the larger market station.

Just reach out. What do you do? Is it where you'd like to grow? Note the bigger cities around you. Can you get influence from more major-league players that will up your game?

Plan on more debt-paying part time stuff no matter what heppens. Be the best, most-liked cheerleader for your station. Be the champion of the building. Take that same positive attitude everywhere-- even though you may be miserable. Even people you just "happen to meet" (corporate-types, consultants) are more likely to think of ya if you're charismatic.

Contact me w/a "personal message" on this board. Let's talk about some more detailed strategy. Cause, the BEST way to grow talent is for people to share experience.

Later!

what would be a small market radio station around nashville, becuase i would say that would leak into a larger market...if i'm understanding you correctly.

Network, network, network!!

In the large markets by FAR your best bet is to know people. Talk to lots of people. Subscribe to mailing lists. Join jock web forums. Get your name out there!

And, as it has been said, don't give up! I knew a guy who tried for almost a year for a shot at a station in Chicago. He would send package after package. Finally he personally delivered a pizza to the programming staff with his resume on the top. The PD gave him a shot.

He did weekends and overnights for a few years, but slowly moved up the ladder. He's now doing afternoons at that station. PD's appreciate persistence...it shows dedication. Just don't get creepy about it.

It's all about people. Has anybody else from the station you work at moved up? Are you still in touch with them? People bring along others that they know and like.

Secondly, get a part time gig in a larger market. Yeah, you'll be working 7 days a week for a while, but your larger-market experience will make you better in the small market - which pays the bills - and your small-market experience should help you grow faster in the larger market. With luck, you'll make a name in the larger market, and more opportunities should open up.
