Best & Worst of 2007

Just trying to start a conversation here...what was the best & worst of Central PA radio in 2007? My vote for the worst: the loss of our radio buddy Jeff Kauffman. A talent gone way before his time. My vote for the best: Smooth Jazz 92.7 and thier success/survival. But its only my opinion, I could be wrong.

I would concur on Jeff Kauffman. That was a tragic loss. Perhaps amazing best describes the fact that Smooth Jazz is still on the air. Not knocking the product or talent..it's very good. Hall must be happy with the bread it's bringing in.

In the corporate environment we live in, it's very difficult to use the word "best" in talking about any radio in general.

Ok Karlyle, although I'm still waiting for you to answer "which morning shows sound like they were just slapped together without any thought given to chemistry", because I think it would be a great topic...I'll applaud you for starting some form of conversation on what is normally a dead, sleepy board.......Thank you....now hopefully you'll get some response.

Best: I agree with Smooth Jazz (because I love that station when I'm pissed, it calms me down), RED 102.3 (my opinion: is one the best sounding stations in the market, too bad the signal sucks), WSOX (always good to tune in for a sing along...just don't stay too long or songs start repeating).

Worst: Not only the the death of Jammer but also Lyndie from the X. Two people whom went too soon. Also, and not because it's anwhere in the same category, but that Kelly from WARM is not only irritating and smug sounding on the radio but God help me if I ever have to see her homely face plastered on a billboard campaign again.

The passing of Jammer, Lyndie and Doug Patton are definitely the worst for me.

Since the glass is always half empty with me anyway, I can't think about what the "best" would be.

It was a great topic karlyle......over 250 looks and only 3 reponses(!?)

Maybe everyone's hands are too cold to type or perhaps in a strange twist of oddity, the only visitors to this thread were finger amputee's that really want to respond but are unable. "My stumps prevent my opinionated articulation! Damn you stumps!"

How frustrating, oh well, back to sleep.

Well, perhaps there was no "best" and no "worst"...did our market stay "status quo"?? Other than the passing of some of our radio bretheren??

Well, when a new (or newer) radio station becomes very, very popular in its marketplace, that should still qualify for consideration as a "best" performance, shouldn't it?

And though this particular board is focused mostly on Harrisburg, York & Lancaster, the lovely borough of Mercersburg is, indeed, physically located in Central Pennsylvania--as is half the Hagerstown-Chambersburg-Waynesboro Arbitron market.

All as a lead-in to Mercersburg's Country Legends 92.1, which stormed into the Top 3 this past spring and doesn't show any signs of slowing down anytime soon. With a 3-kw Class A.

Damn good performance: the Best of 2007, hands down.

Is that the best Cumulus Radio can do is put Kelly on a billboard? Please spare me! Her face on any billboard would cause a multi car pile-up on route 30.

I almost forgot. What has happened to WSBA-AM 910? This station has almost fallen off the ratings charts. Why are some of the people at this facility still on the air? The programming is stale and canned.

Best - Quality morning teams being brought back together (Mitchell & Michelle, Ed & Amy).

Worst - As others have mentioned, the terrible losses to our Central PA radio family.

Honorable Mention for Worst - The great Citadel revolving door of talent & employees

Best: addition of 88.7 to the XPN radio family
Worst: loss of the 1580 station (surrender of any license is a loss)

You only now noticed? Perhaps the programming staff will someday realize that ripping off KYW's phrase "The News Watch Never Stops" does not miraculously transform a wholly unremarkable talk station into (insert Les Nessman intro reverb here) A News Authority. It doesn't help that York is not exactly a hotbed of breaking news.

But WSBA's problem begins and ends with programming and creativity. There is not an iota of attention paid to production value, and just take a gander at the lineup.

Dave Ramsey appears twice on Saturday and twice on Sunday, in addition to one hour weekdays. I certainly was not conducting any focus group research on behalf of WSBA, but I'm fairly certain that the York area was not banging down the doors of the radio station, demanding more Dave Ramsey.

And right around the time Cumulus took over Susquehanna, WSBA decided to take on not one, not two, but THREE hosts already carried by the far superior WHP-AM (Michael Savage, Kim Komando, Rusty Humphries).

The web page featuring WSBA's Saturday lineup is hilarious in the way the hosts are described.

Doug Stephan evidently boasts the week's "hottest" talk topics, while American Weekend Live provides us with the "hottest" topics presented by the nation's top talk hosts, to be followed by The Money Pit, which is nothing less than America's "hottest" home improvement show.

Never before has a station so allegedly "hot" sounded so lifeless and cold.

But they do have snappy blue staff shirts.

But, you forgot The Gary Sutton Show!
