Best & Worst Seattle Morning Shows

I'm trying to figure out a little bit about Seattle's Morning Shows.
I'm not from Seattle. Actually ... I'm out here on the east coast.
If there were to be a NEW morning show in Seattle ...
What would the people of Seattle want?
What's there that's already good?
What sucks?
What are your ideas when it comes to ... what is missing?
I look forward to reading your suggestions.
Man Hugs,
Snuffy

This is a gross generalization, but I'd say the most successful morning shows in Seattle are those with personalities that sound like people you know rather than professional jocks. Prime examples are T-Man (KUBE), Bob Rivers (KZOK) and BJ Shea (KISW), none of whom sound like they went to broadcasting school but know how to relate to their audience. Shows that sound like they could be on in any market in the country usually seem to be the ones that fail. Good luck on getting the gig ;)

Take 2 --
All quiet on the western front?

Come on, this board has been entirely too quiet for the couple of days. Wazzup?

Oh forget it. My ADD is showing. Kinda scattered thinking 'bout all this. You know what I mean. ;)

Snuff,

You'll never get the answer reading this board from the East coast. Get out here and get to know the city, it's rhythm and people. Relate, relate, relate. Then you'll be on the right path.

You won't find your answer in writing, you'll find it in your own eyes and ears by living it, and knowing how to relate that life on-air in an entertaining manner (and get in the calls, dial position and promo tease the next bit following the stop set!)

Seattle has mid-level talent and morning shows at best in my humble opinion. Here is my analysis albeit based on listening the last three months and a recent perceptual study. The following five would be my vote for top morning shows based on a series of criteria including: outperforming the stations AQH on a four-book, fit for the format, mechanics, heritage and creativity: KCMS, KIRO, KZOK, KISW and KPLZ. Here is the broader analysis:

KCMS: The show wins on fit, mechanics, creativity and has some heritage. Weakness is outperforming station, which it does not do on a four-book. Still strong in the genre.
KIRO-AM: The morning news show has vastly improved its mechanics and creativity in the last month or so. It has heritage and overperforms the station. This is a change from Summer and this shows that coaching can create change provided hosts will listen. Much improved. Soundly beats KOMO mornings in recent trends in key demos.
KZOK: The show wins on fit, heritage and out-performing the station by a significant number. The show fails a great deal on mechanics and creativity. They seem to wander at times and lack focus. The show fails to attract the blue collar core of this format which is a weakness exposed by KISW.
KISW: The show wins on fit, mechanics and out-performs the station. It lacks heritage, focus and creativity. I hear the same approach to topics on shows in other markets. Not unique. Host can be irritating.
KPLZ: The show wins on fit, excellent mechanics, heritage and out-performs the station. The issue I have with this show is that it relies on benchmarks it did years ago. I grade it down on creativity. Host appeal is strong among women and gays, (especially the one host), but lacks male appeal. Females on show should be toned down, they are irritating to core audience.
KMPS: The show wins on fit, heritage and out-performs the station. It loses big on creativity and mechanics. The host is friendly, but not interesting and wanders quite a bit.
KOMO-AM; The show wins on fit, mechanics, over-performing station. Needs more creativity and energy to beat KIRO's improved morning product.
KUBE: The show has heritage, good mechanics and creative. It is a tough fit and probably belongs elsewhere. It also barely performs at station AQH. Host's voice can be irritating to women, which is a core audience for this format. National show hurts local appeal. Show is not doing well in other markets. Females on show weak.
KWFF: This is a plug and play show. It lacks heritage, barely performs at station average and lacks creativity, using retread 90's morning show bits. Very much a 'DJ' approach rather than conversation. Male host is deejay like, female is just plain irritating.
KBSG: This show wins on fit and mechanics. It performs at station level for ratings and modest creativity. Host has heritage, but not in mornings, much like KISW.
MOVIN: The show fails at every level, except fit. This is just one level better than automation, but that DOES fit this weak format niche. The show lacks heritage, mechanics, creativity and grossly underperforms the station.
KBKS: This show currently fails at every level. In its current form it is a poor fit, lacks heritage, creativity, mechanic are very poor and it barely performs at station AQH, which is among the worst in the market. Male host is very weak, so is the ensemble. Female host shines.
KRWM: This show fails at every level except mechanics. The show grossly underperforms the station, lacks creativity, heritage and focus. It is time and temp and nothing more.
JACK/KJR: N/A
KING-FM: The show has heritage and is a good fit. It fails on mechanics, creativity and ratings performance.
KMTT: Show lacks heritage, under-performs the station, moderate mechanics and lacks creativity.
KNDD: National show that is weak.
KVI/KTTH: Have not spent much time with these stations to provide a significant or valuable critique.

So what is Seattle missing?

1. CHR powerhouse morning show. If someone came into this market and launched a Mainstream CHR with a music intensive, high energy morning show they would win.
2. AAA/Modern morning show. This show belongs on KNDD or KMTT. High profile, edgy modern leaning show. There are none in this market. Would eat into KZOK, KISW, KPLZ and the AM news stations. A very big hole in this market.
3. AC Powerhouse. My feeling is that the Kent and Alan show belongs on KRWM. They would be a perfect fit at their age on this station. An AC Powerhouse show would improve KRWM and eat in to the Country stations and KPLZ.
4. NewTalk Morning Powerhouse host. Many markets have an AM host with market history and personality. AM shows seem devoid of personalities. This can be a political figure (Curtis Sliwa), local celebrity or established morning host.

Again, this is just my opinion based on listening in the market since August, some familiarity as a consultant in this market in years past and recent perceptual analysis, only some of which I can reveal on this open board.

Thanks, Prof. Now, please if you would, tell us who might foot the bill for those shows...if you know of any willing bodies.

Great analysis RadioProf

Kiro changes made this summer are good, but have everything to do with the clock and very little to do with "coaching." Agreed though they're stronger than Komo. And since we're talking Fisher, I also agree the women on KPLZ are naggy haggy and should shut up. In the country category, Kmps needs to shut up in the morning too. Icky (and I know there are many that will defend him) has lost it. He wanders through the show and those around him pander to him. The wolf just doesn't have the balls to pull off a great show, try as they might, they're lightweights. KISS is also in need of a new morning show. Why does CBS keep J & B?

The morning shows in Seattle need help. Portland, SF and LA all have much better talent in every format. ya ya bad for the Seattle market. I agree ichabod is out of touch as are rivers, kent and alan and Tman is a mismatch for KUBE. the remaining shows aren't even worth mentioning excpet maybe KCMS. Monti should move to mornigns on MOVIN, Marcus D on KBKS, Kurt and corine on kplz (the one girlfriend on star who sounds normal) and eric powers on KUBE. Mary should go it alone over at the wolf and Jackie should dump bender and move over to JACK. Now you would have morning hosts that work with music, that talk to their audinece not at them.

Well, Professor, you left at least one station out. Which is very telling as to the impact it is making currently. KJR, FM. All music mornings. It would sound 110% better with Robin & Maynard on board. There really is some amazing talent in Seattle, but most of them are not on-air right now. Crowded out by greedy PD's looking for the cheaper approach. Such as all-music mornings. Can you say "Pat Cashman"? Sheer talent. Mike West? Talent. Robin & Maynard? Talent. Now, none of these are appealing to everyone, I understand, but a lot of us out here would drop our current morning listening habits in a heartbeat for one of these.

Glad to know there are still R&M fans out there. I participated in their golf tournament and if anyone thinks they do not have listeners, they are sadly mistaken. The place was packed and many people were not even golfing, they simply came because they are loyal fans and wanted to show their support.

Maybe we need to get a "Robin and Maynard Back on the Air Campaign" started?

I wanted to go to the tournament, but couldn't make it. The pictures on their website look like everyone had a lot of fun. Even Peterson looked happy. ;)

They have listeners, or they have fans? If they have listeners, where are they listening? I worked with John & Robin for years, and back in the day they were good, but I think the fact they are not on anywhere is a reflection that their time is over. Robin burned some bridges with the lawsuit. They burned some bridges with low ratings.

If you think I'm wrong in either case (lawsuit or ratings) then why are they not on the air?

:-\

Not sure why they are not on the air, heck it could be their choice. After 20 years of corporate bull, maybe they both just got sick and tired of it. I am sure they don't need the money.

And I don't disagree that the lawsuit could have caused some friction. It is sad to me to think they are done. You know, they were GREAT everywhere they landed, yet they are only remembered for their last stint on the Buzz. Throw in the BJ situation and really crappy management and you get what they call a FLIP which is exactly what happened. Personally, I think they were held back by Entercom, it tunred into a bad situation and that was that. The station did not flip simply because of their show.

Regardless, a staple in Seattle radio deserves a second chance and I hope to be able to be a part of that regardless of where they may or may not show up at.

I rarely listen to radio any longer unless it is AM talk. that is it.

Too bad all of the supposed fans, er...listeners didn't translate to ratings success and thus great revenues (in the last go around)...

Maybe someone can start a campaign to get Robin and Maynard, Pat Cashman, and Andy Savage back on the air. In between pointless, self indulgent, long winded breaks, and the unfilled spot sets, you could play just the songs that people call in and request!

I think all of these shows had alot of fans, it was just other circumstances that caused their demise. Obviously the lawsuit with Entercom didn't help Robin & Maynard, but I don't think their show was meant to cater to the type of demo the Buzz was aimed at. Doesn't mean that right now they couldn't be extremely sucessful on a station like KZOK or KJR. As far as Andy Savage is concerned, he took a chance for more cash and left a heritage station for one that people were just hearing about. A lack of advertising and impatient management who gets word of the "next big format", and he's history. Just like Robin & Maynard, if given the chance, I'm sure he could be sucessful in this market again. Pat Cashman is getting up there in age and has had many stops on the dial here in Seattle so I don't know if he is worth the chance for a PD that might be looking to make some changes.

I agree. I was very surprised that R&M went to the Buzz. Before they went there, I never listened to the station. Personally, I really liked their last incarnation on KZOK in the afternoons. Mainly because I could listen to them their whole shift. I don't get up at 6, so I would miss that part of the show. Of course now there are podcasts, so it's not as big of a deal.

I find it amusing that people on this Board call current morning hosts Bob Rivers, Ichabod Caine and Kent and Alan, old and washed up. Yet in the same breath want shows that have clearly been off the air for some time and in some cases are older than the three above. I find it a common practice in our business to root for successful people to fail, yet once they leave, remember them fondly. It is not just a Seattle thing. Rick Dees was universally trashed among radio folk in LA, yet when he left, they missed him. He then returned, but no one remembered or cared to listen. Radio needs to respect those who have heritage, learn from their success and build on their failures. The radio business will flourish if new talent respects those who have gone before them and then improves upon the successes. In science, each new scientist builds on the work of another and learns from the mistakes. In radio we should do the same. For me it was Larry Lujack, Cousin B, Wolfman Jack, The Real Don Steele, Don Rose, and of course the great KHJ and 10-Q lineups that formed the basis for my work in programming and consulting. The next round of talent took the best of these and built upon it. keeping the excitement, but shedding the Boss Jock approach for humor and bits. Rick Dees, Scott Shannon and the Morning Zoos were a new breed, then came the "real life talent" that were story tellers like Howard Stern, Mark and Brian, Kidd Kraddick and Matty. Their time is beginning to pass as they begin to retire. How will the new breed of morning shows improve and change on the past? In Seattle, I don't see it. KBKS, KKWF are poor takeoffs of the 80's/90's style. KISW and KUBE shows are still the Stern mold. The new shows are alive in urban radio, integrating music and mornings. Yet they still tell stories and have fun. That, my friends, is the future. I just hope I get to see the next breed of talent in Seattle before we bury the old ones.
