Best/worst signals

I know this is a slow time for posting, but I have a few stories to tell. I went to Kingstree yesterday, and I was testing some of the AM and FM signals. I have a Pontiac Vibe, and it has one of the best AM radios of any car. It can get stations very well in the deep fringe.

Even in Kingstree, I was getting most of the AMs out of Charleston, including 1450.

Worst in the area: 94.1 out of Kingstree. It simulcasts 105.5, and the signal is so hamstrung by 94.3 out of Charleston and Savannah's 94.1 that it barely goes 25 miles out. It was hard to hear in Moncks Corner, 40 miles away. No wonder it is stuck simulcasting a Florence station. It is so poor that I've heard it but one time in DX on James Island.

All of the big Charleston FMs were strong, along with many Myrtle Beach and several Columbias, including WCOS, which is almost ubiquitous. When they made that move from 97.9 to 97.5, it was genius. I've been in almost every part of the state and have heard them. Heck, I've heard them at North Myrtle.

The 99.3 translator in West Ashley for WSPO has a great signal. It took till the north end of Goose Creek before it got interference. It still was in almost to Moncks Corner when WWKT began to win out. Very good signal. I haven't tried it to the north yet.

What are your best and worst AM and FM signals?

In Laurens county, in the middle of nowhere below Simpsonville (I am literally on top of the WROQ and WSSL transmitters) I can get all of the FM's well except for 103.3 who has terrible spacing issues. They are a struggle once you hit Laurens Co. because of WZSN and WRIX...I nominate them as the worst GSP signal for the power. 106.3 can have some slight background static at times around here. I can get WKSF from Asheville very well, in addition to WCOS. AM is tough here.

The translator for WLFJ-AM at 92.9 is very strong also. They make it to Fountain Inn. The translator at 94.9 for WFIS is strong also, it gets out. WROO at 96.7 is impressive for a class A. That signal has some punch to the south compared to the other class A's in the area (103s), puts up a good fight headed down 26 towards Newberry until WLTY wins over.

I was on North Pleasantburg near Rutherford Rd in Greenville a while back and the 102.5 signal is HORRIBLE there! It must be a bad hole - incredible static and the signal is almost unlisteable. I thought they were off the air, but noticed it again another day.

The farthest Greenville/Spartanburg signals I have gotten are 92.5 and 98.9, with 98.9 having an edge. Have gotten them in Augusta and past Columbia.

WEGX Eagle 92.9 - I don't know about to the south, but that station booms northward. Especially during DX periods.

92.9 use to sound stronger down here years back but don't know what they changed. I am glad they did now that we have our signal on 92.9 with the LPFM althou they still give us trouble sometimes.

Some of the stations in Savannah and Jacksonville have huge signals. I was listening to 102.1 today around Charleston, and it comes in probably at least half the time here.

The best Charleston signal is probably 96.9. I've heard that signal out into NC on I-95. Nearly every area east of I-95 in SC can get at least one of them, 101.7, 102.5, or 95.1. They go down to Brunswick, GA on a good day, and can be heard well all the way. I've heard several of them in Lumberton mornings.

The worst is probably 100.5. It barely gets to 190 on I-26 before Orangeburg's 100.3 starts interfering.

100.5 came on the air well after 100.3 in Orangeburg and had to get a short space agreement with 100.3 (I believe there was some money involved) along with protecting 100.3's signal west of Summerville. 96.9 comes onto Santee most days but fades in and out part of the time, Elloree is about half the time. This is good for me since we (WLRE) play country music for this area.

Comes in like a local around Myrtle Beach and even when I head south to Pawley's Island. Not really sure how far it goes after that, I know you can pick it up in Georgetown, SC also.

Doesn't 96.9 The Kat out of Charlotte, NC kill out 96.9 The Wolf by then in NC on 95? Also both stations play country.

I was getting a weak WEGX on the east side of Columbia today by Dreher High School. Charleston stations skip very well into Columbia when there's any skip. 103.5 was coming in well today, along with 101.7. I also heard a weak 102.5 and even Fun 98.9 was mixing in.

The AM is really good on that car. For example, I was getting 1150 from Rock Hill down there, along with several other AMs that are usually hard pressed to hear there.

When I heard 96.9, they were still AC. 96.9 does have a huge signal still. 92.5 going to country has made it hard to distinguish them and WESC around the Columbia area.

I have not had the chance to listen to WEGX, but I am thinking before I left SC their signal was a tad weaker then it use to be... I remember when 92.9 went up on the big stick... I just remember around 85ish or 86ish they flipped to a Lite Rock format very simular to what WSCQ in Columbia was running at the time infact I always remember the two stations always being within a song or 2 of each other so they must have used the same music service at the time... I just remember them talking how they could be heard from the Capital to the sea. When they resurfaced Labor Day weekend of 91 as Rock their signal was a tad weaker, but Dr Doug who was doing the CE work had the audio loud and compressed as he could get it which gave the signal a bigger sound till the station went dark again in 93... When it came back as country in April of 94 the signal although strong just did not have quite the same umph it had... Not sure if it was Hugo that might had caused some damage, but that was my memory on WEGX... CC1

WEGX still has a reasonably powerful signal, at least north/south...was coming from VA today down 95 when I first heard it around MM 98...and by MM 80 it was fairly solid. 10 more miles and it was static free. Nice to have a city grade (or close to) signal in three metros....

92.9 was playing "Shout" by Tears for Fears around '89, whatever year it was theat Florence's easy listening station went country. Although I liked the country music, there wasn't anything worth hearing around Florence at that time that I knew of which was pop.

Chimp me and you must have listened to a lot of the same stations... If I could have remembered school work as well as I did radio I would have been freakin' awesome... I just know around the fall of 89 there was Hugo and that really changed the landscape of radio for me and I knew that was what I wanted to be a part of... CC1

Yes it did. One of the powerful Charlotte signals is 101.9. That signal often blasts in as far S as Columbia, and comes in often in the Charleston area even with 101.7 right next to it. 107.9 also has a big signal since there's little around it in the Upstate of SC and even in the Midlands.

Im surprised your not picking up WIKS instead on 101.9 in Charleston. As thats what usually comes in on 101.9 around Myrtle Beach.
