BET -vs- TVOne

I know these are the 2 main outlets for African American entertainment on tv, but the competiton is on! Both networks are adding more shows like crazy. BET has lift up on a lot of the music programs so now they are down to only 2 music programs, 106 & Park and The Deal. They've also been airing some of MTV's reality shows like 50 Cent's Money and Power, as well as Run's House. BET has also added One on One, Family Matters and Proud Family. Over at TVOne, they added Sanford & Son, Living Single, The Jeffersons and Half&Half. Both station are currently running marathons of various shows like crazy.

I'm an Afro-American, and this may be a shock to hear: I have never been a big BET viewer. Never really cared for the channel, even less so since Robert Johnson sold out to Viacom, which officially made BET into the "Black MTV". I just personally didn't care to watch hours of music videos every day back then, and today I don't care to watch hours of music videos, insipid reality shows, and overrun episodes of (mostly unfunny) Black sitcoms that I've seen a hundred times already. But that's the Viacom way.

I've always seen TV One as the more mature of the two channels, as what BET could have and should have been. I haven't watched as much recently, perhaps because they no longer run the classic reruns of It's Showtime at the Apollo, and I'm tired of the endless reruns of Martin (funny in moderation, and in the first 2 1/2 seasons) and Living Single (hated it then, hate it now), but they'll get me when they run the Roots miniseries or some blaxploitation flick from the '70s.

TV One is the real Black entertainment television. Now, if they could cut a deal for Soul Train reruns...

I think TVOne's M.O. has included catering toward adults since day one, and they've done a pretty fair job at it. Nabbing the rights to reruns of Soul Train would be a huge get, but there are probably copyright issues to consider. That's why you've only seen a backdoor presence of the show on digital portals like YouTube, and practically no Soul Train DVD releases (at least, any that have been legally produced).

I'm black myself, and of the two, I tend to watch TV One more often. If there's something interesting on BET that I might want to watch, I'll tune in, but that's pretty rare nowadays. The only BET show I do like is the American Gangster documentary series, narrated by Ving Rhames. Everything else is there...meh. TV One does tend to overshow several of their sitcoms (and I'm with Rollo about the endless Martin reruns...I've loved the first three seasons, but I've kinda stopped watch them now). TV One also premiered over Thanksgiving weekend a new Behind the Music-esque show called Unsung, and I think it's pretty good...the ones I've seen were about the DeBarge family and Phyllis Hyman.

As far as the Soul Train reruns, let's forget that ownership of the franchise recently changed hands, and for the right deal, the new owners might are probably willing to re-run the shows.

I just wonder why KTU thinks that both BET and TV One are wastes of TV space. I can understand somewhat BET being unwatchable at times (most of the time for me anyway), but why TV One?
