I was in the Cherry Hill mall today, and was by the old Strawbridges, now its a ton of new stores, they just renovated the entire mall and S. is gone.....as I strolled by where the old Strawbridges was, I remembered a Tuesday evening, in the middle of January 1963 ( I was 10), and seeing Chuck Dorherty(sp) in a glass booth broadcasting live on WIP, it was around 8pm or so...and the song that he was playing was Magic Star by Margie Singleton the Telstar version with her singing lyrics....now does anyone remember or can beat this....hmmmmmmmmm

Magic Star" was a cover song by Margie Singleton, then married to Shelby Singleton and was released by Mercury Records in January 1963. The "B" side was "Only Your Shadow Knows".

Even Chuck Dougherty could save this song. It didn't chart at all and was not Margie's finest effort. She, as a country singer, did, however, debut on the Grand Ol' Opry in 1963, and would later remarry after divorcing Shelby, and become a decent and popular songwriter ("Keeping Up With The Joneses") and a backup singer with the famed Jordanaires, appearing on hits by several well known country starts of the 60s until 1968.

wow thanks ;D i don't feel so old anymore ....then again I WAS subjected to Romper Room and Captain Kangaroo....aw man nevermind....on a serious note by the time I was old enough to pay attention there were really no 'classics' left...everything was becoming mass produced and homogenized.

Thanks for the great info, the funny thing is when I heard the song I loved it, never heard the instrumental version, so I thought that was the only version of the song. I went out and bought it at Petrellas Records in South Philly on Snyder Avenue, Nick could of found any record and he had it, if not he would of ordered it. It was on Mercury with a black label I think....who was the PD of WIP at the time and why did he decide to play that version, I never heard the Toronados version on WIP....

Wasn't "Romper Room" itself homogenized across the country?
