Month 2 of the Winter numbers were released today. WZZK moves into the #2 spot, displacing long-time #2 WBHJ. WJOX continues to do well, too, on the new and improved 94.5 signal, moving into the #4 slot. WYDE is still struggling with the return of"The Source", dropping down to a 0.6 from the previous month's 1.0. In fact, WAYE (AM 1220) came out ahead of the combined share of WYDE-AM and FM. :eek:

Here is my solution for Crawford Broadcasting regarding WYDE-FM:

Based on the large number of African-Americans who live in Birmingham, I think 101.1 should become a black gospel station. I believe if they make this move, the ratings of the radio should go up dramatically in Birmingham and take a big dent out of WAGG-AM's ratings. Almost three years ago, Clear Channel had a FM gospel station, which was known as "Hallelujah 105.5". They changed the format to rock after Citadel changed their rock station to sports talk WJOX, which was previously on AM 690. Before the flip, the gospel station was one of the top rated stations in Birmingham. Since WYDE-FM has a monster 100,000 watt signal that covers both the Birmingham and Huntsville market, I think it has the potential to be even more successful than Hallelujah was. Finally, Crawford Broadcasting is primarily a religious broadcaster with a few secular stations in Chicago but they own black gospel stations in Chicago, St. Louis, and Detroit. I look forward to hearing your feedback regarding this idea.
 
How long has "Imus in the Morning" been on 690 WSPZ? I sort of figured Citadel would plug the show in somewhere ('SPZ or 'API 1070) but I missed any acknowledgment of them doing so on the Alabama board.
 
Otharadioman, I agree with your assessment of a better format for 101.1. However, I must remind you that Crawford's 1260 AM was once Black Gospel. But the mix of a Black and White gospel formats did not work. They dumped the programming which was a combination of music and block programming of ministries. Rumor has it, the WDJC-FM crowd was uncomfortable with having to interface with the Black station's staff and clientele. If they go that route of programming 101.1balck gospel, then they must separate facilities in order for it to work. I believe that they would have instant success with a Hallelujah Gospel similar to what was on 105.5 . Keep in mind that Cox radio has it stations separated by race. WBHK 98.7, WBHJ 95.7, WAGG 610 AM and WENN 1320 AM are co-located in the same facility while WNCB 97.3, WZZK 104.7 are in seperate locations.
 
WJLD AM 1400 just made a significant jump in the Birmingham Winter Arbitrends. WJLD went from 1.1 to 1.8. It was significant for two reasons. First, they along with WAGG 610 were the only AM stations that made an increase. Second, I wonder can the increase be attributed to WJLD's new FM signal on translator W281AB 104.1. I noticed that since they put their antenna on Red Mountain at 623 feet above ground with 125 watts, they cover all of Jefferson And Shelby counties. In fact I heard them as far as Jemison going south.
 
I was under the impression WJLD's better ratings was because they turned off the HD buzzsaw. :D

Does WYDE have a good enough signal in the city to pull off gospel music? I know it's challenged over Red Mountain where the so-called money is, but what about in Birmingham itself?
 
I noticed the bull has slipped some. Their share was a 3.6, compared to WZZK's 7.6. Also, How much longer does Cox plan to keep WNCB New Country 97.3? I believe they came in 12th, and It doesn't seem like they have much of an impact.

Does anyone know what 97.3's ratings were when they were oldies as WODL?

Yeah, usually WNCB is at the bottom of the heap. But in the past few books, they've actually been ahead of WYDE. I always say Cox oughta trash that new country format too, but most of the folks on the board here think Cox is hanging around with the "new country" format, because, even though the ratings are bad, it's on "the cheap" and that's why Cox keeps it that way. If they ever do switch formats on WNCB, they better leave Rick and Bubba on there or my wife will be distraught she won't be able to hear the Rick and Bubba replay thingy....whatever name they call that R&B rebroadcast on WNCB.

Probably about the same as they are now, at least the 12+ numbers, anyhow. I was thinking the ratings were so low back then due to WODL being a class A (as opposed to a C2 as it is now). I think, though, Cox had at least converted WODL to a C2 by the time the station went to the short-lived 70's oldies format. I thought maybe an option for Cox would have been to move WAGG to 97.3 after Clear Channel yanked the "Hallelujah" format off of WENN. What do I know though? I'm just a non-radio guy making my "maybe-not-so-astute" observations. ;)

I have also given thought to the idea of WAGG (AM 610) moving to 97.3 FM. I also think that it would be a good move and relatively inexpensive to do.

Since they're already doing the format it shouldn't cost anything extra at all. I too think WAGG to FM would be a great idea. Didn't WAGG still manage beat Hallalujah when it was on?
