As of this moment, 10 and 12 are live on TV. Where is 6. Once again, this is Rhode Island, and it's a big story. Not a good reason to "give you a week." I don't "see the difference." Actually, I'm upset that 6 is failing at the easiest time to live up to their promise.

Obviously you are not a fan of ABC 6, but I don't think you understand the "give us a week" philosophy. I'm sure ABC 6 has realized that they are not able to compete with 10 and 12 when it comes to breaking news. They simpily do not have the resources. As a result they do not air a traditional local newscast with lots of crime/breaking news live shots. They focus on more in-depth stories and reports that the other station don't carry. Over the past few weeks they have aired stories on illiteracy and the real estate market. The "give us a week" philosophy is looking for Rhode Islanders to give a different newscast a shot. I'm not sure which newscast is better, they both have their positives and negatives. But give ABC 6 for trying something different.

Unfortunatly, WLNE could probably throw a "test-pattern" at 6PM and get about as many viewers as they do now.Channel six has always been a perenneal "also-ran." Their focus ought to be more toward Cape Cod and the Islands. Tough to compete with the big-dogswhen you don't have any "Alpo."Where is it written that channel 6 even HAS to do a newscast? Put a game show on, or discuss where the hookers are and have live video feeds of where they can be "bought." That will get viewers!

Ethan is a fan of WLNE. This has been evident in posts from him during the old Radio-Info days. He was notorious for making ridiculous demands towards Channel 6...saying they need to do this, they need to do that...they need to get this news music package from this syndicator, the list goes on. The way he was talking, he thought money grew on trees, and the station has a never-ending supply of dollars. It was explained to him several times by me and others that stations have budgets they need to work with. Also, it was explained to him it will continue to be very difficult for Channel 6 to climb out of the ratings cellar. I do respect Ethan's evident dedication and loyalty to WLNE and the television news business...but he will never understand how things really operate until he goes to college, gets a degree, then gets an internship at a TV station, followed by possible employment. We can keep saying the same things over and over until we are blue in the face, but it will never register with this kid. I work for a television station in this market. I have learned to accept that my station will always be one place behind Channel 10. Of couse, we do what we can to try to unseat WJAR from the Throne, but it's a tough battle. As far as today's (Wednesday) sentencing coverage, Channel 12 re-joined the CBS network soap opera during the Sentencing Hearing recesses...while Channels 6 and 10 featured a reporter from outside the court house, along with in-studio anchors and analysts...re-capping the events from inside the courtroom. I don't know what channel Ethan was watching, but I was outside the court house (since I was part of the crew that was providing coverage for Channel 12) from about 12:30 P.M till way after 6:00. During the afternoon, I watched Jim Hummel (Ch. 6) and Brian Crandall (Ch. 10) do "live shots" from outside the court house during the court recesses.

Okay, so I made a mistake. I tuned in around 2:45 to find only WJAR on, and then WPRI came in at 3:00. I made my post before I saw the ticker on WLNE say that the sentencing was on their RI News Channel and that they would join coverage once the actual sentence was handed down. I'll admit, I should have waited before posting. Actually, I was quite pleased with WLNE's coverage. Very compelling, with Wendy Cicchetti's interview with the victim's familes, a review of their fire coverage, and all the victims. I heard the emotion in April O'Dell's voice at times. Plus, I was glad that they went right until Dr. Phil. But I still have hopes for a 5PM newcast (maybe 4) and an overnight reporter.

The problem with early newscasts (particularly 4pm) is that many people are still at work. Yes, it was great when I was a college student. However, now that I work from 8am to 6pm (or later), I would love to see a 7pm newscast.
